Elephant kills man in India

A wild elephant trampled a man to death in Mysore, India, Wednesday, creating panic in the city.

Four elephants bore through the city around 6 a.m., straying from the town of Tirumakudalu Narsipura, about 35 kilometers (21 miles) from Mysore, according to The Times of India. One elephant was seen trampling to death a 55-year-old security guard at a bank ATM. The elephant also attacked a cow in the market and a moving bus in the street.

“The forest guards and officials from the Mysore zoo were alerted,” State Higher Education Minister S.A. Ramdas told the Times. “They rushed to the spot to control the jumbos by tranquilizing them.”

Two of the more destructive elephants were tranquilized, the Times reported, citing local officials. One barged into a women’s college compound and roamed the grounds while the other wreaked havoc in a residential area.

As a precaution, schools and colleges were closed for the day and extra police deployed.

      Wild elephants running in the streets chasing cars, people, buses and cows... Hmm .. Where I live we have the same thing going on but the animals are squirrels, chipmunks and little tiny sparrow birds. One more reason to live the gool ole USA.
      Anyd why is that dumba$$ in the video approaching the elephant? The 2nd guy has to pull him away. Now I know how people get killed by an elephant on a city street. Normal people would see an elephant in the street and run the other way screaming like a little girl. This guy goes toward the animal. Duh.......

      To forgive your sins. Mercy is God withholding his wrath and Grace is God's undeserved favor. God took the wrath upon him for yours and everyone's sins, so he was nailed to the cross. It is the only belief system( and not religion), that is not performance based but grace based.

    1) Elephants are not revered as Gods, and neither are cows... they are considered "sacred", having symbolic value and deserving respect. They are honored, not worshiped.

    2) Ganesh is not the "protector of obstacles", he is the remover of obstacles.

    C'mon CNN, don't you have any brown people in your office you can consult about these stories before you go on the air perpetuating misconceptions?

      I think that one elephant who was chasing the bus did not mean to attack anyone. He was just late for work and was trying to catch the bus

    happens all the time in kerala,especially during temple festival,my hometown has those temple festival every year and i love everything about it except the way they treat the elephants.man is so mean,cruel ,they make them stand for days without rest or food or water and finally on the 10 th day(end of festival) either of the 10 elephants will go mad and kill someone.how can people overlook that. 😦 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD57_fJu-b4 this video is of the same temple i am talking about,you can see only 6 of them in video,rest are there to the sides.i love the melam to the core ,its like listening to the rock metal lol lol there is ritual where in i am supposed to drop the donation into a gold vessel kept in front of the deity which is kept on top of the main elephant of the group of 10.when its my turn,all i can look is into the sad,irritated,tears filled eyes of the elephants.and all that i pray is dnt let anyone go mad and kill anyone.

      You pray that they don't go mad. I pray that people just let animals live their lives. We do not need to interfere. Honestly, we don't need elephants working for us, in any capacity. Never.

    Hi Max,
    I am sorry to say that west does not understand Hindu religion. Hindu religion sees God everywhere and in everything. We dont treat cows are trees as God. But we respect nature, trees, cows etc as much as we respect mother. This is because we are depending on them. It is due lack of that respect for nature that we are destroying the nature and creating problems for future generations. Modern India is no way exception for this. It is also following the world.

    So I request you to know the facts before making fun of anything, especially when it hurts some one.

      @KeeKeeDee

      What a Pathetic thing to say!! i mean really! ... Especially to Indians who have been one of the biggest supporters of USA. Just because you have a 'forum' that posts things about India and Hindus doesnt mean you can be Stereotypical about it.

      And hey its your JOB to report whats happenign in India anyways, because there are millions of us living there as immigrants and citizens. And by sayign 'West' Krishna didnt say anything wrong. America is mostly solely deemed as 'westerners' because of the whole arab situation right now. but to India almost everythign is west, Arabs, Europe and America. and you know what, they do the same thing everywhere... so dont take it personally. its just that Indians feel strange when Americans, that are mostly sensible, come out and say Ignorant crap which you normally would to an enemy states like in the middle east.

      @KeeKeeDee

      Wow way to generalize on my generalization. Since you are american let me point out that Americans and Canadians will PUT DOWN ANY creature that attacks/kills a Human. be it dogs, horses, wild animals .. etc

      Naturally WWF originates in US and everyone knows a good majority of americans are very caring of animals. So do many countries.. but Police/public issues are a different case than this. Please guarantee me if a police officer in your country would let the animal live after it has killed a human.

      I dont know why you are pickign out generalized arguments personally against USA... its frikkin wierd and frustrating to have someone's post being turned into a pathetic direction which it was not intended for.

    They were probably young elephants that strayed from their family group. If the elephant teenagers are not around adults, they become very destructive. Learned that from National Geographic.

    I like that the animals were tranquilized, if that has happened in the US, those poor animals would been destroyed with machine guns by crazy rambo wannabes, and then the air force would bomb the forest to send a message to other elephants of what would happen if they try to do the same.. at least in India people is not crazy to do things like that
