If N.Y. bill passes, over 11% of Americans would be eligible for same-sex marriage

Should New York become the sixth state to grant same-sex marriage licenses, it would more than double the U.S. population eligible to enter such a union.

Five states - Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire - and the District of Columbia currently grant same-sex marriage licenses. The combined population of those states and D.C. is 15,712,015, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2010.

The New York state Senate passed the same-sex marriage bill on Friday. It will go to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his signature.

With the official U.S. population at 308,745,538, that means 5.08% of the population of America is eligible - upon meeting a state's age and other legal requirements - to marry a person of the same sex.

New York's population in the 2010 census is 19,378,102. With same-sex marriage legal in New York, that would more than double the number of people eligible to 35,090,117.

That means 11.37% of the U.S. population would then be living in a state that grants same-sex marriage licenses.

Here are the 2010 population figures for the five states and District of Columbia:

Connecticut - 3,574,097
District of Columbia - 601,723
Iowa - 3,046,355
Massachusetts - 6,547,629
New Hampshire - 1,316,470
Vermont - 625,741

Zelda, first the bible actually never mentions what the sin of sodom was! Ironically, it was most likely not being kind to strangers (like I don't know, allowing them to pursue happiness perhaps). Second, did you just really say (in a slightly different wording): "But what about the children" hahahahahahaha

Atheism is a Satanic religion of disbelief. Satan has twisted your little minds to believe that something came out of nothing and that there is no God, Satan, hell, or heaven, but, what if you small minded people are wrong? I support freedom in all aspects, including the right to marry. If you are religious, then so be it – let God judge them. Just like the womens suffrage and civil rights movements, this is about one groups freedoms being trampled by another groups beliefs.

  10. hmm?

Nobody is catering to the gay agenda. People are just becoming more educated to the human conditions of our time, whereas people claim god, specifically the christian god, to be fact when there is no concrete proof. If there a god, i cant answer. Ive never seen God. People scream in hatred of people who are different to prove to themselves that what they believe in is actually true so they can sleep at night. We can go back a few years and see how the extreme religious nuts of the time didnt want to get rid of slavery, which is ok in the bible, and how different races should not mix and reproduce. We can all see that today, this thought process is ridiculous. In 50 more years this will be no big deal, it will be just every day life. RELIGION IS PERSONAL. KEEP IT TO YOURSELF FOR GOD SAKES... or hide yourself under a rock so we can all live happily.

"American soldiers wasted their lives in fighting against tyrants and communists to preserve this perv nation?" Your arrogance and ignorance is both staggering and appalling. Thousands of the American soldiers you mentioned "wasting their lives against tyrants and communists" are gays and lesbians—good, honest soldiers who are willing to die for this country. They will soon be allowed to fully serve their country in dignity when the repeal of DADT is implemented. Do their sacrifices for our country not matter? Do their lives lost in countless wars not matter? Or is it simply because your small-minded religious beliefs cannot handle the cognitive dissonance of imaging gays and lesbians dying so you can live in a free country? And "American Christians are the only hope of the World?" Not only is this outrageously offensive to every other religion in America, it is an affront to the entire global population, Christians of other nations included. You are exactly what is wrong with religion in America today. You are so convinced of your religious superiority, you can't see that you are nothing more than a bigot of epic proportions. May God have mercy on your useless soul.
