Man dies in jump from world's tallest building

A man committed suicide Tuesday by jumping off the 147th floor of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The man landed on a deck on the 108th floor of the 160-story structure, according to news reports from Dubai.

Dubai police confirmed the suicide, according to a report posted by The Gulf Today.

The man was described as an Asian in his mid-30s.

"The deceased works at one of the companies located at Burj Khalifa itself. We also came to know that the man decided to commit suicide as his company refused to grant  leave," a police official told The Gulf Today.

The Burj Khalifa is 2,716.5 feet tall and is the tallest free-standing structure in the world. It officially opened in 2010.

Delmar, if you could learn, you should try to learn about the world. Much of the GCC nations still have indentured servitude, the very thing that we forced many Africans into slavery with at first, then accepted slaves captured by other Africans later. We took passports, levied heavy and impossible to pay fees, charged for room and board with no alternative permitted, charged for clothing, charged for medical, charged for everything and invented fees, until the poor SOB could NEVER get free and their family suffered corruption of blood and inherited the debt, incurring their own along the way.
I didn't witness the latter, but I DID personally witness the former. Only ONE GCC state seems bent on reform, Qatar. The rest like their slaves.

If they don't show up for work, they will be fired and repatriated back to their is a social malady as these workers are separated from their families who are still back home.......They have no recourse, no advocates for their cause......if you only knew....

If this man was an immigrant worker, his employers would have kept his visa. That's the standard practice in that part of the world. Without his visa and proper paperwork, he wouldn't last very long. Who knows what his reason for requesting leave was, could have been a family emergency back home. These immigrants are forced to live in slum like conditions, get paid like chumps and don't ever get a break. That's gotta hurt physiologically.

Paul, that's the standard practice in the US too. You get a visa to work at a specific company. So if you're a worker from the UK who is employed at a place like IBM or Intel, you're supposed to leave when you leave your job, regardless of the situation.

Doug, you really don't get what Paul is saying. You cannot appreciate how non-Arabs and non-Westerners are treated in the Gulf States. It's not like you have the OPTION to leave. Your employer simply keeps your passport and you cannot leave no matter how much you want to. In many Gulf states you cannot leave unless you have a letter from your employer giving you permission to travel abroad. It is modern-day slavery. YOU just don't get it.

Most day labourers in Dubai/Emirates are from Indian, Sri Lankan and Pakistani descent. Their employers hold their passports when they are given employment, so travelling at will isn't a feasible option. At this stage, I can only imagine if they receive some bad news from their family and they need to travel immediately, they are left with no option to travel. If you think complaining to the police or their bosses will take care of the issue, that's not going to work either. The situation is indeed bad.

Not true. There is no vacuum in the air around a building. It is the same air at the same air pressure. Lungs do not get "sucked out" on the way down. People are totally concious and screaming all the way to splat.

As to the logic that air is sucked out of your lungs on a fall from a high building... wouldn't that make skydiving impossible?

      May 17, 2011 at 12:07 pm | Report abuse |
    • Raven

Sky divers usually are instructed on how to fall with a good landing. It possible to die before you hit the ground. Even a sky diver could die before they hit the ground. But like I said there are instructions given to them that allow them to fall more carefully. Sky divers right after landing have to go to the hospital because of the ear bleeding and impact of wind. I have a friend that went sky diving. Two years later she has heart problems. Sky diving is still taking a major risk with your life, and that is before you reach the ground. The air can also suffocate you before falling, especially from as high as a building like this. That's why it is required for sky divers to have appropriate gear. The person usually stops screaming after 15 seconds of falling, depending how high the wind and building.

This is science people...not that science is always correct or relevant. But this is a tidbit of Physics Remediation.
Aside from Sky Diving, this article is really a tragedy. I pray for the loved ones. 🙁

Besides, don't you know? The velocity/pressure of the air in freefall is so intense, it forces oxygen molecules through your skin directly into your bloodstream, so you don't even have to breath at all!

Terminal velocity is approximately 120 MPH, so wouldn't a person on a motorcycle or open car going over 100 MPH also have their breath sucked out?

Speed increases 32 feet per second per second until terminal velocity is reached. That is where air friction prevents further speed increases. Change the position to vertical or from prone or bring in arms and lets and you go faster. It's better to slow before opening the parachute. Remember two straps are in your crotch and stop your speed with compression. Why do nude women whistle when parachuting?

Terminal velocity for human beings varies from about 100 MPH (spread-eagled, controlled descent like you see skydivers) to about 200 MPH (diving head first). Wind resistance prevents you from going faster than that. Skydivers in either pose have no issues breathing normally – the "lungs sucked out" thing is a total myth, just like "if you hit the ground in your dream you will die in real life" – grow up people.

Yeah. All those skydivers falling from far greater heights than any building or bridge. All dead as a doornail on landing. The fall time from even the highest building wouldn't take long enough to kill you even if the obvious nonsense about sucking air were true. Admit it, you're trolling, right? Um.. ever hear about parachute jumpers? People regularly jump from large heights and sustain free fall for a long time without suffocating. There are people who die of cardiovascular events, but majority of jumpers die due to sudden stopping since the stress on tissue causes it to rupture/fail.

Wrong. I've jumped from 10,000 feet. Opened at 1000. I had LONG hit terminal velocity, never lost breath.
So, no, the wind won't suck the air from your lungs.
It's the sudden stop, had a failure to deploy a few times, had to cut free and deploy reserve. The landing was major suckage.

SOOOOOOOooooooo.....why don't skydivers die before they pull the cord, I'm PREETTTYY sure they are falling really fast before they deploy the chutes, gaining speed, much faster that from a bridge...but screw logic right

I have a big problem with people who don't believe in jesus. He is my Lord and saviour. Some day very soon my friend you will meet him face to face. Are you going to deny him then? No I don't think so.

now that I read this, the info you got is more myth than fact. The only way one could die from speed is if they are very old, sick, or going more than 7 g's, and it could be because they are so thrilled at the speed they forget to inhale. I love this kind of speed but I've only gone 9 g's so far, yet inclosed.

That effect is realized with the concept of "inertial dampening". This is one of the 4 basic requirements for successful Warp Drive in Star Trek. It was also used in the Lensman series by E.E. Doc Smith where the inertial momentum was delayed until later when it was released at a more convenient time, I think. Correct me if I'm fantasizing.
