Woman swept to death over Niagara Falls

A woman was killed when she was swept over Niagara Falls, according to news reports.

Witnesses said the woman appeared to be alive as she approached the brink of the Horseshoe Falls about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, reported CNN affiliate WIVB-TV in Buffalo, New York.

The Maid of the Mist, the vessel that takes tourists to the foot of the falls in the Niagara River, dispatched a boat to help her, but she was dead when it reached her, according to the WIVB report.

The woman has not been identified, and her death is under investigation by the Niagara Parks police and Niagara Regional Police, according to a report in the Niagara Gazette. Foul play was not suspected, WIVB reported.

On Monday, two men in a small boat came within 700 feet of the brink of the falls before they were pulled to safety, CNN affiliate WGRZ-TV in Buffalo reported. The motor failed on the men's boat, and the current carried them toward the falls before rescuers were able to hook the craft with a rescue line, according to the report.

I was on a Maid of the Mist boat that afternoon. We had to delay docking for a few minutes so a small boat could first bring the women to the side of our dock and out of our view. I overheard an employee on the boat tell another employee, "they're bringing in a package", and I was wondering what kind of package comes out of the falls. All of the Maid of the Mist, police and rescue personal seemed very routined as they waited for us tourist to clear out.

If she waited just a little longer, she might have fallen into the MAID OF THE MIST.

Just to let you know, Niagara falls isn't man made. I'm trying really hard not to be mean; but you ought to think about what you're saying before you say things.

      Dear Econut:
Here are the facts (humans have had a positive impact on Niagara Falls–increased safety)
No, but it has been modified by man. There is a dam that reduces the amount of water that goes over the falls and at night they cut the water to below 20%. The water is slowly cutting its way back from it's original place, but by controlling the water it won't move back quite as much. In the past, when the falls were full power, I think it would cut away a foot of earth a year or something. If they left it at full power it would be destructive to the infrastructure of homes, business etc of anything in its path.

Lol. . . Really? A man killer? The ones that die are the ones foolish enough to actually try and defeat it. The ones that are blind, and think that they are invincible. The ones that think their small boat or barrel can defeat the falls. These Falls are not man made either, but only modified so that it is not too destructive on the population built around it. If you are smart, and only OBSERVE the Falls, then you will be safe. But if you go to the top of them in your little raft, trying to prove your bravery, or whatever you call it, then you will die,

The response to this comment clearly shows how many people are being paid by the chinese government to troll american sites and post amazingly coherent but absolutely missing-the-point comments. Or maybe it is the aliens doing it.But I really don't want to believe that so many english speaking people cannot discern sarcasm from serious comment.
If that is the case then God help America!!!

Her name was Elizabeth. she was a wife a mom a sister and friend. Her husband died the week before. It is so sad to be so broken that you actually break. For those ignorant people out there who get off on fueling their egos by making fun of anothers pain....get over it. The world doesnt need your sick humor and neither do her family and friends.
She left the world with the intent....just to satisfy that curiosity. thanks to all of u who have offered words of comfort

That is a very scary way to die. She must have been in misery. Now her family will suffer all the more. We all feel horrid when someone jumps the falls. Nonetheless, there are many other non public ways to take one's life. I wonder why she commited this crime in front of countless families?

What the world needs less of is intolerance, such as your stance on what is and is not funny. Don't tell me what is and isn't funny. EVERYTHING is fair game. You're fooling yourself if you think differently. Just because YOU don't find something humorous doesn't mean that it isn't.

You should really resist the urge to read the comments or post your own, just grieve for your friend and stop providing fuel for people to use to make fun of your friend. Your comment is not going to keep anyone from posting derogatory comments or making fun of the incident so why bother getting involved in it?

If she was your friend, I am so sorry for your loss. I went to the falls for the first time just three weeks before this sad tragedy. The power of these falls is frightening and I felt uneasy standing with other tourists watching them. Elizabeth must have been in so much pain to end her life this way. I pray she is finally at peace.

This poor woman must have been so distraught if she ended up in the river on purpose. When you're that depressed, you really aren't thinking straight. You just go with the impulse. So very sad.

My love and prayers to her family and friends.

Pinball Wizard, you are correct, their is no man in the sky, but thier is a GOD.

You might want to study, DNA Sequences and explain the complexity of it without a GOD to Design it.

Let me understand this correctly. You believe that God exists/is real simply based upon the complexity of DNA, and therefore DNA by its very existance and complexity requires the existance of God since evolution could not have been responsible. Your ignorance is astounding, matched only by your arrogance.

Oh so all it took was you to confirm it, now everyone can rest easy! Haha so ignorant you are. I'll guarantee you it takes more faith to believe that there isn't a God that believe that there is. Unfortunately there are some of you that are too ignorant to even attempt to believe that there in fact may be a God. Believe and you will live!
