For years, women across America have dealt with glass ceilings. But now, women in Ohio have a new problem - glass floors.
A $105 million courthouse opened in Franklin County, Ohio, on Monday, but the builders seemed to have forgotten one thing - the bottom of the stairs, reports affiliate 10TV. The staircase is made of glass.
Dress wearers need to avoid taking the stairs, according to Franklin County Judge Julie Lynch, who wears dresses under her robes almost every day.
"I wear dresses because that's my personal choice," Lynch told 10TV. "When you stand under the stairwell, you can see right up through them.”
She speculates that men, who didn’t take half the population into account, designed the stairs.
Attorney Lori Johnson was startled by the transparent stairs. She worries not only about stares, but also how many cell phones have cameras attached.
“The next thing you know, you’re on the internet,” Johnson said, according to 10TV. “It sounds like a lawsuit in the making.”
While security guards warn women about taking the stairs, it seems most are just hoping people will be mature about the situation.
"They hope people will be mature? That's not a solution," Lynch said to 10TV. "If we had mature people that didn't violate the law, we wouldn't have this building."
since when does a courthouse need to be fancy? stop wasting taxpayer money, building elaborate structures with glass staircases for over $200/SF. this country has a debt to GDP ratio over 100%. we're bankrupt. and they build this? just one reason why this country's going down hill fast.
wow, i was way off...$318/SF. that price is astronomical. you can build a very nice building for half that cost. why does this country insist on spending us into oblivion? we are the poorest "rich" country in the world. time to move to Canada.
The Canadians are way worse about wasteful Bureaucratic spending. Way way worse.

Just put a name plate up calling it "The Weiner Stairway to Heaven" and all will be fine.
As for the lady's that like to wear skirts up to their crotch, "TOO BAD". Suck it up and live with it. This is no more than a liberals architectural design. This is what you've asked for.
Um, sorry to break it to you Tom but the length of a woman's skirt has little bearing on how visible her underpants are from beneath. Do you think you can see less looking up an Amish woman's skirt because it's long?
Oh just paint the stairs and be done with it! Ridiculous that this is even an issue. Say "Oops, My bad!" & then paint or carpet the stairs.
@Tom Bender, women in longer skirts are exposed too.
Stupid design...A couple of ways to fix it: Frost the stair treads and risers with an etching acid. Build an enclosure around the stairs and put up murals. The frosted treads and risers would be a more economical and elegant fix to a really bad design.
Fabulous idea!
Ummm, wear pants or wear bloomers under your dress, or let people look up your dress. I wonder if they would warn men in kilts?
*** WARNING: GLASS STAIRS ARE MADE OF A TRANSPARENT MATERIAL CALLED GLASS ***
OMG – A VIAGRA ad just appeared at the bottom of this article. LMAO. 😉 Gotta love this country.
they should just take the glass out.. no one is complaining about the staircases without risers....
LOL. Reminds me of gradeschool when I wore shorts under my dresses so that I could play on the monkey bars and just be a kid and not worry about it. But this is ridiculous, like when patent leather shoes were made illegal in some state because you could look at the reflection the shoes cast of what was above them, like dresses.
People have been peering up dresses at staircases for years. I went to Topeka High School. Built in 1928, the building was the first million dollar High School in the world. The first principal of THS was Laura L. Ewing. Lore has it that she stood at the bottom of a staircase as classes changed and looked up the girls long skirts. She was looking for red bloomers that signaled that the girl was, 'of easy virtue'. Girls wearing the outlawed color were sent home.
There is a room dedicated to her at the high school. I thought they should have dedicated the staircase. Anyway, it makes a good story.
Unless they are standing on a stair for a prolonged period of time with a flood light shining up through the stairs I doubt any camera will snap a shot of anything. Funny thing is there won't be that many women wearing skirts/dresses walking down those stairs who would warrant being photographed and those that would probably wear a thong bikini when sun bathing or swimming.
Looks like many males are going to have neck sprain!
