Syria: 'Armed gangs' kill 80 security forces

Dozens of people were killed Monday in the northern Syrian city of Jisr Al-Shugur in the third consecutive day of violence there, according to reports from the government and opposition groups.

State-run Syrian television reported that 40 members of Syria's security forces were killed in an ambush by "armed gangs" in the city and that some of the bodies were mutilated and thrown along the banks of the Assi River, three were killed when government buildings were set afire and another 37 were killed in clashes at a security center.

State television further reported that the "armed gangs" had stolen five tons of dynamite from a storage area near the Al Abyad Valley Dam. The state security forces were facing hundreds of armed men in Jisr Al-Shugur and were trying to lift the siege of a neighborhood that had been taken over by the "gangs," state TV reported.

It said the state was sending reinforcements.

A resident of Jisr al-Shugur, however, said the city was calm Monday, and that the clashes happened at nearby Khan Shaykhun, where 20 residents and an unknown number of security forces were killed.

He said residents were using hunting rifles.

The Syrian Revolution Facebook page said 10 helicopters were firing at civilians. The page predicted a major military incursion Monday night and appealed to residents to evacuate as soon as possible to Turkey.

An opposition member who lives outside Syria but has sources inside the country who have proved reliable in the past said the clashes over the past three days in Jisr Al-Shugur, Khan Shaykhun and surrounding villages were between members and supporters of the Islamist group the Muslim Brotherhood and the Syrian security forces.  He said that 90 security members and 23 opposition members were killed Monday. In addition, nine tanks were destroyed and two helicopters were downed, he said.

  4. Anthony's Case Posts

The fact that the remains were skeletal also prevented authorities from getting definitive answers on toxicology, as well as evidence that Caylee was abused - something her mother is charged with doing. "How do you prove that when you just have skeletal remains?" Casarez said.

Duct tape was still stuck to the lower facial region of the child's body, authorities have said.

"(Caylee's) killer prepared some substance in advance that would render her physically unable to resist," prosecutor Jeff Ashton said at a December 2009 hearing, "administered the substance, awaited its effect and then methodically applied three pieces of duct tape to completely cut off the flow of air through her mouth or her nose and let nature take its course."

Authorities have said that the amount of decomposition would seem to indicate Caylee died shortly after she went missing.

Anthony initially told police that she had last seen her daughter in the custody of a babysitter named Zenaida Gonzalez. Investigators never tracked down the babysitter; later, a woman named Zenaida Gonzalez filed a defamation suit against Anthony, saying she had never met her and lost her job over the claims. Anthony countersued, accusing Gonzalez of attempting to cash in on the high-profile case.

Prosecutors allege that after killing her daughter, Anthony stashed her body in the trunk of her Pontiac Sunfire before disposing of it. A cadaver dog has alerted to the scent of human decomposition in the trunk, and testing showed the presence of chloroform. Orange County Superior Court Chief Judge Belvin Perry Jr. ruled last month jurors can hear the chloroform testimony. In addition, investigators have said they found Internet searches of websites mentioning chloroform on Anthony's computer.

Anthony's high-powered defense team, fighting to save her life, will likely try to cast doubt on prosecutors' scientific evidence. At pretrial hearings, they have argued that evidence regarding a potential odor of decomposition in the trunk, chloroform and other evidence is not reliable enough for jurors to consider.

Perry has also ruled jurors can hear testimony about a stain in the trunk, as well as the decompositional odor. In March, Baez contended that having jurors look at the stain might have a "prejudicial effect," alleging it could have been caused by a wet bag of garbage or gasoline cans. The stain was negative for DNA, as well as for the presence of blood or other bodily fluids, he said. "There is absolutely no proof whatsoever that this is a biological stain," Baez said.

Perhaps the biggest hurdle for the defense is the fact that Caylee had been missing for 31 days before authorities were aware of it, and her mother failed to report it, Casarez said.

In addition, some have alleged that Anthony didn't behave like the worried mother of a missing child during the search for Caylee. She went to nightclubs and sent hundreds of text messages to friends, according to cell phone and text transcripts and investigative reports released by police. Those records show she rarely mentioned her missing daughter.//

These killing would be orchestrated by the government secret service to try and sell its brutal crackdown against demonstrators. The Baath party had a tight grip on security in Syria, no one could have had a gun without them knowing about it. When people started demanding freedom, All of a sudden and out of nowhere there are now violent armed gangs in the hundreds and clashes at the Israeli borders which was the quietest Israeli border for almost 40 years. People has got to understand that the Asaad family and their associate would stop at nothing and would do the un-imaginable to stay in power. I am talking from a point of long experience within Syria. A monster that would mutilate the living body of a 13 year old just to scare the hell off the rest of the population would not spare the lives of some 80 soldiers just to make them look like the victim.

The Syrian Gov needs to realize that they cannot hide behind force and oppression forever. And that abuses to the rights of their people will be answered. They simply delay the inevitable.

Interesting that they're even bothering to discuss or report what's going on. So now it's "armed gangs," huh? Allied with who?

The "armed gangs" are civilians who the Syrian army massacred using a helicopter gunship over the weekend. Now they're getting revenge.

This could easily be a government lie designed to discredit the opposition. Show me the official military I. D.'s of the alleged dead soldiers and match the I. D.'s to the bodies. Absent that kind of proof, we could just as easily be looking at opposition members who were captured, dressed in Syrian military uniforms and slaughtered by the real Syrian soldiers. I don't think anybody should believe anything the butcher Assad says. This sort of subterfuge has Iranian stink all over it. Aside from that, where's NATO to protect Syrian civilians in the same way they have promised to protect Libyan citizens? The answer is simple; NATO will not mess with any country that can actually defend itself! And they know that Iran would jump into the fray and the result would more than likely be another war that the NATO powers can't afford to fight, pitting Christian armies against Muslims/Muslim governments/radical Islamists that would inevitably draw Israel into the conflict. Once that happened, you'd have World War III on the doorstep. What a mess.

They could put any kind of spin on any kind of story they want to further their agenda.

Well with weak Obama why wouldn't Assad go crazy on his people like his father?

I am really getting sick and tired of how weak we look to the people in communist and dictator controlled contries. Instead of going full throttle we bit pick!! Costing us even more $$$ and time!! With our technology Libya should have been liberated in a few weeks. This is our chance to show the Muslim people we have there backs.. And Obama shows weakness just like in helping the economy which he has further destroyed with a stimulus that had zero sustainable jobs and spent more money than the horrid bush era did in 8 years and 2 wars.. Obama is a joke!!! How he slapped Israel the day before Netanyahu comes to the US shows ZERO class!!! Israel has no land to begin with!! Obama and our government needs to wake up instead of just making there buddies happy to help their pockets and their campaigns!!!
