Alabama governor signs 'tough' immigration law

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a "tough illegal immigration law" Thursday morning, his press office said.

The bill is considered by both supporters and critics to be among the toughest in the nation, even stricter than controversial laws in Arizona and Georgia.

Under the new law, public schools will be required to determine the citizenship and immigration status of enrolling students through sworn affidavits or birth certificates.

Authorities will also be required to detain a person who they believe is in the country illegally if the person cannot produce proof of residency when stopped "for any reason."

Alabama businesses will  be required to use a database called E-Verify to look up the immigration status of new employees. The use of the database was recently endorsed after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a separate Arizona immigration law.

It will  be illegal for Alabama residents to knowingly give a ride or transport an illegal immigrant or for a landlord to knowingly rent a property to an illegal immigrant.

Cecillia Wang, managing attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union's immigrants rights project, called the bill "outrageous and blatantly unconstitutional" in an interview with The New York Times before Bentley signed it.

what about the homeowner that hires the immigrant to do their yard work?
what about the homeowner that hires the immigrant to clean their house?
what about the person that takes their kids to a house for daycare, and the house has immigrants?

I cannot wait to see the good citizens of alablabla tattle on each other. This should be a blast. And I bet the police turn their back on illegals working in "certain" peoples' yards or homes – like maybe white "certain" peoples.

LOL, this should be great. The big hypocritical right-wingers will soon make exceptions for homeowners and small business owners, just like Arizona – the other hypocritical states.

If you dont want illegals in the USA, dont hire them, and dont buy wine or vegetables or many fruits or any home built by a well established white developer. LOL

So your answer is to open our borders and let millions of people flood across. Then we can pay for all their education, health care and welfare. After all we taxpayers have lots of money to take care of them. We are going broke trying to take care of the rest of the world.

As a progessive Democrat, I applaud Alabama and the other states that are endeavoring to prevent further devastation imposed by their citizens by the ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION LAWBREAKERS - including the ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS and the LAWBREAKING BUSINESSES THAT HIRE THEM!

A Government which refuses to enforce its own laws is INTOLERABLE. The Federal Government refuses to enforce its laws, so the states must, as they cannot afford this ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION SCHEME ANY LONGER AND AMERICAN TAXPAYERS and LEGAL immigrants WILL NOT STAND FOR IT!

Good Law. Its about time. The illegals are making it difficult for legal tax paying immigrants to establish themselves while they get a free ride on everything. We are short money in schools and laying off teachers while valuable resources are being wasted on providing "freebies" to illegals. About time we looked at all immigration and see who is violating laws. Even legal work visa holders violate employment laws and they should be targeted too. People coming to the country on tourist visa should not be allowed to attend our schools

I grew up in El Paso a border city and first hand I have heard Mexican government public information radio and TV ads educating their public on how they can scam our systems here in the US once they cross illegally. Everything from free medical, subsidized housing, free school, free lunches for kids, food stamps and afforded all the laws that apply to US citizens. It is time that America understands that the Mexican Federal Government is exporting these people to us so they can send money back to Mexico which is the only way they can contribute to their economy. By the Way this happens to be the second highest source of income for their government. Wake All you fools that don't know!!!!!

Well, I'm not surprised illegals may be taking jobs from Alabamians. 95% of Alabamians are illiterate meaning the only jobs they can do would be what the illegals are doing....

The American Citizens of Alabama acknowledge that even the dull and ignorant have their point of view and thank you, Rosa Parks, for your posting even as you so clearly reflect the concept that those who know the least speak the loudest.

What if the people in Alabama don't WANT the jobs the illegals have been doing? It's pretty hard and HOT work! You think this will open up more jobs for US citizens? Think again. All this will do is drive prices up for the consumer. Wait and see!

This is exactly what is needed!!! My country has been invaded and the mass deportation of aliens must be accomplished. This set of laws provides the opportunity to restrict and prohibit illegal aliens for getting work, finding a place to live, and to have their children deprive American Citizen children the education the American Citizen child needs by overwhelming our educational system with those who do no belong here. Take every step possible to cause the illegal alien to self-deport. The ACLU says immigrant rights – what are they? The only right an immigrant has is to be deported. Call the President's Comment Line at 202-456-1111 and demand the mass deportation of illegal aliens. Obama says we can not expect to deport 12-15 million illegal aliens and I demand that we first try before giving up, and we must try very hard and with every means available. Remember – the path to citizenship is across my borders and back to their own country.

Let's see. I drive around in white skin. I don't worry about having my birth certificate or proof of residency with me. But if I were driving around in brown skin, I would be high risk for having to prove myself. I don't see how this law can be enforced without profiling. In fact I have 2 friends who were stopped and hassled by Border Patrol. One was a 4th generation New Mexican (school principal, ) the other a legal immigrant from Guatemala. Both incidents happened in AZ.

I am white and have NO problem with being pulled over and proving my citizenship – I carry my passport always. NOT all illegal immigrants have a brown skin- many other countries contribute to the problem also – , and I believe we should ALL be able to prove we are citizens here. We cannot continue to support the illegals and their freebies and it is time to stand up and send them home.

as a liberal and alabama resident i appluad this law . some contractors use illegal labor so they can underbid those who work americans. the chicken houses and other low end jobs are full of them cause they can pay them five dollars an hour pay no income taxes, carry no insurance or have to worry about unsafe working conditions. this law serves as a counterweight to all these reasons

If you are a citizen, carry proof, if illegal, leave - if legal immigrant, carry proof. If you are legal what is the problem, The only ones with a problem do not belong here anyway

It should just be remembered that a HUGE majority of all people in America are all immigrants. The statue of liberty says give me your poor your weak.... And so on. So just think about how your ancestors got to America when you think about these laws. Granted there are people who came into America the right way but there are alot of them who came here illegally. And also illegal immigrants often do jobs that we Americans Dont want to do and they do it with a smile.

Uhh, Boat Rider – perhaps actually stating facts would make your argument more plausible. In fact, we are not immigrants – the majority of us were born in this country which makes us AMERICANS!!. Those that are legal immigrants to this country went through the process to become citizens – they are now AMERICANS!! In fact, you can not come into this country illegally if you begin the process to become a citizen. You are issued a Permanent Resident Card until you complete the process to become a citizen. Seriously, write about what you know, not what you think. And, as for those jobs that you claim Americans don't want – can you imagine what would happen if those on welfare were forced to take those jobs – I'm sure you'd find some way to say how unfair that is also. Oh, and while I'm at it, can I go to Mexico, take a job that a Mexican doesn't want, pay no taxes, get free healthcare and then send the money I make back to the United States? Answer that one then you'll see why your statement and argument has no merit.

A huge majority of people in America are LEGAL immigrants, and there are laws governing the numbers from what countries can come in. The issue is LEGAL. My grandparents were immigrants, and they did it LEGALLY, and followed the rules for becoming a citizen. Why should anyone that can't obide by our laws be allowed to take advantage of us? Let the people that pay illegals to do their lawn, watch their kids, etc, pay real companies that hire American citizens – and pay a fair price for it. If there are not enough Citizens to do the jobs, then let the companies notify our government so they can let people in legally to handle the need. Let the immigrants follow the rules to get here and wait their turn. If they can't follow the first laws of getting here why do we want them?

And, since you've trampled upon the memories of those heroic immigrants who first settled this country – some more facts. They came to this country with the full intent of establishing a nation and remaining as it's citizens. They put everything on the line including their lives just to carve out an existence, not just for themselves but their future generations. They toiled in unberable conditions, with many expiring along the way. They contributed a portion of what little they had to their churches and their communities. They EARNED the right to be named citizens – American citizens!! What this law and laws like it serve to prevent are those that make a mockery of the true immigrant to this country and the true sprit of this country. I propose one more law that should be considered – idiots should not be allowed access to computers.
