Man dies in jump from world's tallest building

A man committed suicide Tuesday by jumping off the 147th floor of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The man landed on a deck on the 108th floor of the 160-story structure, according to news reports from Dubai.

Dubai police confirmed the suicide, according to a report posted by The Gulf Today.

The man was described as an Asian in his mid-30s.

"The deceased works at one of the companies located at Burj Khalifa itself. We also came to know that the man decided to commit suicide as his company refused to grant  leave," a police official told The Gulf Today.

The Burj Khalifa is 2,716.5 feet tall and is the tallest free-standing structure in the world. It officially opened in 2010.

This highlights the plight of millions of underpaid, overworked and abused Asian workers not just in Dubai, but all over the Gulf. They live in squalid conditions and must wait years to see their families, including new borns.
They are liittle more than slaves.

May the gentleman rest in peace and may his family find comfort somewhere.

Its been said that when you commit suicide by jumping off a building, on the way down you suddenly achieve complete clarity of mind, and realize that you want to live. Of course its too late at that point.

@James There was a girl about 20 years ago who jumped twice off the Golden Gate and succeeded on the 2nd attempt. Clearly she didn't have that moment clarity.

I'm sorry, but... If you're gonna try something as impressive as jumping to your death from the tallest thing constructed since the Dawn of Man, you have to AT LEAST make it all the way down!

(That's first time I've that building. Pretty awesome...)

I don't believe many here understood the story, the reality is that a person took this act of desperation because he's under contract as a cheap labor- thanks to Dubai's development. Hmmm, can you say Foxxcon?

i guess a 39 story building would have sufficed.

The tragedy of only making it 29 stories before dying is made better by CNN's coverage of your suicide.

It's about time people understand how these Arabian peninsula countries exploit foreign workers like this person who killed himself because his employer wouldn't grant him leave. In other words, he tried to get some freedom from modern day slavery.
