2 people die as bear flies through SUV

A bizarre auto accident involving two vehicles and a bear has left two people and the bear dead, Canadian authorities said.

Police in Quebec said a 300-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire. The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, regional police spokesman Officer Martin Fournel said.

"It was a 300-pound bullet," he said.

The SUV's 35-year-old female driver and a 40-year-old man sitting behind her were killed; a 28-year-old front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Fournel said. In the Pontiac, neither the driver, a 23-year-old man, nor his 19-year-old male passenger was hurt.

No alcohol or drugs were involved, and police are still trying to determine each vehicle's speed in the 90 kph (56 mph) zone, Fournel said, adding that charges are unlikely.

"It's a first, there's no doubt about that," he said. "We had similar accident several years ago with a deer going through the windshield and ending up in the back seat, where it injured a boy. He wasn't killed, he was hurt. But it was not like this."

It's bear mating season, and many male bears are out looking - sometimes recklessly - for females, so drivers on rural roads should be watchful, hunting guide Daniel Larocque told the Canadian television network CBC.

The accident occurred near the town of Luskville, about 25 miles northwest of Ottawa, Ontario.

Um....no. Most Americans are overweight. You're confusing overweight with obese.

A Sunfire hit a 300lb bear and sent it airborne with such force it went straight through an SUV going the other way, and the people in the Sunfire were ok? Wow....go Pontiac!

I was thinking the same ... I had one and I don't think it would have been much against a squirrel much less a bear! LOL

The force applied to the Pontiac was much less than the force applied to the SUV. Also, it presumably hit the front bumber of the Pontiac, which is (obviously) much stronger than the windshield. Since the bear wasn't moving when struck by the car, the relative speed between the bear and the car would have only been the speed of the car (~55 mph.) However, since it propelled the bear through the air and near that speed (probably ~50 mph,) and the SUV was traveling the opposite direction, the relative speed between the SUV and the bear was likely over 100 mph. An object traveling 100 mph has a lot more momentum than one traveling 50 mph and bumpers are much stronger than windshields. Having said that, I'm guessing the Pontiac's front end was severely damaged.

People died here. It was a freak accident that could have happened to anyone traveling that road. This is not the place for jokes, puns, or claims of fakery. Cut it with the debates around Texas, George W. Bush, and other political stuff. Family members and friends of those who died may be reading this. How about some condolences and some expressions just plain human empathy? Guess that's too much to ask in this day and ago.

People have Died, a Bear has died, and a Pathfinder has been assaulted by a sunfire by use of flying bear. It was a freak car accident. Right now, more people then this are dying far more tragically, and there's a flame war going on on whether this is tragic or funny.
Here's a heads up – only reason this is on CNN is because it's odd. Daily people hit bears, moose, and other large animals in Canada – and die. So if you have issues with people making light of it – blame CNN for posting it. My sympathies to the family's of those that died – but who exactly expects to go via a Bear Bullet?

haha, I don't think that would go over well for China. While the U.S. needs China to borrow from, China needs the U.S. even more to buy their stuff. The Chinese economy would collapse if the U.S. stopped trading with them and/or the U.S. decided it wasn't going to pay back its debt to them.

What I am wondering is: How do you not notice a 300 lb black bear in the road? Only way I can see it is if you were coming around a corner or some other "blind spot" in which you could not see the road ahead of you were the bear was. Otherwise, I just don't see how this happened. Very sad, for the people and the bear.

I gotta say it's important to be respectful of the families' deceased, but at the same time, I think humor would help them cope.

If there is an afterlife/resurrection. Then those two people are probably laughing their asses saying, "Did we really get killed colliding with a flying bear?"

As for the bear, since it was mating season, he's enjoying his 72 female bear virgins.
