2 people die as bear flies through SUV

A bizarre auto accident involving two vehicles and a bear has left two people and the bear dead, Canadian authorities said.

Police in Quebec said a 300-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire. The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, regional police spokesman Officer Martin Fournel said.

"It was a 300-pound bullet," he said.

The SUV's 35-year-old female driver and a 40-year-old man sitting behind her were killed; a 28-year-old front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Fournel said. In the Pontiac, neither the driver, a 23-year-old man, nor his 19-year-old male passenger was hurt.

No alcohol or drugs were involved, and police are still trying to determine each vehicle's speed in the 90 kph (56 mph) zone, Fournel said, adding that charges are unlikely.

"It's a first, there's no doubt about that," he said. "We had similar accident several years ago with a deer going through the windshield and ending up in the back seat, where it injured a boy. He wasn't killed, he was hurt. But it was not like this."

It's bear mating season, and many male bears are out looking - sometimes recklessly - for females, so drivers on rural roads should be watchful, hunting guide Daniel Larocque told the Canadian television network CBC.

The accident occurred near the town of Luskville, about 25 miles northwest of Ottawa, Ontario.

I bet the insurance company won't pay saying it was an "Act of God". But then again, this is Canada where insurance companies don't own all the politicians.

I wonder if the young men who hit the bear hit it "by accident" or meant to hit it like many do when they see animals on the road. In this case, such antics killed two humans and the bear.

    • Really?

Yes. Your intelligence is formidable. Someone driving a tiny car intentionally tried to hit a 300 pound bear. Do you even have a driver's license?

What a stupid thing to say. Why would you even assume that?

If I was driving a Pontiac Sunfire, I definately would not WANT to hit a 300 pound bear. I wouldn't want to hit a squirrel in that car! You're crazy!

Jean, you aren't too bright, are you? It would be best if you bought a ticket to your local zoo and took a look at a bear.

If you don't understand why your comment is asinine after that, then there is no hope for your type.

Are you worried these mad men will go and try to run over a horse or a moose intentionally next time? lmfao.

Wow...I can't believe what I'm reading....Some of you Americans are really dumb and ignorant. How can you even say stuff like that, these people DIED FFS, it's an accident, sh!t happens. I live here in "la belle Province" This happened about 45 miles from my house, my wife was on that same road on her way home from...You guessed it...Bear hunting with her friends ( Yes, we have REAL women here, beautiful and made to kill..LOL)Now please, for those of you that have nothing better to say than stupidities, please refrain, try and use that "widdle" pea in your noggin and think about the people involved and their families.

The fact that this news is even on CNN kind of proves how rare of an incident this is. The accident happened in Luskville Quebec....RURAL Quebec on a 90 km/h ( 56 mp/h ) road. Now....Google Luskville Quebec and highway 148..You might get a better understanding and if you have nothing good to say please STFU and go back to your trailer.....

Thanks for using the huge pea in your noggin to generalize a country 10 times the size of yours from a few comments on the internet. Calm down buddy...

    • Seriously

Dick, look, you are a piece of garbage as well. You are just a little worse being from the laughing stock of North America (at least Mexico is warm). Bear hunting wife? I bet she lets you shave her back. You know you live in a trailer or you wouldn't have thrown that out there. Plus, to top it off, you live in one of the least-civilized places in Canada. How sad!

See Dick, anyone can make a generalization from what they read on a freaking blog. You need to get a life, take your Ministry of Health card to your GP and get him to either correct the amount of meds you are on or start you on some. Good luck – you definitely need it.

CW, I don't know what "10 times the size of yours" has to do with anything (because you're clearly not talking about the size of anything that matters) but Rick did say "Some of you Americans" and based on a reading of these posts he is 100% correct.

After reading some of these comments I have lost faith in humanity, two innocent people, and a bear died for feck sake.

Dear Canada, not all Americans are like this, the ones making jokes about this are also hated about Americans.

Most times it's best to leave the tu rds alone instead of commenting...you only make them eager to do it more. Trolls are EVERYWHERE

Well, I am an American living in NC, and I don't think it's a "non-story" at all. We recently had a bear killed by a car on a highway right here near Raleigh, which could have had the same tragic end as the one in Canada. I AM appalled by the joking posts here – 2 PEOPLE WERE TRAGICALLY KILLED, and people are making jokes about the bear drinking, etc.?! There are thoughtless people everywhere, and America certainly can't claim all of them. I'm not sure how one can tell what country a posting is from (??). Anyway, prayers sent to those families affected by this awful, freak accident. I, for one, consider Canadians to be my neighbors and friends.

We hit a cow one time with a Mitsubishi Montero. The farmer was trying to cross a cow with a leash. Cow wouldn't move, farmer wouldn't let go. Farmer and cow in the middle of the road. In the blink of an eye cow flew over roof top.

A farmer "trying to cross a cow with a leash"? I never knew that a cow could be crossed with any other species, much less with a leash.
