Alabama governor signs 'tough' immigration law

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a "tough illegal immigration law" Thursday morning, his press office said.

The bill is considered by both supporters and critics to be among the toughest in the nation, even stricter than controversial laws in Arizona and Georgia.

Under the new law, public schools will be required to determine the citizenship and immigration status of enrolling students through sworn affidavits or birth certificates.

Authorities will also be required to detain a person who they believe is in the country illegally if the person cannot produce proof of residency when stopped "for any reason."

Alabama businesses will  be required to use a database called E-Verify to look up the immigration status of new employees. The use of the database was recently endorsed after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a separate Arizona immigration law.

It will  be illegal for Alabama residents to knowingly give a ride or transport an illegal immigrant or for a landlord to knowingly rent a property to an illegal immigrant.

Cecillia Wang, managing attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union's immigrants rights project, called the bill "outrageous and blatantly unconstitutional" in an interview with The New York Times before Bentley signed it.

I agree with Alabama, this wouldn't go to supreme court because it was already upheld in us vs arizona. The states have the right to amend there own laws, and even tho us is based on immigrants. Please keep in mind that, that if you do the math immigrants don't
taxes and they violate our laws crossing into this country. I think immigrants deserve to enjoy the freedom we have, but breaking our laws and not paying our taxes isn't an argument. You can't debate it..

Another stunt by a white male who is trying to save his political career by doing stupid things. Obviously not the correct way to create jobs. We alll know it will be challenged in supreme court and will end up costing tax payers.

Those darn white people! How dare they not uphold the laws of the US. How dare those states do something that the Federal Government is supposed to do! Oh I guess if he was a minority it would be ok. Wake up

We are being taxes and billed to death anyway due to the illegal immigrants anyway, I'd rather have my hard earned money go towards keeping this law in place than any other cost they are creating.

Cost taxpayers money? Who are these "tax payers" that you speak of... oh, that's right. American citizens. What types of things do taxes pay for... hm... schools, for one. How is it NOT a good idea to make sure that persons not of American citizenship attend schools payed for by American tax payers? I want to pay for some kids education (who's parents give nothing back) just as much as you enjoy paying to keep rapists and murderers in prison. I'm not hating on kids, i'm just hating on freeloaders who take everything and give nothing in return.

I would rather pay for law enforcement than pay for people who are criminals (broke the law by coming here illegally) to collect welfare and get free health care at my expense.

  3. save the u.s.

Now if only the rest of the states could adopt this..half our deficit woud be gone.

It's bad enough our teens jobs are being taken by illegal immigrants, we have to pay for health care and they don't, we have to pay taxes and they don't, we pay for our kids to go to high school and theirs, we recycle our money back into our communities to stimulate our own economy and they send half of their earnings out of the country. Illegal immigrants can receive welfare. There's an estimated 20 million illegal immigrants, you do the math. Illegal immigrants leach off our tax money through government programs, and hardly contribute back to our economy, they just take and take. And if you want to say they do jobs people don't want to and are low paying you are wrong....with this economy anyone would be happy to make a few bucks over nothing. I've seen farms raided because of illegals where high school students are working there a week later.

What happened to good immigrants, like my parents, who came here legally. Work hard, pay their taxes, pay for everything themselves and dont rely on the govt for anything. They stimulate the economy and are outstanding Americans!!

Cheers to the governor for finally standing up to dependant illegals.

Maybe you should wake up? I am friends with many illegals, they'd love to pay taxes, they dont get free healthcare anymore than any other poor american does. They are unable to come here legally, we only allow 50k a year from mexico. 20 million / 50k = 400 years.
It will take 400 years with current laws for them to all come here. Guess what? Democrats and liberals, and non-racists want to let them work here legally, and tax them.

Republicans and racists want to spend billions of dollars to kick out an important part of our economy. You must wake up, immigrants built this country, and immigration can save this country.

Unless you are Native American, you fall in the "immigrant" category. And if anyone thinks that a police officer stopping you "for any reason" because you fit their idea of what an "immigrant" looks like and will make the distinction between a "good" immigrant and a "bad" immigrant, you are sorely mistaken. Do you think that they'll stop anyone who looks like a Canadian immigrant?

First, if "they" work, they pay taxes. they rent apartments, they buy food, they buy clothes, they go to church and they buy gas,. "They" do the work that your white ass kiddies wouldn't do. They become US citizens if possible after mountains of paperwork, they buy homes, open businesses and become just like you but not with white skin....all this crazy tea Bagger gov did was tick a lot of people off. Oh and one mre thing, the fastest growing segment of voter blocks in this country are Latinos.. And guess who they're going to vote for? NOT FOR THE OLD WHITE GUY!!! bawwwww

this type of bill should be federalized(is that a word) or at least on all border states so as to at least filter most illegals out.idaho wil end up with the residue and keep the pay low here for the working class citizens.

ADAM, we only let a certain number of immigrants in each year for a reason. Not all illegal immigrants want to pay taxes, and probably 40% of them in California do not. By the way, before you BLAME REPUBLICANS, Ronald Regan was the first President to allow a Mass Amnesty, thinking if they could stay legally they would pay taxes. HA! Look at California, that clearly hasn't helped them a bit.

Because clearly, illegal immigration is what's hurting Alabama's teen pregnancy rate, low literacy rate, rising obesity rate, crummy scores on standardized tests, low income levels, massive poisoning of the air, land and water, exploding abuse of crystal meth & prescription drugs, stagnant unemployment rate, corrupt politicians and enduring segregation. Clearly, this stuff was caused by...the Mexicans!

I love how Georgia and Alabama are passign "tough" immigration laws. You have no land borders in your state and no costal regions that are within 250 miles of another countriy's border. This is just political postering and racism refelcted in legislature. I am ashamed to be from the South...

And Josh, you are saying that illegal immigration isn't a problem because it isn't a border state? It is a problem anywhere there are illegals in this country. North – South – East or West. It is called people who don't respect our laws, and they never will if we don't enforce the ones we have. Do you know it is against the law for someoe to enter illegally?
