Report: Drug traffickers staging gladiatorlike fights with captives

Drug traffickers in Mexico have been abducting bus passengers and forcing them to fight each other like gladiators with the winners being ordered to become assassins, a drug trafficker tells the Houston Chronicle.

The fights, initiated by members of the Zetas cartel, are called "Who's going to be the next hitman?" said the trafficker, who agreed to talk to the Chronicle on condition of anonymity.

The gladiators use machetes, hammers and sticks. "They cut guys to pieces," the paper quotes the trafficker as saying.

The winners are sent by the Zetas on suicide missions to shoot up the territory of rivals, the trafficker told the Chronicle. The losers end up in mass graves.

The trafficker said he was not a witness to the fights but gang emembers told him about them.

Federal law enforcement officials told the Chronicle they did not know of any gladiator fights, but they said the trafficker's story was plausible given the escalating violence in Mexico.

I wonder if any of the wingers here realize how retarded it is to blame Obama when citizens of another country attack other citizens of that country. Logic is clearly not a factor in their need to lash out in blind hatred against our landslide-elected President.

Excellent answer. You have to remember that these posters think that they are pretty clever to connect Obama to every bad thing in the world. They just demonstrate their anonymous hatred and stupidity

"Landslide-elected" Presidemt? I'm no "winger" or even a Repub, but even I know that 52% of the vote isn't a "landslide" – maybe you (and Adam and Lorne) should check your facts before spouting your ignorance.

Actually Morgan, you could consider it a landslide in that he was actually elected by a majority as opposed to Bush. Also despite the obvious racism, he still won. So in some ways it was a landslide.

@Jim Don't you mean he won BECAUSE of the obvious racism. I think it was reported that he got 95% of the black vote, sounds racist to me!

Hey genius, how many people who want to do drugs now, AREN'T?!
      Answer: ZERO
The DEA and ONDCP DO NOT CONTROL 'Controlled Substances,' the cartels do, just as the Mafia controlled alcohol during it's Prohibition.
Open your eyes and see the consequences of oppressive prohibition!!! The 'War on Drugs' has been lost for FORTY YEARS!! What will it take for you to open your eyes and face reality?

you think the reason people don't do drugs is because they're illegal?? what a dim view of human nature, there are plenty of people who don't do drugs *despite the FACT that they are available) or drink, I don't making drugs legal won't make more people do them but it will free up money to treat those that do and invest in public education. this is the same logic as when people say gay marriage will harm straight marriage... really, your not marrying a guy because it's illegal? how about MOST folks don't do drugs because they don't want to or know better....

The only thing worse than legal drugs is illegal drugs. The same few people will decide to get high. Making them illegal just costs us billions for police and prisons and forces users to become thieves. Nixon's "war on drugs" has proven to be a complete failure. As for workers who are high, alcohol is legal, driving or working while drunk is not. Same for drugs.

Stupid people will do drugs whether they are illegal or not. The only difference is whether they are buying them from violent criminals or a store.

We always hear the argument that everyone will use drugs if they are legal. Would you? Who here would pump themselves full of heroin right now if it was legal?

You cant legislate away stupidity. Let people make their own choices. If they want to harm themselves I dont see why its my job to stop them.

All of these drug cartels are financed by the many Americans who think their recreational drug has little
impact on the world around them and is their business alone.

Open your pathetic eyes and see some real world consequences of recreational drug use!

Sorry Brown, but you are wrong. Recreational drug use is NOT to blame. The blame lays squarely on the shoulder of those who think we can prohibit these substances, despite four DECADES of proof that we cannot.
The DEA and ONDCP are who is to blame for their own utter incompetence!!

the drug war is a carefully waged war, to maximize job security, create job growth, without ending any american lives directly. we're not trying to stop drugs from coming here. there would be wars going on inside our own country if it werent for drugs. we keep enough drugs out to say we're waging a war.

I know very little about drugs, but I do know something about people. A century ago, drugs were acceptable in society and sold in "Drug Stores" and the like. Then the criminal element became involved. If drugs are legalized, will the criminals de-criminalize? No, they will just find another way to operate. Man's inhumanity-to-man will continue.

Want to win the war on drugs and return Mexico to control of it's own land and people? Legalize drugs, and let capitalism run it's course – effectively sit back and watch the big pharmaceuticals who now have a stake in the game send their own better financed and better armed mercenaries down to wipe out the cartels. It'll be over before you know it.

If you think that we can get rid of the cartels by legalizing pot you have been using the product too long. Ending prohibition didn't eliminate the mafia. They just shifted to other businesses including illegal drugs. The Mexican cartels have tasted power and would just shift to coke, meth, crack, & heroin. It will be relatively easy to draw a significant portion of pot heads into these far more addictive drugs that clearly destroy bodies (meth) and minds (all of these.) It is a very slippery slope that we must avoid. Continue to ban all these drugs and secure our border to block the trade. Cut all trade to Mexico and electronic financial transfers to Mexico.

That is why you legalize all of them.

There are an infinite number of things which a stupid person can kill themselves with. It is beyond ridiculous to try to make them all illegal.

These criminal organizations make money from smuggling easy to produce illegal products. Legalize those products and the basic laws of capitalism will drive them out of business.

Will some of them move on to other criminal enterprises? Yes, of course. But only smuggling creates the required amount of revenue to finance these kinds of large organized groups. This is why you never see massive organized groups of bank robbers, you start spliting that kind of money a few hundred ways and its just not worth it.

And the Mexican cartels arent the only ones thriving off of smuggling illegal drugs. Many terrorist organizations around the world are supporting their operations how? Drug smuggling. Why does it make them lots of money? Because its illegal. Limited supply = increased price.

You simply have no idea what you are talking about. Pot is not a gateway drug, and what good will it do for the cartels to turn to harder drugs, if those are legal also? Controlled and regulated? Who wants to buy from some dude on the street who may just rip you off, when you can get a consistent quality product from a corner store?
As for the Mafia, they got VERY rich during Prohibition, after it, their power waned dramatically.
How many people are they killing in the streets on a daily basis anymore? How many violent crime wars are we facing right now?
      Yes, the answer is NONE.
