Ex-teammate: I saw Lance Armstrong inject banned substances

A former cycling teammate said seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs before several events, including the Tour de France, according to an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes."

In the interview, part of which CBS aired Thursday on the "CBS Evening News," Tyler Hamilton admitted that he, Armstrong and members of the U.S. Postal Service team often used banned substances. Hamilton has served a two-year suspension for doping.

Armstrong rebutted the allegation Thursday night on Twitter saying: "20+ year career. 500 drug controls worldwide, in and out of competition. Never a failed test. I rest my case."

Hamilton, who won an Olympic gold medal in 2004, told "60 Minutes" that he knows Armstrong used EPO, which helps boost endurance, several times, including in his win for the 1999 Tour de France.

"I saw (EPO) in his refrigerator. ... I saw him inject it more than one time like we all did, like I did many, many times," Hamilton said.

MayoClinic.com: Performance-enhancing drug risks

Armstrong on Thursday night tweeted for his followers to go to Facts4Lance.com, a site dismissing several doping allegations lodged against Armstrong over the years. Armstrong has always said he never took banned substances. He has never failed a drug test but repeatedly has been accused of using performance-enhancing drugs by other riders.

"Tyler Hamilton is a confessed liar in search of a book deal - and he managed to dupe 60 Minutes, the 'CBS Evening News,' and new anchor Scott Pelley," Armstrong lawyer Mark Fabiani said in a statement. "Most people, though, will see this for exactly what it is:  More washed-up cyclists talking trash for cash."

Hamilton, who had previously denied using the substances, said that he and riders took the drugs because they felt they needed to gain an edge.

"(Armstrong) took what we all took ... ," Hamilton told CBS.  "There was EPO ... testosterone ... a blood transfusion."

Of course he was on performance enhancing drugs. Most elite athletes are. They deny it until they get caught, admit it, then move on.

ok dwight guy.... in a sport where nobody has been immune to getting caught (they've nailed some BIG names in cycling) is his 1 positive test result? there hasn't been ONE in all the years he's competed professionally and internationally. so you mean to say he has somehow avoided detection while being stuck more times than a pin cushion, while the other big names are being nailed? or perhaps, the more obvious conclusion is that he is clean, and just happens to be a freak of nature. until somebody somewhere provides a positive test results, i think he's earned that.

He's guilty; where there's smoke there's fire.......everybody was giving Jose Cansenco a hard time when he told the TRUTH about Big Mac. During the congressional hearings the only one that was telling the truth was the TROLL himself Jose Cansenco. Jose never lied about his use yet everyone gives him the shaft. Lance is guilty like the rest of them; too many sponsors were making money off of the All American story Lance Armstrong that dumped his wife for Sheryl Crow.....yeah Lance is such a sweet guy. The sponsors made sure he was tipped off to the drug testing. Lance is a manufactured hero......

They are tested for a reason. I'm not naive enough to believe that the tests catch everyone, but people do get caught. If/when one of Armstrong's tests comes out dirty, then he should be the target of our criticism. For now, let it be and stop trying to drag his name through the mud.

Lance Armstrong was the most highly tested athlete in the world, and he never failed a drug test. Tyler Hamilton is a proven liar. Even if Lance had access to designer steroids that weren't detectable, Tyler is claiming that Lance took testosterone and had blood transfusions, both things they are able to test for 100%. And Lance never tested positive.

Then why is the guy who supplied P.E.D.'s and masking agents to Lance Armstrong, in solitary confinement in a Texa*s prison, and has been for years. Why doesn't the state of Texa*s let this guy speak the truth to the press?

I don't think for a second that he was taking PE Drugs. After all those years, all those test and not one result that would even cause a question much less prove he used any PE Drugs. Case Rested...

If Lance is and always has been clean, as he says, then he needs to file a lawsuit against Hamilton now and prove his case. If he does, and wins, all this talk will stop.

sounds great in theory and all, but just how do you plan on proving a negative?

Listen, all this "he's never failed a test in 20 years/where's the proof" stuff is moot. Barry Bonds never failed a test either but come to find out there was some magic steroid that was undetectable. No one had proof that Ted Bundy was a serial killer until they had proof he was a serial killer. Just because it hasn't been discovered yet doesn't mean it won't be and is reason that we shoudln't think he did something wrong.

Is it so unreasonable to think Lance wasn't the exception to the "everyone's doing it" rule and that he possibly knew how to trick the test results? Could a blood tranfusion trick a drug test 20 years ago? Designer drugs designed specifically for the purpose of not being detected? We know those exist. Especially 20 years ago when it didn't have all this world wide attention or the technology we have today? I don't know if he took them or not and frankly, i don't care. He didn't take anything from me and my kids won't learn anything from a guy who won BICYCLE RACES 20 YEARS AGO. Who. Gives. A. Sh!t. If he cheated, he has to live with it. So what.

yeah, markus is right. why even bother with people like you. your mind is made up in the face of evidence to the contrary. why is it so hard to believe the man is simply a freak of nature? because it exposes your shortcomings so thoroughly? i think that is highly more likely.

oh, and by the way, they still have some samples, retested, and guess what.... still clean.

james and markus, do you guys follow cycling? nearly every tour winner since the 50's has been caught for something, including recent winner contador. doping is part of cycling culture. many of lance's former teammates have been busted. lance's personal doctor was busted. through the years, the dopers have always stayed one step ahead of the tests. they know how to game it (usually). he's still an amazing athelete one way or the other, but it's unlikely that he's clean.

You are all correct, he's never failed a test so it's impossible that he cheated. All that means is the test he took were negative whether that means he is a freak of nature (statistically, less likely but i can buy into that) or he cheated and he found a way to get around the test. Like i said, i don't care if he did or he didn't. My point is, I don't know any more than you know. We can sit here and argue like little girls and we can make it personal and say "why deal with people like you" (is that because I'm black?) or we can all just face the reality which is none of us know the truth no matter what evidence points to what.

What's you stake in all this? Why are you so passionate about saying why point of view is so useless? It's valid is it not?
