Glass staircase not dress friendly

For years, women across America have dealt with glass ceilings. But now, women in Ohio have a new problem - glass floors.

A $105 million courthouse opened in Franklin County, Ohio, on Monday, but the builders seemed to have forgotten one thing - the bottom of the stairs, reports affiliate 10TV. The staircase is made of glass.

Dress wearers need to avoid taking the stairs, according to Franklin County Judge Julie Lynch, who wears dresses under her robes almost every day.

"I wear dresses because that's my personal choice," Lynch told 10TV. "When you stand under the stairwell, you can see right up through them.”

She speculates that men, who didn’t take half the population into account, designed the stairs.

Attorney Lori Johnson was startled by the transparent stairs. She worries not only about stares, but also how many cell phones have cameras attached.

“The next thing you know, you’re on the internet,” Johnson said, according to 10TV. “It sounds like a lawsuit in the making.”

While security guards warn women about taking the stairs, it seems most are just hoping people will be mature about the situation.

"They hope people will be mature? That's not a solution," Lynch said to 10TV. "If we had mature people that didn't violate the law, we wouldn't have this building."

Couldn't they just paint the women's crotches to look like glass?

Yes, all women are stupid... Including the ones defending this design.
You haven't had a lot of luck with the ladies, have you? It's left you bitter.

Seriously! Who is EVER standing or laying under those stairs anyways? This is ridiculous and who would want to look up those women's dressses anyways.... ILLLLLLLLL. Get a life!

Uhm, who would ever get a shoe cam to video tape up women's skirts on an escalator? Or plant cameras in the women's washroom/changeroom? Or peep in someones windows? Nah, I can't possibly imagine anyone who would do that....

This is not a beach, not a gym, as some have suggested, it's a COURTHOUSE. It's hard enough being a female attorney, dealing with male judges, cops and other attorneys on a daily basis, and yes getting harassed, hit on, etc... without this new issue. Hoping all you guys have mothers, wives or daughters you plan on putting in skirts to parade up and down these stairs; maybe you'll get lucky and they'll have a photo posted on the web. Wait, I'm guessing the majority of you posting here don't even have girlfriends, which is why you're standing under staircases looking up dresses.

@KMP... yeah I'm sure my mother or sister or wife will be "parading" up those steps. You sound like one of those "but we're equal too" chicks... so how maybe you should just wear boxers and move on to your next ridiculous complaints. Why do men get to play professional football or sumn

I'm posting this again...I happen to know someone who works at the courthouse. Unless you run directly under the stair well (which is a non-traffic area) you can't see anything. I'm a woman, I wear skirts, I would use these stairs. You can't see anything unless you're very obviously trying. Couple that with the fact that there's a security guard standing close by... Some people just look for things to complain about. And, by the way, every element of the design of a building is green-lighted by the client. Designers aren't given free reign. If they were our buildings would look a lot cooler than they do. Not the first staircase with open or glass risers. Non story.

So, KMP, you're one of those "female lawyers". Surprised you aren't wearing one of those "power suits" favored by the likes of Hillary Clinton. Nice androgynous look. Not!

If you're so high-powered and motivated, go ahead and sue the builders then. I'm sure you'd have no case. Stop whining and do something about it if you've got your knickers in a twist over it.

In all fairness to KMP... there are some steps in Wheaton Mall in MD that are 100% glass. These steps at the courthouse are partly glass and are much more difficult to use for perverted reasons. I know because that is what i do with my day lol j/k

"Men are pigs...durp. I have it hard becuase they hit on me all day....durp. It's so hard being a women attorney, I get paid all this money and have to put up with sleezy lawers, I had no idea that lawerys were going to be nasty when I got into this proffesion....derp." (KMP drools and waddles her pointer finger over her lips making funny noises when she talks too)

Wow, you guys pulling out the old andogynous/power suit/feminist attacks- very smart AND original. I'm more likely to listen to the woman who works in the courthouse than the comments about how "awesome" this staircase is.

Okay, KMP ... why don't you set up a class-action lawsuit against those whose comments you don't like (or maybe against 50% of the population – that'd cover it, I'm sure)? Go ahead. We all dare you.

Getting a tad defensive about those hideous trouser-suits, aren't we ... have a few of those hanging in the wardrobe?

Who talked you into all that Voo Doo you do any way? Shaving this, painting that, stuffing "those" wearing "open" dresses, low cut blouses.
You do it ALL TO GET US TO LOOK! See through blouses, short shirts, High
Heels; Your Hair is not that Color, Your Lips and Cheeks are not that Color, you are NOT THAT TALL. Get Real! I would not humiliate my Wife or Daughter to dress up in the lies you expect from a Woman? I think it is time for Virginity Tests and HAJIB's. If you were properly clothed you wouldn't have to worry about WHETHER YOU HAD ON YOUR "Victoria"s Secret" or "Granny Panties.!" I bet its the Latter, or you would hope some one might look. You wear those "Victoria Secret Drawers" for yourself, RIGHT? Fool yourself! I AM Not! Another "SIREN" Wails her CALL! I, I, I, Me, Me, Me ! ! ! R.B.D.

A perfect solution is to frost the glass with an opaque paper on the bottom. If it's frosted, you cant see through it as well as it would be regular glass.

Seems like women who complain the most about men trying to look up their dresses tend to be those women that no one wants to look at in the first place. I think their greatest fear is walking up a glass staircase, and then realizing that no one cares enough to look.

typical when government is involved. Very poor design with no pre thought envolved, wasteful solution to the problem (taxpayers paying a cop to stand all day and warn women) typical government

In my home town library there was a fogged glass floor between the book stacks. There were cracks (necessary to the building design) between the floor and the stacks. There was a basement floor below the glass floor. The basement was the closest some boys ever got to some real book learnin.

Solution? Have a locate college's/school's/university's department of art arrange an assignment for students studying design.

    1) Paint the panels between the stairs one color;
    2) Paint the panels between the stairs multi-colors;
    3) Someone listed carpet the stairs, but that can cause accidents (sliding, etc.); and/or
    4) Apply decorative ceramic tiles on them.

Many choices ... many solutions. Good luck with whatever's chosen and have a lovely day!!

This is a 100 million + courthouse. I think the Owner, contractor and architect will worry about the stairs, but thanks for your input. Not everything is a community group issue. The community doesn't get a salaray, pay insurance or have any responsibility at all.

I'm sure a man DID design it. No man-hating, just simple fact. We have a brand new glass staircase in our office building in Oklahoma City. The women all hate it and won't use it, even though it might be quicker and more convenient. The company requires professional dress which, for women, often times is a skirt suit. It's also not a safe surface to walk on in heels – it's too slick. They didn't think it through.

All the women hate it. – Yeah i'm sure you polled all the women.

The stair surface will be made with the correct slip resistance, i'm sure it is. Again, it is probably your generalization, and your cheap shoes made in China.
