Alleged Libyan rape victim leaves Libya for Malta, source says

Eman al-Obeidy has left Libya and is on the way to Malta with her father, according to a high-level U.S. State Department source. She will eventually head to a processing center in Europe before leaving for a final destination. Al-Obeidy grabbed the world's attention this spring when she accused Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's security forces of gang-raping her. She has told CNN on repeated occasions that she wants to go to United States. Read more about this story as it develops.

Watch CNN's Nic Robertson report on the latest about al-Obeidy. Watch details of why Qatar, where al-Obeidy had been staying, deported her back to Libya last week. The United States said it was "disappointed" with Qatar's move.

Libyan rebels are arbitrarily detaining dozens of civilians suspected of being loyal to Gadhafi and are holding them without trial or due process, Human Rights Watch charged Sunday. At least one person is thought to have died in custody, with his body showing signs of torture, the group said in a report based on visits to rebel-held parts of Libya. It is difficult to tell exactly how many civilians are being held without charge because some are held by militias and because the rebels do not clearly distinguish between civilian detainees and captured pro-Gadhafi fighters, Human Rights Watch said.

The rebel Transitional National Council, based in Benghazi in eastern Libya, is seeking international support including money in its battle to oust Gadhafi. A NATO-led mission that has focused airstrikes on Gadhafi's military capability bolsters the rebel efforts.

For more on al-Obeidy, read story about a CNN videographer who witnessed al-Obeidy's desperate cries when she rushed into the Tripoli hotel in late March.

How absolutely ignorant some of you are. First, you say that you can tell by "her face" that she is telling a tall tale and then you would like to see a video of her being abused to see if she is telling the truth. How should a victim of physical violence look, you ignoramous?? Second, do you get off by seeing acts of violence on tape?? Maybe we should see if we could put you away somewhere.. Ridiculous. Who the hell makes us judge and jury when these type of events happen? Have we not seen what happens to women in the middle east and how often they are abused without anyone ever helping? I am afraid to know if a daughter or mother close to you would suffer in such a way that would you ask to see a video tape to ensure they are telling the truth.. Ridiculous.

You know just thinking about it the video tape would only show how UGLY these men really are. Anyone who abuses another in this way is completely VOID of good.

There has been such a lack of empathy on this story, it does my heart good to know I am not the only one dismayed over it. The story breaks my heart, the comments steal my hope.

People who believe this story is true are just as bad as the ones saying it is a tall tale. No one knows s#^t, so why bother getting so emotionally attached to one end or the other...get a life...

  2. Anthony's Case Posts

OK, so if the child innocently drowned herself in the pool then why did Casey Anthony lie about it to the investigators when she was CLEARLY marked as a prime suspect? Why not just call an ambulance?
THEN she got caught in the lie because the person she said was baby sitting her daughter( probably got the name in a phone book) never met her in her life. She got caught in the lie when she led the investigators to an apartment that WASN’T EVEN VACANT.No Where near where this babysitter really lived.
After she got caught she sat in jail and came up with this even better story that is harder to be diss-proven.How did the duct tape get on her daughter again? How did the duct tape get on her daughters mouth again?
OK OK so lets just ASSUME the little girl drowned in the pool………….Why would she cover up for her father after the defense clearly said her father said to her “I’m gonna make sure you go to prison for the rest of your life for this”Then she left and went partying

Casey Anthony is just NUTS and a pathological lair. She was living a lie for years even before this whole thing happened. The “babysitter” was a 2 yr lie that she fed to her dad and tried to feed to the investigators that ended up at an empty apartment. She should be tried for lying to the police on 2 accounts on top of everything..

After that, she'll be whisked to FOX/TV for her make-over, Weight Watchers meeting and a whirlwind romance with a sports-star. Then her own reality show and line of baby clothes. What a country!

The rebels are holding civilians without good reason, torturing, and perhaps killing them – but we're helping them and want them to take power after Gadhafi is ousted?

When this woman first approached the foreign media, it was reported that she showed many signs of the brutality that was forced on her. That and the reaction from the Libyan officials that day should be enough for even the most ignorant morons posting here.
I for one believe her and I hope she makes it to America. She would make a much better citizen than you hate spewers who have no life.

Its good that you have all the evidence so you can make an informed decision on whether she is telling the truth or not. God for you that you can be her judge.

I know right!! We complain about our government but at the end of the day, as a woman at least, there are very few safe places for us to live. America is one of the safe places.

As crowded and overwhelmed as America is with immigrants that just don't 'get it', I would hope we could find room for Miss Al-Obeidy. No one should have to suffer what she's gone through just to get simple Justice. She's put a human face on this kind of injustice.

I hope this lady finds the peace and well-being she deserves, no matter what country she decides to seek asylum in.

Of course some of you would rather see her looking like sh!t warmed over, apparently with stuff dripping down her legs for authenticity.
But then, you people are no better that those who did this to her in the first place!

    Shame on you!!!!!
