2 people die as bear flies through SUV

A bizarre auto accident involving two vehicles and a bear has left two people and the bear dead, Canadian authorities said.

Police in Quebec said a 300-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire. The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, regional police spokesman Officer Martin Fournel said.

"It was a 300-pound bullet," he said.

The SUV's 35-year-old female driver and a 40-year-old man sitting behind her were killed; a 28-year-old front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Fournel said. In the Pontiac, neither the driver, a 23-year-old man, nor his 19-year-old male passenger was hurt.

No alcohol or drugs were involved, and police are still trying to determine each vehicle's speed in the 90 kph (56 mph) zone, Fournel said, adding that charges are unlikely.

"It's a first, there's no doubt about that," he said. "We had similar accident several years ago with a deer going through the windshield and ending up in the back seat, where it injured a boy. He wasn't killed, he was hurt. But it was not like this."

It's bear mating season, and many male bears are out looking - sometimes recklessly - for females, so drivers on rural roads should be watchful, hunting guide Daniel Larocque told the Canadian television network CBC.

The accident occurred near the town of Luskville, about 25 miles northwest of Ottawa, Ontario.

I like how you say the bear was innocent and the humans wasn't.

      Way to go, traitor

Yes, it's easy to blame the bears for this. When it comes to humans vs. bears, bears are in the minority (even in Canada), they have no access to voting, they don't control the media, they are pushed around at the whims of humans who invade their forests to demolish trees and construct roads. I guess if someone drove into your home property, unannounced, while you were foraging, and knocked your limp body into a speeding SUV, where you were impaled by glass and steel, it would be your fault too. My deepest sympathy goes to all the victims in this tragedy, but blaming the bear does little to erase the sadness or prevent a recurrence in the future. More natural overpasses for animals, and roadside fences might help though.

It's sad the way people feel the need to make jokes about life and death situations.

  3. Buy an SUV cause an accident!

@RHC; Just yet another response from a typically defensive SUV owner... "Res ipsa loquitur" !

Given your exhibition of logical reasoning in your reply to Sheila above.....it now makes perfect sense.....you are the retarded boy hurt by the flying deer referenced in the story above, aren't you?

It's really sad once you think about it. If it was your loved ones who died how would you explain that to others? They were killed by a flying bear? And the folks in the Pontiac might be having survivor's guilt....at least I would be. Based off what information was available, not sure who you can blame in such a tragedy.

Ok...I would NOT want to be the first responders to that wreak! In the pic, you can see something red and bloody behind the SUV. I hope that was the bear!

  13. Buy an SUV cause an accident!

@Denizen Kate; I guess being a soccer Mom means you have to buy that Big SUV, just to fit in with the other Gas Hogs owned by selfish parents. You obviously don't know or don't care to know that while SUV's accounted for less than 18% of all vehicles sales in the states in 2005, they were involved in more than 32% of all accidents that year.

SUV's don't cause accidents, people who can't drive cause accidents. Most people who can't drive and know they can't drive so they buy big SUV's to feel safe. Same reason Asians buy Toyotas, since Asian's have no idea how to drive, why would they need brakes???

OMG...shut up. The PONTIAC hit the bear first. Did you read this story just to rant about SUV's?–I guess any platform will do for you.

So, you tell me what I should drive my family of six around in. I live in a cold weather state, so it needs to be good in the snow. So far, a military troop transport or an SUV are the only options.

First, there is not a direct tie from number of SUVs purchased in a year to the ACTUAL number of SUVs on the road. I'm sure you must realize this, but people can still drive SUVs from previous years.
Second, the SUV was not the cause of the accident. Police will determine if it was the fault of the Pontiac (a CAR) or if it was the bear. I assume that you are able to avoid a bear literally flying directly at you just because you are in a car instead of a SUV?

I am not seeing a point in your post that has anything to do with this accident. Only bitterness-tinged rambling,

    • Buy an SUV cause an accident!

@DAS; You are correct, that was a typo It should have read that the number of SUV'S on the road in 2005, not sales of SUV's in 2005. In 2005 the sales of SUV's would have been higher than 18%, thanks for catching that. As for an SUV's avoiding accidents its pretty much a given that its far less than a car, since the maneuverability of a car is far greater than that of an SUV.
