Alabama governor signs 'tough' immigration law

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a "tough illegal immigration law" Thursday morning, his press office said.

The bill is considered by both supporters and critics to be among the toughest in the nation, even stricter than controversial laws in Arizona and Georgia.

Under the new law, public schools will be required to determine the citizenship and immigration status of enrolling students through sworn affidavits or birth certificates.

Authorities will also be required to detain a person who they believe is in the country illegally if the person cannot produce proof of residency when stopped "for any reason."

Alabama businesses will  be required to use a database called E-Verify to look up the immigration status of new employees. The use of the database was recently endorsed after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a separate Arizona immigration law.

It will  be illegal for Alabama residents to knowingly give a ride or transport an illegal immigrant or for a landlord to knowingly rent a property to an illegal immigrant.

Cecillia Wang, managing attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union's immigrants rights project, called the bill "outrageous and blatantly unconstitutional" in an interview with The New York Times before Bentley signed it.

You can't read very well, can you? You just used both of those words as much or more than I have so far.

Try reading my responses. You might learn something (but probably not).

      Amen goodnews!!!!
It's up to us to encourage the representatives of our States to do their jobs. Citizens of the US are being stripped of our rights and freedoms. We are "politically incorrect" if we don't kneel and kiss the feet of Obama and his illegal immigrants! The main reason for him wanting amnesty for them is because he knows he is an illegal immigrant himself!!!

Changing my mind doesn't make me "a women [sic]", it makes me capable of rational thought. I decided that pointing out your constant logical errors was more important (and fun) than divorcing myself from this conversation.

If you have not lived in a county invaded by illegals you just don't know. 12 people to a single family house, parking in the front and back yard, basements with 6-10 mattresses. All of which brought down the value of my house. Having small children you think about .....coming to the country could be a child rapist, murderer, and have you be immunisized. The illegals children are now in school and my child gets their lesson then waits while the teacher struggles to teach it in spanish. Free breakfast and free lunch programs. The 7 11 with 6-9 people hanging out in front of the store in the morning waiting for someone to give them a job. Illegal is Illegal we have laws on the books not being enforced. way to go Alabama

dear steve; okay the funs over, lets get logical, if a doctor gives you three pills and tells you to take one every half hour // how long would they last? i will give you a min to think.

    • AmazingSteve

Bit off topic, but why not?

It would depend on the duration of each dose. Things don't clear from your system instantly, you know. You would, however, take the last pill one hour after you took the first one.

      Your turn:
What's the square root of -4, divided by 8?

Wow, the ACLU thinks its illegal to enforce a US law on the books. Talk about backwards day. Maybe this lady doesn't know the name of her own organization... AMERICAN Civil LIberties Union. Not ILLEGAL ALIENS Civil Liberties Union.

Immigration has become such a large issue, you gotta blame the Federal Government for not doing their job on the borders and such. I don't think Alabama is in the wrong, I do think that all those states are doing the federal government job though, and all those blowing yards in Congress, the house, and our president are way too focused on global matters instead taking care of home

Look I'm all for curbing illegal entry...but, what sort of person denies an "innocent Child" basic education (from going to School) because the parents are illegal immigrants. Sometimes in our bid to achieve & achieve, we case to be human in our decisions. Believe me, to a Child who is denied a basic Education, that law is Injustice.

Are we talking about an education.... or are we talking about indoctrination? Let's not go there... a whole other topic.

Most people need a lesson in the common vocabulary in this issue. 1. There is no such this as a illegal immigrant (political correctness). An real immigrant goes through the proper process of immigration ( a legal process). So call the people we are talking about what they are: illegal aliens. 2. Most of these people don't want to become American citizens. They come here to take what they can get and leave. This makes them purely migrant. So I guess my question is: Since there is no allegiance to this country by the majority of these people, do we owe them anything other than a swift boot to the ass to send them back to where they came from? Don't we have enough citizens that need the care and concern of their country? I am all for immigration... for those who have the courage and the stamina to become an American citizen by the proper process.
