Ex-teammate: I saw Lance Armstrong inject banned substances

A former cycling teammate said seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs before several events, including the Tour de France, according to an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes."

In the interview, part of which CBS aired Thursday on the "CBS Evening News," Tyler Hamilton admitted that he, Armstrong and members of the U.S. Postal Service team often used banned substances. Hamilton has served a two-year suspension for doping.

Armstrong rebutted the allegation Thursday night on Twitter saying: "20+ year career. 500 drug controls worldwide, in and out of competition. Never a failed test. I rest my case."

Hamilton, who won an Olympic gold medal in 2004, told "60 Minutes" that he knows Armstrong used EPO, which helps boost endurance, several times, including in his win for the 1999 Tour de France.

"I saw (EPO) in his refrigerator. ... I saw him inject it more than one time like we all did, like I did many, many times," Hamilton said.

MayoClinic.com: Performance-enhancing drug risks

Armstrong on Thursday night tweeted for his followers to go to Facts4Lance.com, a site dismissing several doping allegations lodged against Armstrong over the years. Armstrong has always said he never took banned substances. He has never failed a drug test but repeatedly has been accused of using performance-enhancing drugs by other riders.

"Tyler Hamilton is a confessed liar in search of a book deal - and he managed to dupe 60 Minutes, the 'CBS Evening News,' and new anchor Scott Pelley," Armstrong lawyer Mark Fabiani said in a statement. "Most people, though, will see this for exactly what it is:  More washed-up cyclists talking trash for cash."

Hamilton, who had previously denied using the substances, said that he and riders took the drugs because they felt they needed to gain an edge.

"(Armstrong) took what we all took ... ," Hamilton told CBS.  "There was EPO ... testosterone ... a blood transfusion."

Do these stories always resurface a few weeks before the Tour de France? I begin to suspect it's become part of the official publicity machinery.

There's too much evidence that says he's a doper. Of course he will deny it, but IMO Armstrong is a liar.

The 500+ drug tests he took and never failed seem to be good evidence to support that he never took performance enhancers.

@nick A chemist just has to find an unknown cheat that works once, then you can test a thousand times without positive results. The number of tests is not relevant if the masking technique is successful, understand?

I'm a personal trainer and find it hard to believe any human body capable of that level of success that many years in a row. It is especially hard to believe considering we know that the other athletes were doping during the same races. For seven years in a row he was able to successfully defeat doped up racers and win every time! And people believe that?

He says he never failed a test? How about a polygraph?

If by "evidence" you mean the 2 people making accusations, then I think you need to research the meaning of "evidence". The only evidence that could be found would be a blood sample that contains illegal substances. Since Armstrong is the most tested athlete ever and they still have dozens of samples taken throughout his career and they continue to test them when they have new methods to test to find new substances, they never find them.. Why is that?

You can't really win anything these days without PEDs. Everybody is doping.

Much as I doubt Lance Armstrong's clean history, I have to say this: The two current accusers, Hamilton and Landis, are known liars. Repeatedly and for years, they lied. And lied and lied and lied. And Landis even stole over a million dollars from his [former] supporters through a website where he solicited money to pay for his defense. Money which he's never repaid. And Hamilton has a book coming out soon.

On the other side, there are two cyclists who rode with Lance, and who have never lied about anything, who are saying they never saw Lance use. Plus the fact that Lance had cancer, was on chemo, and yet never failed a doping test.

Finally, as to Hamilton's truth-telling abilities, judging from his rather flamboyant phony hairpiece on the 60 Minutes interview, the man obviously still has trouble dealing with the Truth.

Excellent points. I was one of the supporters who gave Landis money so he could prove his innocence...duh.

As for Hamilton, he kept his gold medal because, although he failed the dope test, the second sample was botched, rendering the first test invalid. Does he hand over the gold medal now, like Marion Jones and the others?

Now if they can get that swimmer dude that broke all the records to come out and admit. He is swimming faster than a freaking dolphin. That is not natural.

Looks like people are guilty and they have to prove innocences. Unlike Baseball where if they only test if they 'suspect' a player of using, these guys are tested consistently throughout the Tour de France especially when they win stage and not once has his test come back positive.

Like Lance said, He's taken hundreds of dope tests, never failed one. So these jealous rats are trying to attack his credibility? I'll go with Lance & the Federation that tests the athletes. they all take the same tests. If he was dirty, the tests would have shown it. More conspiracy nuts at work here. They probably believe the worlds going to end tomorrow too.

What, did Armstrong not invite him to a party or something? Did he steal his parking spot? My response is, yes it sucks if he was doping, but if you knew about it then and knew it was wrong, why tell us now?

The saddest part about all of this is that many honest people actually have been misled and lied to by Armstrong. He still continues to lie and I'm sure he doesn't even know who he is anymore or what he has become. He's been living a lie for over a decade. Surely, the guilt is eating away at him and contributed to the destruction of his first marriage. I almost feel sympathy for him. At some point he will crack and come forward.

Well, I don't know who is lying, but if you were Lance would you have used anything in front of another guy? If you were Lance, would you have had it in your fridge for anyone to pin on you? I don't think Lance is dumb...
