2 people die as bear flies through SUV

A bizarre auto accident involving two vehicles and a bear has left two people and the bear dead, Canadian authorities said.

Police in Quebec said a 300-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire. The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, regional police spokesman Officer Martin Fournel said.

"It was a 300-pound bullet," he said.

The SUV's 35-year-old female driver and a 40-year-old man sitting behind her were killed; a 28-year-old front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Fournel said. In the Pontiac, neither the driver, a 23-year-old man, nor his 19-year-old male passenger was hurt.

No alcohol or drugs were involved, and police are still trying to determine each vehicle's speed in the 90 kph (56 mph) zone, Fournel said, adding that charges are unlikely.

"It's a first, there's no doubt about that," he said. "We had similar accident several years ago with a deer going through the windshield and ending up in the back seat, where it injured a boy. He wasn't killed, he was hurt. But it was not like this."

It's bear mating season, and many male bears are out looking - sometimes recklessly - for females, so drivers on rural roads should be watchful, hunting guide Daniel Larocque told the Canadian television network CBC.

The accident occurred near the town of Luskville, about 25 miles northwest of Ottawa, Ontario.

It must have been difficult for you to read the first sentence. So many big words! No wonder you didn't know the bear was dead. I am sure a Canadian could read one sentence and not get confused.

The bear was struck by one car, flew through the air and struck an SUV, went through the vehicle killing tow occupants and out the back end. OF COURSE THE BEAR DIED!!!!! I was being sarcastic, Frank, you dumb bonehead!

People get a life. It happened, you have had your fun at the expense of others, move on. It was an interesting, but very tragic event, but not the earth shattering news you are all making it out to be. Move along people.

The 28 year old SUV passenger will have quite a story to recount, wow.

Yes, Sheila. I'm sure he's looking forward to telling people for years how his mom and dad were killed right before his eyes.

dwight guy: his mother and father? so his mother had him when she was 7? granted, i'm sure he's not going to be recapping the deaths of his friends at the bar every night, (although who knows) but i highly doubt a 35 year old and a 40 year old are the parents of a 28 year old...

So Dwight, given the ages reported in the story and your synopsis, the boy's mother was 7 and his fatther was 12 when he was born? Think much?

Dwight Guy doesn't read very carefully. At most they were siblings, and at least they were friends. It would be a whole other news story if a 7-year old and 12-year old had a kid. As for Sheila, I think she meant that the 23-year old driver of the second car will have quite a story to recount.

Maybe Dwight Guy should check his math before making snarky comments. The female driver was only 7 years older and the male passenger was 12 years older than the passenger in the SUV if in fact the ages were 28, 35, and 40. Regardless, it was no doubt a horrifying experience that he/she won't want to talk about often.

Dwight, I don't think a 35 year old woman and a 40 year old man could be parents to a 28 year old. Either your reading comprehension skills are seriously impaired, or you math skills. Or perhaps you didn't bother to read the article in the first place? Ignorance either way. Go back to sleep.

Obviously Dwight didn't read it. You did notice that the driver & back seat passenger were only 35 & 40? If those are his parents than they started REALLY early!

So does Dwight Guy's comment make him lousy at reading or math – or both? Yeah, I will say he never excelled at either of them.

I also would like to point out that Sheila didn't say either way whether it was going to be a happy story or a horror story, just that he would have quite a story to tell about the fact that they were driving along and then BOOM in (and out) goes a bear!

FFS Dwight, think before you post

  8. Buy an SUV cause an accident!

"...vehicle's speed in the 90 kph (56 mph) zone..." While the loss of human life as well as that of the Bear is tragic, it still does not allow SUV owners to abscond from driving recklessly. When will the legal system finally catch up, to the dangerous behavior of most SUV drivers. and get them off the road!

    June 8, 2011 at 12:49 pm | Report abuse |
    • Johan

did you read the entire article? having an SUV has NOTHING to do with the accident! A pontiac sunfire in 1 lane hit the bear and it flew up and hit the SUV travelling in the other direction. Speed may end up being a factor for both vehicles, but I don't know how much difference that would make with a 300+ lb bear flying through the air. The only good thing is that it was at night and i'm sure that driver and the passenger behind her had not idea what happened. shame on you.

I rarely ever comment, but did you miss the part where the Pontiac Sunfire was the one that hit the bear, NOT the SUV driver? Or what about the part where they don't think anyone was driving recklessly. If you hit a bear at 60 mph, then it's going to go flying... in to an innocent SUV in this case.

Since when is " the behavior of most SUV drivers" reckless? Says who, you? I've been driving various SUV's for 20 years, and I've never had nor caused an accident, nor has my husband, brother, sister in law, father, mother, etc. etc. etc. And by the way, that's not an appropriate use of the word "abscond". Hush – clearly your comment is nonsensical.

    • Shelleyt

WTH are you talking about???? There is NO indication that there was any reckless driving going on, or that the SUV caused this in any way! Seriously? Obviously you do not live anywhere near wildlife, as the wildlife official stated, it's mating season and the bears are acting more recklessly. Not the drivers! And the car that actually hit the bear first was a small car, the bear flew through the other vehicle. The whole thing is tragic and those of us who live in areas where wildlife abound are well aware of the possibilities of hitting a moose, bear, deer, elk – all of which can be fatal to both the animal and humans.

Please work on your reading comprehension skills before shooting your mouth off. This was a freak accident, no one was driving recklessly. And no, I don't own an SUV, you arrogant tool.

What's wrong with you people that you take the time to write jokes? Two people died. May they and the bear rest in peace. I hope the rest of you get enough perspective and healing to return to humanity where we care about people, mourn death, and at a minimum offer respect to their loved ones by not being jerks. How sad.
