Gotta Watch: O.J. Simpson saga

The O.J. Simson saga was a story so riveting, it was dubbed it the crime of the century. It marked a meteoric fall from grace for a national superstar while dividing a nation among racial lines. It all began June 12, 1994, when the bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson, ex-wife of football legend O.J. Simpson, and a man named Ronald Goldman, were discovered outside her Brentwood, California, home. The nation and media became obsessed with every detail of the murders and trial. Watch how this tale of murder and celebrity became such a huge part of popular culture.

The murders - The Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were found stabbed to death outside Simpson's condo on June 12, 1994. The bloody crime scene, located in one of California's most affluent neighborhoods, and its connection to former football star O.J. Simpson, immediately put the case in the spotlight.

The infamous car chase – Californians are used to watching car chases on television. But when a former Heisman trophy winner takes police on a low-speed car chase and threatens to kill himself, even they couldn't have anticipated what would happen.

Jury finds Simpson not guilty – O.J. Simpson’s fate was must-see television. When the jury announced a verdict of not guilty, Simpson was visibly relieved. Meanwhile, viewers could hear the reaction of  the victims’ families. The moment was seared in the nation's cultrual memory.

Verdict reaction - As you'll see, reaction to the verdict was divided among racial lines.

@kelster, yeah the increase in violence couldn't have anything at all to do with the overwhelming use of steroids, and other drugs, among football players could it.

Is this when the News started getting on our nerves by talking excessively about someone we don't really want to hear about anymore?

It's when people started complaining about the endless coverage but kept watching anyway. The peak of the absurdity was also the peak of the ratings. It was very fashionable to complain about all OJ all the time, but all the people clamoring for more coverage of Bosnia seemed to have something else to do when those stories actually aired.

Wait, why it this on CNN.com 17 years later? I'm confused. Is this the History Channel?

I loved OJ. And when he was in his Bronco on LA freeways, I was actually pulling for him to get away. But it then became painfully evident that he did it. I just understand how to make any sense out of the racial division. How and why can so many black Americans support that verdict? He murdered them the system failed to convict him. Somebody please explain to me why so many blacks celebrate that failure. I just don't get it. Is it due to the fact that blacks know he killed them, but they are so frustrated with the injustice they have endured for centuries, that it is cause for celebration when a black man beats the system. I am not trying to offend anyone, but I honestly don't get it. The guy is a murderer. How can you cheer about that?

Bcuz many blacks believe O.J. did not do it. I have never heard of O.J. getting professional training in hurting anyone and whoever murdered the pair were done by experts. Y would O.J. do it anyway? O.J. could have had any woman so y would he ruin his life over one woman? Plus, I think if he had done it he would have been convicted as high profile attorneys handled the case. Moreover, the glove did not fit so they had "to acquit" or declare free of blame or guilt.

You can't even spell Simpson right. Look at the first sentence, "Simson?" Who edits this stuff! Apparently, know one.

Why is it that people with names like "Voice of Reason" and "Just the Facts" post the stupidest things?

And the reason CNN is bringing it up is because it happened 17 years ago TODAY.
    Duh!

OJ has left a real legacy. Beat a double murder rap only to get put away for armed robbery. He is a real icon of virtue for the black community. In reality, he has done more harm than good.

I am African American and I knew Simpson murdered those people. The stupid public backed him because he was the O.J. Simpson and obese middle aged Black females backed him because outwardly he was a nice young man-not knowing that this Black men despised fat Black women or any Black woman.
