Alabama governor signs 'tough' immigration law
Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a "tough illegal immigration law" Thursday morning, his press office said.
The bill is considered by both supporters and critics to be among the toughest in the nation, even stricter than controversial laws in Arizona and Georgia.
Under the new law, public schools will be required to determine the citizenship and immigration status of enrolling students through sworn affidavits or birth certificates.
Authorities will also be required to detain a person who they believe is in the country illegally if the person cannot produce proof of residency when stopped "for any reason."
Alabama businesses will be required to use a database called E-Verify to look up the immigration status of new employees. The use of the database was recently endorsed after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a separate Arizona immigration law.
It will be illegal for Alabama residents to knowingly give a ride or transport an illegal immigrant or for a landlord to knowingly rent a property to an illegal immigrant.
Cecillia Wang, managing attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union's immigrants rights project, called the bill "outrageous and blatantly unconstitutional" in an interview with The New York Times before Bentley signed it.

Almost every house here in Alabama has the Confederate flag on top and (if any) an American Flag down below. I'm not suprised – in fact – I could expect this coming. The State that beat black people for riding buses in the front seat has now given us this law. How appropriate...

I live in a small Alabama town and cant say that I know of anyone flying a confederate flag but after your post for some reason I'm starting to want to... but I don't own one ... In fact several on my street are flying American flags this weekend in remembrance of the many Alabamians in the military severing honorably in Iraq/Afgan

Umm crossing the bering strait doesn't make you "native american". It's not like we Americans invented conquest either, it's been ongoing around the world since the beginning of time. So to say that Indians are native to this land is completely false.

Actually that might not be accurate. Did they displace anyone else to take over the land? If not then they were there first into that area.

The true intent of the law is to protect the mentally retarded section of the population. That is , about 95% of the State's White Population. One has to spend some time in that place to realize how incredibly dumb the people are.

Lived all my life in Huntsville Alabama... You know; the design home of the Redstone Rocket, Saturn V moon rocket, and the shuttle.. For a dumb whittie I have advanced degrees in Computer/Electrical Engineering and masters degree in quantum physics of VLSI devices... How about you ?.... I like this law, we are over run with illegals in the manufacturing Alabama towns, they take jobs away from those that really need them, including blacks

Everything in the law was fine, except transporting an illegal. I think they meant to say providing help to transport them illegally, not give them a ride to a gas station. Atleast that's what I hope they meant.

How can we be considered racist? All because we want to take illegals back to mexico? If they would not come here illegally I dont believe anyone would have a problem. If American's were to go to another country our butts would be deported in a heartbeat. We wouldn't be able to live scott free there. Nor would we be allowed to recieve any type of government help. Alabama has come along way since the times of Dr. King. And for those of you who think we don't have a larg hispanic population, please come and spend some time in the larger cities and you will see what it is like here. The ACLU has also come out big time against the Florida governor's suggestion that those on welfare and other forms of public assistance should be subjected to drug testing, citing an infringement of personal rights. On a positive, CA has just figured out how to ban welfare recipients' EBT or cash cards meant for food and sustenance from being used in casinos and strip clubs.
Remember when the US used to use the example of people in the Soviet Union having to show their papers at the slightest whim of the authorities as an example of a people who were not free? The problem is we are now the home of the enchilada! Just this week I caught a neighbor (illegal btw) stealing landscaping rocks from a nearby elementary school. Not only were they stealing but they also send their illegal children to the school they were stealing from. That is wrong on multiple levels. Whatever it takes to rid this country of illegals is fine by me.
Chris, that would be why we already have laws against stealing. That's already illegal there, bud. I'm not even opposed to deporting illegal immigrants in theory, especially those who commit crimes. In fact, I would be all for that. But we're not going to deport 12 million people. It's just not going to happen. Maybe if we went all Nazi Germany on them or something, but I hope for our souls and our liberty we get nothing close to that. We have a problem. We need to deal with it. These laws, however, are emotional, reactionary, and not very well thought out. Just listen to the raw emotion/fear spewing out in these comments.
How silly, don't need to deport 12 Million illegals ... just take away the illegal's jobs by passing laws against those that hire them. ... with no jobs, no freebie handouts, they will leave on their own... Phil I don't support illegal inmigration at all, but I don't understand when you say illegals took our "good paying jobs". Majority of their jobs are low pay jobs. They can't work as engineers, lawyers, doctors, nurses, etc. Mcdonalds a "good paying job" or landscaping (maybe it is idk) but fast food jobs are not good jobs. However, they taking those jobs might hurt college kids
True, but how about this..illegals bring their kids and our tax money is spent rising illegals. The US spends millions on countries, i shouldnt have to pay for them to come and live here too!

Best part of all this, is that Legal Hispanics in this country are already the number one ethnic group in this country. Wtihin 50 years, it will be the dominant population as well. The question is what will they do with the country?

Know and work with a lot of legal Hispanics; Mexican and Cubans... God knows we consider them as Alabamians like ourselves .... in most part they are true melting pot Americans with the same values of God, family, and country. We are not against immigration just the illegals .. seems there are allot of illegals that are criminals in there own countries and are carrier of diseases
Smaller government NOT!!!!!! Governors all over the country are cutting the education budget so how are the schools in Alabama going to cover the extra staff and manpower it takes to check the status of students and enforce this law? Now you not only have local police checking the status you have schools too. Too many chiefs and not enough indians. This law is an accident waiting to happen.
How hard is it to ask for a birth certificate when someone comes to enroll a kid in school? Not very hard. This country is so GD lazy it makes me sick.
All Obummer would have to do is go on National TV and say the Feds are going to crack down on illegals and when found will be put in prison until deported. We don' have enough prisons you say? We have alot of people out of work who need jobs and money found will be taken and used for payroll and materials to bulid them.
It is not that tough. It has WAY too many outs. Instead, they need to require that ALL businesses e-verify and then stick to it. In addition, they need to put up X-Prizes for new equipment to replace the illegals that will leave at the low end.
