[Updated at 5:30 p.m. ET]Â U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner said Monday he has sent inappropriate photos to and had inappropriate communications with about six women over the past three years - some after he was married - and says he's "very sorry."
The photos include one - sent on his Twitter account more than a week ago - that he had previously claimed was a result of a hacker's prank, the New York Democrat told reporters Monday afternoon at a New York City hotel.
He said he's made "terrible mistakes and ... hurt the people that I care about the most," but he won't step down from Congress and has no intentions of  separating from his wife.
"I'm deeply regretting what I’ve done, and I’m not resigning," he said.
The women are "generally women that I met on Facebook," Weiner said. He said he never met the women in person, and has never had sex outside his marriage.
Of the photo that got the media's attention late last month - a picture of a man in underwear that was sent on Weiner's Twitter account - he said that he mistakenly tweeted it publicly. "I intended to send (the photo) as a direct message to a woman as part of a joke to a woman in Seattle," he said.
When reporters asked him about it at the time, he said that he was the victim of a hacker and a prank.
"Once I realized I had posted to Twitter, I panicked, I took it down and said that I’d been hacked," Weiner said Monday. "I then continued with that story - to stick to that story - which was a hugely regrettable mistake. This woman was unwittingly dragged into this and bears no responsibility. I'm so sorry to have disrupted her life in this way."
"To be clear, the picture was of me, and I sent it."
He added that he's "deeply sorry for the pain this has caused" to his wife, friends and constituents.
Weiner said whether he would run for re-election is "the last thing on my mind."

Earlier in the day, Weiner faced new questions after BigGovernment.com, a site run by conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart, posted a picture of a bare-chested man that it says a woman claims came from Weiner.
[Posted at 4:16 p.m. ET] U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-New York, is scheduled to address members of the news media late Monday afternoon in a New York City hotel, according to his office.
CNN will have live coverage of the address.
News of Weiner's planned address comes amid more than a week of controversy over photos that are alleged to have come from him or his Twitter account, including one released Monday by BigGovernment.com, a site run by conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart. The site has posted a picture of a bare-chested man that it says a woman claims came from Weiner.
CNN has been unable to independently confirm that the image is that of the congressman or was sent by him.
As reporters waited for Weiner to make his address Monday afternoon, Breitbart appeared at the hotel, and - apparently at the urging of reporters - took to a podium and spoke to the media, CNN's Mary Snow reported.
The latest photo emerged more than a week after a different photograph - one of a man in underwear - was sent on Weiner's Twitter account. Weiner has said that he didn't send that photo, and that he was the victim of a hacker and a prank.
He looks good in the chest shot. Ripped, good shoulder set. Good job with the razor–maybe Nair or wax. (Ouch.)
His arms are probably better than they look at that angle. Injecting the biceps locally with juice would bring them up in proportion to the pecs.
Good show.
His brain has already been injected with dawgsheet so why not the arms too?
Career over.
C'mon people! Out of all of the people on Capitol Hill, do you think he is the only one who has done this? I think his only real mistake is that he hasn't learned what I did. When you mess up, you walk up to the boss, look him in the eye and say, "I did it". What's he going to do, give you twenty lashes?
Thing is, he lied and said he was "set up." The lying made it 100 times worse than just this stupid photo.
Its the lie that will condemn him, like it did to Clinton. But, as with Clinton, it does not mean the end of his political career. He just never can engage in a morality argument with another politician again. Of course, the opposition will have a field day with it either way.
This is politics afterall. The wheels are already in motion. Natural consequences will take hold for this man who made a very bad career choice to dwell in his man cave office while his wife cooked, cleaned and tended to the children at home. 18 months from now he'll probably be a lobbiest somewhere.
We all knew it all along. He lied about this, what else has he lied about? And he's still in office! How's that marriage going by the way?
you right maybe he lied about wmd in iraq and started a war killing 1000s of US soldiers oh no what that was bush why is it that you can lie about something to start a war and thats ok but if you lie but a pic of your dick or getting a bj people want to hang you out to dry
CNN has cropped the original photo. On other sites, it is very very apparent it is Weiner, plus the photos in the background are clearly of him (one to the viewers left looks like him and his wife).
I don't care. I still love him!
Sick. Someone stop this circus. At the very least he should refrain from saying anything about how his wide feels! He's not a weiner – he's a DICK!
What a weiner!!!!
Republicans at least have some shred of decency to resign and go hide somewhere in shame, never to be seen again. Democrats cling to their power at all costs, no matter what wrongs they do, and even try to redefine what wrong "is" in order to protect themselves. What a shameful display. Tweeting lewd photos while married, lying about hacking, yelling at people who refused to believe his lies, maybe even lying to the FBI as they started to investigate a possible hack of a sitting government official. And he STILL thinks he has the right to be a U.S. House Representative.
you mean like having affairs with the cleaning staff? Oh no, that is no where close to being a democrat-only trait.
Thank goodness our government is in the hands of responsible adults with impecable character and judgement. Ill rest easier, thanks Weiner. Now go stand in the corner.
I think its funny when this was first reported a lot of liberals thought it was just some scam brought on by
'crazy conservatives' and Rep Weiner was a good guy who just found himself in the crossfires. Im not a conservative or a liberal but maybe this will be a wake up call to all the extremist that both parties have ridiculous people in them and maybe its time to act like adults.
Cb. you rock!!
Okay. If he sent these photos to a woman how did the photos get posted to the public off his account? Sounds like someone would not pay up.
Sometimes I truly wonder who's running our country. Lately it seems like a bunch of hormonal teenagers learning the hard way about social media. Good Lord man! Concentrate on the relevant issues at hand instead of exposing your personal desires.
You voted for them!!!
