Ex-teammate: I saw Lance Armstrong inject banned substances

A former cycling teammate said seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs before several events, including the Tour de France, according to an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes."

In the interview, part of which CBS aired Thursday on the "CBS Evening News," Tyler Hamilton admitted that he, Armstrong and members of the U.S. Postal Service team often used banned substances. Hamilton has served a two-year suspension for doping.

Armstrong rebutted the allegation Thursday night on Twitter saying: "20+ year career. 500 drug controls worldwide, in and out of competition. Never a failed test. I rest my case."

Hamilton, who won an Olympic gold medal in 2004, told "60 Minutes" that he knows Armstrong used EPO, which helps boost endurance, several times, including in his win for the 1999 Tour de France.

"I saw (EPO) in his refrigerator. ... I saw him inject it more than one time like we all did, like I did many, many times," Hamilton said.

MayoClinic.com: Performance-enhancing drug risks

Armstrong on Thursday night tweeted for his followers to go to Facts4Lance.com, a site dismissing several doping allegations lodged against Armstrong over the years. Armstrong has always said he never took banned substances. He has never failed a drug test but repeatedly has been accused of using performance-enhancing drugs by other riders.

"Tyler Hamilton is a confessed liar in search of a book deal - and he managed to dupe 60 Minutes, the 'CBS Evening News,' and new anchor Scott Pelley," Armstrong lawyer Mark Fabiani said in a statement. "Most people, though, will see this for exactly what it is:  More washed-up cyclists talking trash for cash."

Hamilton, who had previously denied using the substances, said that he and riders took the drugs because they felt they needed to gain an edge.

"(Armstrong) took what we all took ... ," Hamilton told CBS.  "There was EPO ... testosterone ... a blood transfusion."

Just watching him make these accusations, I cannot believe a word he says. The way he can't keep still, fidgets, never looks the News Anchor in the eye, shakes his head NO while saying yes.

I've seen 5 year old kids able to lie better than this guy.

All that means is that Lance is the better liar, but anyone following pro cycling has known that for years anyway. Tyler Hamilton was a doper, a cheat, and a liar ... but so was Lance. He's under a grand jury investigation, and when it's finished you'll have a different view of him. The government is not just after him for doping ... Lance was part owner of the U.S. Postal cycling team while it was getting millions of sponsorship dollars from taxpayers, and some observers believe the government is going to go after him for criminal fraud. Look it up ...

Cancer survivors and their supporters wear yellow to celebrate life. Lance has inspired so many with his own example of triumph over adversity. Guess that's too much for you to understand. What have you done for man kind?

Christ inspires me, and He's the only one I look up to. Cancer kills, too, you know, despite any efforts to "triumph" over it. My wife died of brain cancer and my triumph is not in wearing a silly bracelet, but celebrating the knowledge that life is temporary and that through Christ we'll be together again.
You're all welcome to look up to some arrogant (and obviously doped up) sports athlete. I've chosen a better path.

This guy saying this now is as guilty as Lance( if he did do dope) What was his benefit for not blowing the whistle on Lance then? Any way you look at that sport , cycling, with all the latest we hear and see on TV there is no clean team. Too much on the body without any drug influence. I will take this with a pinch of salt.

Yup, EPO works really well. But I think they are now manufacturing the stuff with a detectable marker in it so all you athletes who have the desire to cheat, the gig is up.

They probably did this so they sell the stuff without the "marker" to them for 10x more.

...as if there wont be a source on the black market for epo that has no marker...

If someone kept accusing me of something I never did and attacked my character, i would sue them for defamation of character. All these people cant be lying. What benefit would it get them to slander the most famous and beloved cyclist ever. Lance cheated pure and simple you people who are in denial are just trying to protect a false image your hero created. Would love to see the look on your faces when he finally admits it in about 10 years. You guys will be the only ones shocked while us other will have already known 15 years ahead of you. Keep burying your heads in the sand and copping pleas for him until then.

I guess that's true. Why isn't Lance suing him for slander and defamation? This would seem like a no-brainer to me.

SEVERAL riders over the past few years have accused Lance of doping, and most claim to have proof. Lance has never sued any of them because he couldn't afford to have any of this go to trial where it would be possible to subpoena information. That's all a moot point now, though, because the U.S. government has decided to go after him ... there is an active grand jury investigation (Lance personally, not just doping in general) that started a few months ago.

He has sued many people and publications. It will never end because there are always people who "benefit" either financially or by making themselves known or made famous. Whether it's true or not , the sport of cycling is tainted and that is the saddest thing for me.

Instead of assuming drivel, do some research and get a clue. Start with the Velonews archives, and try to pay attention to the ongoing grand jury investigation into Lance.

Lance never failed because he's got the best chemists and docs on his payroll – and he was never tested for EPO because there wasn't a TEST FOR EPO when he was competing. Now EPO is supposedly manufactured with markers. Anyone who thinks Lance came back from cancer to win multiple Tour de France races by Secretariat margins and wasn't using something illegal – you are totally delusional in your hero worship.

Thank god someone with some sense (or who knows anything about pro cycling) finally posted here. Blood doping was also undetectable and Lance has long been suspected of doing that as well. It's not just that he came back from cancer to win, of course ... he had huge wins over folks who were also doping (caught and admitted). That just doesn't happen without doping ... the performance advantages to doping in an endurance sport are simply too great. All of this blind support for Lance reminds me of the "I Believe Tyler" campaign, and it's going to end the same way .. lots of disappointed and irate fans when the truth comes out. The only difference is that Lance has a fair chance of going to jail for fraud.
