Gotta Watch: O.J. Simpson saga

The O.J. Simson saga was a story so riveting, it was dubbed it the crime of the century. It marked a meteoric fall from grace for a national superstar while dividing a nation among racial lines. It all began June 12, 1994, when the bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson, ex-wife of football legend O.J. Simpson, and a man named Ronald Goldman, were discovered outside her Brentwood, California, home. The nation and media became obsessed with every detail of the murders and trial. Watch how this tale of murder and celebrity became such a huge part of popular culture.

The murders - The Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were found stabbed to death outside Simpson's condo on June 12, 1994. The bloody crime scene, located in one of California's most affluent neighborhoods, and its connection to former football star O.J. Simpson, immediately put the case in the spotlight.

The infamous car chase – Californians are used to watching car chases on television. But when a former Heisman trophy winner takes police on a low-speed car chase and threatens to kill himself, even they couldn't have anticipated what would happen.

Jury finds Simpson not guilty – O.J. Simpson’s fate was must-see television. When the jury announced a verdict of not guilty, Simpson was visibly relieved. Meanwhile, viewers could hear the reaction of  the victims’ families. The moment was seared in the nation's cultrual memory.

Verdict reaction - As you'll see, reaction to the verdict was divided among racial lines.

The not guilty verdict did split the country white and black. It's surreal how it did that. It was simular to how a white guy can be watching a boxing match between a white boxer and a black boxer. The white guy will most likely be rooting for the white fighter. While a black guy, watching the same fight, will root for the black boxer to win. Meanwhile, Chinese people in China could care less, and change the channel without watching much of the match. Racial bias is a funny thing.

And if it were a Chinese boxer fighting ANYONE other than another Chinese you'd be cheering for the Chinese fighter.
So what?! The Chinese are as racist as any other people on earth. You'll never convince me otherwise...

Echo, come on, of course, Mike Tyson is extremely popular. I am talking about the average unheard of boxers that appear on t.v. and Mike, my point is that in every race people tend to side with their own race over another race, Chinese included. Trust me, I am aware about the Chinese. I think it sucks that people are races but all I can do is shrugg my shoulders.

I wonder if this trial were to take place today, if it would have had the same outcome.

    June 12, 2011 at 7:36 pm | Report abuse |
    • Jeff

Yes, Ryan, it would have the same outcome. The blacks on the jury would never convict him for killing white people. The evidence was overwhelming as to his guilt, and he was aquitted because he is black. Anybody who says different is a buffoon. Racism is alive and well in not only whites, but blacks, mexicans, asians et al.

Ryan, if that were to happen today in this economy, with the wars taking place, with President Barack Obama in office, yes I think it would be different. Who knows how different however.

Any nation that would allow such nonsense to divide it is deserving of division. People who troll websites and espouse hateful nonsense are pathetic and are the equivalent of ignorant female dogs. If you get that last, maybe you aren't as stupid as I know you really are, Haters.

I could be wrong, but given the racial animosity that existed (perhaps still exists) in LA at the time, a "not guilty" verdict
for Simpson was inevitable because of the racial make-up of the jury. It was "payback" to whites for the brutality of the
treatment of Rodney King (and others) by the LAPD and the blatantly biased (toward blacks) judicial proceedings in cases ranging from jay-walking to murder. I am convinced Simpson was "guilty as charged" in the murders of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman...He went free because of racially motivated anger...that's just the way it is...

We "to much dumm" Americans should have tried him before some "Impartial" bunch of mullas or some gathering of Saudi
"Princes", right? Surely there'd be REAL justice there, right?? I suspect that if that had been the case we'd have seen
Nicole found guilty of slashing her own throat and then they'd publicly stone her body! Of course OJ'd get to throw the
      first rock...Idiot!

Let us not forget, that OJ was loved by more White people than Blacks. He was the all american black/white boy that many young white man wanted to be like until he killed one of their only. Black people knew then and still now that he did it, but it was their way of getting back for all the injustic that they are put thru each day on the job, in the street, etc.

So just to let you know, OJ is a white hero gone bad.

I believe this story was posted because today is the anniversary of the murders. And it DID capture a lot of attention when it happened – if you are old enough to remember this. It was on the news 24/7 for days. And remember, the families of the victims still grieve. They lost loved ones.
