U.S. slaps new sanctions on Iran

The U.S. government announced Thursday that it has imposed a new round of sanctions against Iran's regime, which has come under intense criticism for its recent crackdown against pro-reform protesters.

Sanctions have been imposed against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Basij Resistance Force, and Iran's Law Enforcement Forces, according to a statement released by the State Department.

A specific individual - Law Enforcement Commander Ismail Ahmadi Moghadam - has also been targeted by the sanctions.

"While Iran's leaders hypocritically applaud protesters abroad calling for self-determination, many of Iran's own citizens - including founding members of the revolution - are being held as political prisoners merely for holding views contrary to Iran's leaders," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.

So let me get this straight, Bahrain kills protesters, has a foreign army come in, and then arrests medical staff for providing aid to the wounded and the US doesn't blink an eye. Iran cracks down on protesters and we immediately start tossing off sanctions? Real politik as usual.

I totally agree wit you,Mark. What makes me sick here is that our penitentiaries our overflowing with people who did far less than either Barack Obama or Hilary Clinton are doing to the people of Iran with these horrific economic sanctions, which I call the politics of hunger. This should be outlawed!!!

Absolutely agree – the recent we go here we ignore there foreign policy almost looks like they are throwing darts at a map. And now we apply different standards to different nations – no wonder the world hates us. The person who illuminates the entire issue the best is Noam Chomsky. Basically we want a controlled client – which is why we put up with Mubarak – and now want Gaddafi out. Our current government is not much different than it was under Bush – the term OBusha is pretty par for the course.

Because the regime in Bahrain has been generally friendly to the West, our leaders hope to acheive positive change in Bahrain through diplomacy. With Iran, however, there seems no hope of diplomatic measures having any effect, so they go directly to sanctions. It may be morally questionable, but practical.

This is perhaps the most unpopular and detested regime in mankind's history. This is also the only brutal and cowardly regime in modern times that has waged a war against the very same nation it claims to administer. The ruling hierarachy consists of "seyeds" (left over arabs who "crept" towards the Iranian Plateau since the last thousand years. As such they are NON-IRANIANS!!!). Mullah Khamenei is the self-proclaimed "Warden in chief" of the vast prison he and his predeccesor Mullah Khomeini, a person of dubious origins; a British father (Williamson) and an Indian mother from Kashmir, set up. More than half a million Iranians are rotting in the medieval dungeons built by the Islamic regime while at least a quarter million of Iranians have been sent to their death on various pretexts. The seyeds (NON IRANIANS) are the sworn enemy of the Iranian/Indo-European/Aryan nation of Iran. The word "Iran" means; "Land of the Aryans." Greek gweographers in the third century BC called the Iranians as "Persians" after the provice of Pars/Pers/Parsa/Fars. This eveil and mosntrous regime has to be eradicated and it will soon be!

Thank you,Mehr. I didn't know until now the meaning of the names of Iran and Persia. I knew already that the name of Poland, for instance, means "field people" and that of Russia means "land of the Vikings". One learns something new every day!

Mehr- I agree with you on the Iranian history. My prayer to God always is: "Let iran be hit with atomic weapons that will either exterminate the whole tongue of Iran or clippled atleast 95% of this original generation of vipers ruled by the beastly anti-Christic hell bound and sin-soaked ayetollahs.Iran is a dot hand written with a pencil on a toilet tissue paper or a letter written on the moving waters making the question of its existence is an already known answer. Why? Iran will soon be deleted by some power(s)

what a load of non-sense. Folks with the magnitude of ignorance and hate that you exhibit, should be committed.
" the most detested regime in human history", " dirty Arabs killing and raping persian people people", " let Iranj be hit with atomic weapons.........". God ! Why are folks like you running around free ?
According to top Israeli intelligence analysts, including ex-Chief of Mossad and our own Intel. Iran poses no threat to Israel & least of all to USA.
This is a trumped up threat to demonize a nation so that with Israel's boot up our behind our brave men & women are pushed into shedding their blood on Iranian sands and USA gets bogged down in yet an another quagmire after Iraq & Afghanistan.
