Elephant kills man in India

A wild elephant trampled a man to death in Mysore, India, Wednesday, creating panic in the city.

Four elephants bore through the city around 6 a.m., straying from the town of Tirumakudalu Narsipura, about 35 kilometers (21 miles) from Mysore, according to The Times of India. One elephant was seen trampling to death a 55-year-old security guard at a bank ATM. The elephant also attacked a cow in the market and a moving bus in the street.

“The forest guards and officials from the Mysore zoo were alerted,” State Higher Education Minister S.A. Ramdas told the Times. “They rushed to the spot to control the jumbos by tranquilizing them.”

Two of the more destructive elephants were tranquilized, the Times reported, citing local officials. One barged into a women’s college compound and roamed the grounds while the other wreaked havoc in a residential area.

As a precaution, schools and colleges were closed for the day and extra police deployed.

spoo, you are an idiot and no nothing of MY country. we do not run arround shooting machine guns as you so stupidly suggested. at least we put the safety of humans above animals in our habitat. what most of you tree hugging atheistic idiots dont get is that all life, including HUMAN came from this planet. we all have the right and instinct to protect and propagate our species. we have just began to understand the mistakes we made in the past in reference to the way we treat other life that lives alog side us. we do not treat our little girls as pariahs as they do in INDIA, middle east, and most of asia. at least we put higher importance on human life rather than on animals. check your own before you critisize mine idiot

You need to look up the word "pariah" before you use it again. Really.

I really don't know why CNN posts these stories from around the world...I hope they don't assume their target audience knows of a world beyond Florida!! If the person trampled to death was an American tourist instead of a poor third-world secuirty guard, you could bet on human interest stories with interviews with his first grade teacher and pastor, and eulogies on how he went backpacking in the wild east to save the world. And I'm sure the irreverence which their readers are so eager to put on display for a story which is as alien to them as is that of a cat stuck on a tree in some one-street podunk town in rural Dakota is to me, would be sharply curtailed.

Shub, really, you never heard of a cat stuck in a tree? I'm an ELEPHANT and I've heard of cats being stuck in trees. You should get out more often.

I feel bad what happened to the poor man. Thankfully it happened in India where the locals are more rational when it comes to stuff like this. The elephants are getting pushed out of their natural habitat. They captured them and took them back into the wild. When you look at the hysterics in this country and words like "rampage" on our news no wonder idiot cops are shooting fake alligators on lawns.

What a stupid analysis by anchor that Elephant was not killed because there is an elephant God in Hinduism. Americans are so much ignorant and they know nothing about other countries and their rules, culture and interpret according to their own little brains. Elephant was not killed because it is supposed to be a wild animal who is under protection by wild animal act in India just like tigers and other wild animal. India is proud to be rich in different animals in our national parks, sanctuaries and jungle. We don't kill if we can handle the situation by tranquilising. Also it was not fault of elephant if by mistake it entered city and it's behaviour was what an animal do. Another thing what the hell God has to do with this as we don't believe every elephant is supposed to be Ganesha. You need to read story behind Ganesha. Very stupid and funny narration by news anchor.

Wow...this story is on front page of CNN. Just 2-3 days back there were humans beaten up in India, who were protesting against corruption, CNN do not think that is Important. That is not on front page. Anderson Cooper, entire CNN is rediculist.

Elephants are not killed in India not because they are considered Gods, but because they are protected animals under the Animal Protection Act. While the bigger one of the two that strayed into the city in the early morning, went into a swampy garden on the outskirts of the city and stayed there, the other 8-year-old baby tusker went on rampage because it was separated from the herd and panicked because of the people who tried to drive it away.

Yeah, I caught that mistake. It's an all-too-common generalization in the US. As I stated below, this CNN reporter is an idiiot. Thank you for providing real information.

Yes, thank you for the information, the American Media is embarrassing. It's mostly drama and hysterics not facts. They have a saying: "if it bleeds it leads".

The question remains, why did the elephants wander into the town. Drought in their usual territory?
At least they tranquilized it and relocated them, rather than what we'd do here, shoot it dead.
