2 people die as bear flies through SUV

A bizarre auto accident involving two vehicles and a bear has left two people and the bear dead, Canadian authorities said.

Police in Quebec said a 300-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire. The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, regional police spokesman Officer Martin Fournel said.

"It was a 300-pound bullet," he said.

The SUV's 35-year-old female driver and a 40-year-old man sitting behind her were killed; a 28-year-old front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Fournel said. In the Pontiac, neither the driver, a 23-year-old man, nor his 19-year-old male passenger was hurt.

No alcohol or drugs were involved, and police are still trying to determine each vehicle's speed in the 90 kph (56 mph) zone, Fournel said, adding that charges are unlikely.

"It's a first, there's no doubt about that," he said. "We had similar accident several years ago with a deer going through the windshield and ending up in the back seat, where it injured a boy. He wasn't killed, he was hurt. But it was not like this."

It's bear mating season, and many male bears are out looking - sometimes recklessly - for females, so drivers on rural roads should be watchful, hunting guide Daniel Larocque told the Canadian television network CBC.

The accident occurred near the town of Luskville, about 25 miles northwest of Ottawa, Ontario.

"No alcohol or drugs were involved...".

Ah, thank you for that. From word one of article, I just couldn't decide if this accident involved alcohol or drugs until I read that.

Well, I can see that some trailer trash Americans will give America a bad name yet again. I joke around as much as the next guy but some people are crossing a line. What is it about Canada that makes you be so hateful, you obviously have never been here. Get that shotgun that you are fighting for the right to have and shoot yourself in the foot and go to a HMO since you probably don't have a job so no insurance. And if you want to make the world a better place, don't reproduce.

Lol @ Canadian Man – you sure are jealous of us. And rightfully so.

Your insults are childish, unimaginative, and incorrect. We have jobs, proven by the $6400 more we earn per capita than you. We have insurance, proven by the influx of Canadians rushing to receive US procedures rather than wait for subpar "healthcare" at home. Some of us have trailers – most of us have very large houses on very large plots of land, with very large cars that use very large amounts of gas.

Hey, get a sense of humor or a thicker skin. There was no real insult there to warrant such an ignorant reply. Why are you overly sensitive about bruins?

I've heard of this same thing happening with a deer. Someone hit the deer and sheared it in half. One half went through someone's windshield and killed a friend's brother.

It's amazing the amount of response this non story elicts from American readers. If it had been about something important in Canada no one would have given it a second glance...and the stupidity of a lot of the comments is really amazing. Small wonder you guys have the reputation you do.

How was it that no charges are pending, how bout speeding? The force it took for a 300 lbs bear to not just be pushed, but forced into the air and cross a highway and thru an SUV....the bear had to be hit by the car going over 56 mph....

Wow, great reporting skills. You show a picture of a midsize SUV and say the 300 lb bear went through its window. Yet in the article you say it was a Pontiac Sunfire which is a small car not an SUV. No very thorough on this article.

Not very thorough in your reading...it said the CAR hit the bear and sent it hurtling into the SUV.

I saw a guy running bare on a highway once. Nobody ever hit him. There is a definite disregard for bears. Somebody ought to pay for this example of animal cruelty.
