Alabama governor signs 'tough' immigration law
Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a "tough illegal immigration law" Thursday morning, his press office said.
The bill is considered by both supporters and critics to be among the toughest in the nation, even stricter than controversial laws in Arizona and Georgia.
Under the new law, public schools will be required to determine the citizenship and immigration status of enrolling students through sworn affidavits or birth certificates.
Authorities will also be required to detain a person who they believe is in the country illegally if the person cannot produce proof of residency when stopped "for any reason."
Alabama businesses will be required to use a database called E-Verify to look up the immigration status of new employees. The use of the database was recently endorsed after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a separate Arizona immigration law.
It will be illegal for Alabama residents to knowingly give a ride or transport an illegal immigrant or for a landlord to knowingly rent a property to an illegal immigrant.
Cecillia Wang, managing attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union's immigrants rights project, called the bill "outrageous and blatantly unconstitutional" in an interview with The New York Times before Bentley signed it.

Excellent! When is New Jersey going to get one of these laws? Everyone says that Chris Christie is so tough. Lets see him go after blatant law breakers instead of harrassing state workers who are stuck having to deal with them.
My wife and I are LEGAL immigrants in the US and we pay through the nose to live here. We pay hundreds and hundreds in application fees and thousands for immigration lawyers as well as the same payroll, income and property tax that everyone else here legally pays.
Laws like those in the aritcle make us happy that we live here legally and work and pay our taxes on time. Those who shun the system cost the US. Pay your way illegals...!!!!!!11

Your posting shows your ignorance. The IRS and the SSA both have confirmed time after time that a large portion of the illegals do pay income/social security taxes. Were it now for their tax payments, SSA would have been bankrupt years ago.

Nope but how about giving ICE the resources to do a half way good job of processing immigration applications? How about establishing some kind of fair process whereby all of the illegals can pay their share of taxes?
So can I ask how many of you who are supporting this also support a national ID card proving citizenship that you must carry on you at all times and submit to authorities upon their request at any time? That's really the only way of enforcing it without detaining almost everyone stopped and asked. A driver's license is not proof of US citizenship as non-citizens are also eligible for them. International students (who contribute billions of dollars to our economy), international business people, tourists...do they all need to carry papers at all times to provide to the government?
Yes, actually by federal law all imigrants are required to carry their passport and visa at all times to prove status.
Actually, a visa stamp can be expired and the person still be here in perfectly legal immigration status.

For everyone complaining that making someone produce 'papers' showing they are legal... how is this any different from producing a drivers license. I will happily carry around another proof of citizenship, just like having a drivers license to prove that I am PROUD to be a LEGAL citizen of this country.

u know back in the day it was different for mexicans. my grandparents came here legally with work visas and applied for citizenship. they learned english and did whatever they could to keep their minimum wage jobs. now all i see are a bunch of lazy asses on welfare and food stamp collecting losers. there are still some good mexicans out there, but for the majority im tired of teenage girls getting pregnant and living off the government. im american, born and raised, but im proud to say that my grandparents did it the right way. those days are long gone.
