2 people die as bear flies through SUV

A bizarre auto accident involving two vehicles and a bear has left two people and the bear dead, Canadian authorities said.

Police in Quebec said a 300-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire. The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, regional police spokesman Officer Martin Fournel said.

"It was a 300-pound bullet," he said.

The SUV's 35-year-old female driver and a 40-year-old man sitting behind her were killed; a 28-year-old front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Fournel said. In the Pontiac, neither the driver, a 23-year-old man, nor his 19-year-old male passenger was hurt.

No alcohol or drugs were involved, and police are still trying to determine each vehicle's speed in the 90 kph (56 mph) zone, Fournel said, adding that charges are unlikely.

"It's a first, there's no doubt about that," he said. "We had similar accident several years ago with a deer going through the windshield and ending up in the back seat, where it injured a boy. He wasn't killed, he was hurt. But it was not like this."

It's bear mating season, and many male bears are out looking - sometimes recklessly - for females, so drivers on rural roads should be watchful, hunting guide Daniel Larocque told the Canadian television network CBC.

The accident occurred near the town of Luskville, about 25 miles northwest of Ottawa, Ontario.

A new saying is born in Quebec. When asked, how far do you live from Quebec? The answer will be 5 kilometers, as the bear flies. Of course, it will be all in French. Sacreblue!

Big Brain – but no compassion whatsoever! Or a caring heart for that matter. Just an empty shell of a person really.

We've had a near bear experience. They are huge and amazingly heavy (pure muscle) creatures. Thank goodness for brakes and headlights or it would have surely been curtains. The running bear only looked up for a split second when it was finished clearing the front bumper. Condolences to the families of the humans and the bears.

This happened to my family, too!

It was almost 20 years ago on Oregon's Hwy 101. A black bear I believe came rolling down a hill and crossed 4 lanes of traffic in front of the family Chevy van. My family was on our way back home from a trip and that Chevy saved our life! Killed the bear, though 🙁 Somehow the van made it through after repairs. As a 7 year old, it gave me quite a scare. I feel terrible for the people who lost their life.

"no alcohol or drugs were involved". So if one of the drivers had a couple of beers would they be blamed for this?

Too bad the 23 yr old male driver wasn't killed in the accident. Clearly he wasn't paying attention or speeding way to fast if you can't avoid a slow moving 300 pound bear.

Fail. Bears can top out at 25mph. They are extraordinarily fast animals.

@ Alter Ego, unlike some people, I wasn't talking about all Americans only about the few that makes dumb comments, but if the shoe fits. Get into that big car of yours that uses a lot of gas (who cares about environment right?) get your your big garage attached to your big house, close the door and take a nap.

Bill-No, we are one of 2 industrialized nations, the other being China, that has refused to sign the Kyoto Treaty. We are THE largest polluter on earth. And, Canada has an excellent healthcare system, with wait times for a doctor's office visit being comparable as in the U.S. Please keep your ignorant, uninformed comments to yourself or your like-minded (feeble) friends. You're an embarrassment to intelligent Americans.

It's hilarious to see a Canadian knock the US lifestyle, seeing as the two cultures are virtually indistinguishable.

"Angry at Gov", no, China is the world's biggest polluter. And Australia is the world biggest energy consumer per capita.

My posts are not against all Americans, morons are morons, whatever country they's in. I take offense to people who dismiss this story's worthiness because it's "only 2 Canadians that died". I'm not fighting for who's the better country here, but who's the bigger person.

To Mike's comment, although it may appear the countries lifestyles are similar, there's many differences in the internal structure and politics that makes both nations very different. Don't get influenced by stupid jokes on American TV, there's nothing realistic about the way Canadians are portrayed.

There are also a large number of Canadians who drive gas guzzling SUV's and live in monster homes with monster garages attached.
