A bizarre auto accident involving two vehicles and a bear has left two people and the bear dead, Canadian authorities said.
Police in Quebec said a 300-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire. The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, regional police spokesman Officer Martin Fournel said.
"It was a 300-pound bullet," he said.
The SUV's 35-year-old female driver and a 40-year-old man sitting behind her were killed; a 28-year-old front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Fournel said. In the Pontiac, neither the driver, a 23-year-old man, nor his 19-year-old male passenger was hurt.
No alcohol or drugs were involved, and police are still trying to determine each vehicle's speed in the 90 kph (56 mph) zone, Fournel said, adding that charges are unlikely.
"It's a first, there's no doubt about that," he said. "We had similar accident several years ago with a deer going through the windshield and ending up in the back seat, where it injured a boy. He wasn't killed, he was hurt. But it was not like this."
It's bear mating season, and many male bears are out looking - sometimes recklessly - for females, so drivers on rural roads should be watchful, hunting guide Daniel Larocque told the Canadian television network CBC.
The accident occurred near the town of Luskville, about 25 miles northwest of Ottawa, Ontario.
As someone who knows the family of one of the deceased – I beg everyone on here to think of their families.
Imagine how you would feel if they were your loved ones and you read some of the things that are being said on here. It isn't Obama's fault, Bush's fault or anyone's fault. It was an ACCIDENT!
They're horrible, but they do happen.
And people should remember the people involved, and even the animal – but the comments section of an article about an acident that resulted in death is NOT the place to make fun of them, blame others or any of that.
Before you post – please have some common sense and compassion for the families involved!
I am so sorry to hear of this. What a horrific accident. To all that find humor in this....post elsewhere!
I post my jokes on another news site.
Wow! What a horrible accident. Even if they were going to fast, which it doesn't state if they were, what are the chances you would hit a bear and send it through some else's car window. Really sad! I'll send up a prayer for their families.
the key here is the Sunfire accelerated the carcass toward the SUV going in the opposing direction. This made the two speeds additive so that the resulting collision was worse than if the SUV had just hit the animal. You really need to be ready to duck at all times to save yourself. the same is true when a wheel comes off a car going the other way.
You can guess what a basket case the sunfire occupants are in. Freak accident or not, such things tear people apart inside.
Why would you even say something so heartless and offensive to the victims – honestly.
It happened in Canada, you troll.
Cant believe how cruel and ignorant the person is that said the people and the dead ones should be arressted!! You are pathetic!!!
I pray they family has better days ahead.
CANADA SUCKS!!
YOU SUCK!1
They say no alcohol was involved. Did they check the bear?
All you people that are offended by a bit humor and can't "bear" to read the posts, go elsewhere!
This story is un-BEAR-able.
We all have to look out in this BEAR MARKET ! !
Hi I read all the comments that have been Posted. And come to find that we are all human being, and that it makes know difference where we are from. Can't we all live together in peace and harmony some day. Let's start now. The only thing the bear wanted to do was to cross the road to the other side. But unforeseen act of motion took place, and cause a terrible accident. Please my friends let keep Love in the family not Hate. John Lennon
Guess real Bruins don't like canadians either.
Wow...one page of comments is all I can stand to read...I can only assume the other 15 pages have much of the same rude crap (with the odd civil comment stuck in here and there). There is a place for stupid jokes and nasty comments and this isn't it. Imagine how that passenger feels after watching their friends or family die right in front of them.
Have there always been so many cold, sarcastic and mean-spirited people in the world or is it just that the internet gives them more of a voice? Either way, it's pretty sad...
welcome to the internet. good thing you have never found encyclopedia dramatica.
Get over it.
Amen, disgusted. People like Billy think it's cool to be mean-spirited and unfeeling. Don't bother trolling me, just noticed this comment on top, now leaving.
stop whining would you? the internet has been around for years and people posting comments like these is nothing new. i am so glad that i no longer have to hear from citizens like you who think harsh internet comments are the world's worst problems.
"Have there always been so many cold, sarcastic and mean-spirited people in the world or is it just that the internet gives them more of a voice?"
I always wonder the same exact thing.
you people must not get out of your houses often because there are plenty of those people in the world. but i can see rather than making the world a better place you'd rather sit around crying and complaining like the immature little children you are.
omg stop complaining. why are you acting like this is something new....this is the internet learn to deal with free speech idiots
Read "The Sociopath Next Door" by Dr. Martha Stout who alleges that 1 in 25 people are sociopaths. Sometimes I think most of the 1 in 25 spend a lot of time spewing their crap on comment boards.
Welcome to the internet, chief.
It's pretty common these days to read crap like these comments. That doesn't make it OK, though. I do wonder why so many comments are horrible and heartless. I think that 90 percent of the people who read something aren't crazy and horrible, but most of the people who feel the need to comment are. They are looking for ways to make the world worse to make themselves feel better, and this is how they do it. I don't think that they represent the country in the slightest. They are sad, sick people who don't know how to cure themselves. That's all.
**THIS JUST IN** An autopsy revealed that the bear that wandered onto the highway, apparently had an alcohol level 3 times the "legal" limit. Tests revealed amounts of "CANADIAN CLUB WHISKEY" & "HONEY OIL" derrived from "Hash"!
Sounds like bear burgers to me.
