ATF director expected to resign amid Mexico gun controversy

The acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and firearms is expected to resign amid the ongoing controversy over the "Fast and Furious" operation, two senior federal law enforcement sources told CNN.

Straw buyers were allowed to illegally purchase large numbers of weapons in the operation, some of which ended up in the hands of cartels in Mexico.

Acting Director Kenneth Melson may resign in the next day or two, the sources said.

Attorney General Eric Holder will meet Tuesday with Andrew Traver, head of the ATF field office in Chicago about potentially serving as acting director of the ATF to replace Melson.

Border patrol agent was killed by cartel using one of these. CNN always forgets to report that.

Yet another federal agency run a muck. The problem with these all powerful agencies is they have no accountability, no monitoring of their operations, and they are allowed to operate outside of the laws and do pretty much as they deem necessary.

I agree with 'Mike O' – the purpose behind this was NOT to increase border safety – it's purpose was to justify anti – gun restrictions/ laws. This guy is a scapegoat -Eric Holder needs to resign and President Obama needs to explain to the American people why the federal government (despite local Arizona objections) was selling arms to drug cartels.

We the people shouldn't be so complacent. Get enough of us in the right place and we could protest our own government [peacefully of course 😉 ] just like the Middle Eastern countries. This is absurd, I believe in my country and my fellow people, not this brainless morons in office.

So Obama's "solution" is to install Andrew Traver, the proven anti-Second-Amendment liar that not even the Senate would confirm last time around? Wow, win-win for Obama, a hearty bird to the Senate, and American gun owners continue taking it in the pants either way. It's good to be da king.

How exactly are American gun owners taking it in the pants? No gun legislation has had any degree of presidential support during the Obama admin. The idea that the ATF would ship guns to Mexico is an effort to restrict American gun ownership is a paranoid conspiracy theory. We all ready have gun control here in America. Under the national firearms act, thousands of fully automatic weapons are in the hands of citizens and have been for decades and no government jackboots have kicked in doors trying to take them away, the only restriction on class 3 weapons was enacted by-REAGAN !!!!!

NONE OF US ARE PERFECT but.. Sad how some of the people that are intrusted in high powered jobs such as in politics take a wrong route & that's in all parties. What makes this people think they are invincible? I doubt we'll ever find a trustworthy person when GREED falls in their lap.
