Man dies in jump from world's tallest building

A man committed suicide Tuesday by jumping off the 147th floor of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The man landed on a deck on the 108th floor of the 160-story structure, according to news reports from Dubai.

Dubai police confirmed the suicide, according to a report posted by The Gulf Today.

The man was described as an Asian in his mid-30s.

"The deceased works at one of the companies located at Burj Khalifa itself. We also came to know that the man decided to commit suicide as his company refused to grant  leave," a police official told The Gulf Today.

The Burj Khalifa is 2,716.5 feet tall and is the tallest free-standing structure in the world. It officially opened in 2010.

    What a shame.
Of course it was only a matter of time before something like this would happen.
What I don't understand is this – do all the windows open on the Burj Khalifa? I would expect that such a tall building would have safety percautions that would prevent this sort of thing from happening.

In ehe USA liability lawyers would be sure they were sued and insurance companies would require that people be protected from their own stupidity. I can't decide if that is a vote for Dallas or Dubai!!

Dude, it would require human-cannonball to clear away from the TAPERED building to hit the ground. If the guy can jump from 147th and hit the ground then it means 2 things. 1) He had cyborg legs or 2) it was very very very VERY windy.

Am I the only one noticing the reason for his suicide: his company refusing to grant leave?

In the gulf countries, foreign workers are denied their basic rights in e feudal-like society were you must have a mandatory local "sponsor" who can keep your passport and is the only one who can give you the right to leave the country.

MODERN SLAVERY that's what it is.

People going on "shopping" vacations in that part of the world should be aware of the ugly face of all that display of wealth.

That's weird, my sister-in-law is working as an Accountant in Dubai and has possession of her passport, her employer doesn't keep it. They do sponsor her work visa and if they lay her off or fire her, she has to leave the country until another employer sponsors her.

Don't know where you got your "facts" there.

Now that I thought about it, I'm sure there are cases like you state. Not everyone goes through it, but I imagine it does happen..

My apologies, I can admit being wrong.

A lot of the construction workers are brought in from South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka etc) and when they enter the country, their passports are kept by the construction company. The company basically holds their lives hostage until they are willing to let them go. During the economic downturn that hit Dubai especially badly, several construction companies did not pay their workers any salaries for several months. Since these construction companies are essentially owned by the royal family, it's not like they can call a lawyer and sue them for wages or anything. This is about as close to slavery as it gets today

It doesn't happen to Americans and Europeans but to impoverished workers from third world countries whose governments either don't care or don't have the power to advocate for them. In some cases, the workers don't hardly get paid either, and it winds up amounting to slavery as they can't leave the country and have no money to do so even if they had their passports.

Don't worry, Americans will understand it VERY well in a few years. The more power we give to US corporations through our refusal to tax them, regulate their behavior, or check their greed, the more they will take. In China you live in a dorm your company provides and basically live your life according to their schedule. For all the teabaggers whine about the federal government, this is the TRUE threat to our freedom. Corporate business, not government, is what we should be fearing.

Wow, that dude seriously wanted a vacation. I mean, there are lots of reasons to kill yourself – mental illness, incurable disease, etc. – but no leave? Seems a little extreme, eh.

P.S. It's really sad to see some of the jokes in the comments here. A man committed suicide because he was trapped in a slave like job, and us well-educated Americans can easily sit behind our internet username and poke fun at his plight.
