If N.Y. bill passes, over 11% of Americans would be eligible for same-sex marriage

Should New York become the sixth state to grant same-sex marriage licenses, it would more than double the U.S. population eligible to enter such a union.

Five states - Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire - and the District of Columbia currently grant same-sex marriage licenses. The combined population of those states and D.C. is 15,712,015, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2010.

The New York state Senate passed the same-sex marriage bill on Friday. It will go to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his signature.

With the official U.S. population at 308,745,538, that means 5.08% of the population of America is eligible - upon meeting a state's age and other legal requirements - to marry a person of the same sex.

New York's population in the 2010 census is 19,378,102. With same-sex marriage legal in New York, that would more than double the number of people eligible to 35,090,117.

That means 11.37% of the U.S. population would then be living in a state that grants same-sex marriage licenses.

Here are the 2010 population figures for the five states and District of Columbia:

Connecticut - 3,574,097
District of Columbia - 601,723
Iowa - 3,046,355
Massachusetts - 6,547,629
New Hampshire - 1,316,470
Vermont - 625,741

The stupidity (not ignorance) demonstrated by religious bigots who wrote the "God" posts above is so astounding that I can barely breathe.
It is time to stop being so PC that we have to say, "I respect your religious beliefs."
    After reading the s-
hit above, I no longer respect your religious beliefs.
    I respect good humans.
The pro-God, anti-gay posts above were written by terrible humans: I respect neither them nor their imagined "God."

Lawrence v. Texas was decided 6-3 by a conservative Supreme Court. It clearly establishes the right to privacy in the bedroom between consenting adults. Therefore marriage is entirely a contract issue. Eventually the Supreme Court will rule on this disparity. Can a citizen be denied the right to enter into a contract based on orientation? The equal protection clause suggests that you can not deny them this right. If the Supreme Court does rule that this is acceptable it places at risk all contracts of any type based on orientation. The Supreme Court will never allow the financial damage this will cause. Ultimately it is pro-business.

Lenny, I see your point, but marriage is not only a contract between two people. It is a contract between those 2 people, and Uncle Sam. I'm not taking a side, but privacy in a bedroom is not the same as right to marry – big flaw in your argument. It can be argued that the two aren't even in the same stratosphere.

It's a good point. However the supreme court can decide that marriage is not a standard contract (like parent and his child is not a standard contract).

Maybe but there is no precedent for it that has withstood the test of time. It would jeopardize all judicial precedent based on the principle of stare decisis. I don't think the court will do that.

@PallasAthene @Josh Wow, now prove yourselfs back if you can stop this idiotic paradox. I only mentioned the 'prove' argument because the majority of atheists argue with this idiotic issue of evidence, which no one has and no one will, so the idea of evidence is even on both sides ONLY FOR THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE. God made things this way because the physical universe is NOT His priority, only the spiritual universe is, so nice try 🙂

Me, you're too dumb to attempt to argue. One cannot prove a negative. You cannot prove that Santa Claus doesn't exist. The onus is on you to prove that your god is real. Now go look up the word 'onun' and the word "prove".

@tommas Religion is not God. God (as the majority of people define) is the name given to the only almighty silent force that makes existence possible, while religion is a set of indoctrinated rules based on a certain belief or book which very much lacks of true FAITH in God, get your facts straight 🙂

Just give everyone the same common law rights. Take the religious aspect out of it, and go further, abolish divorce. So tired of listening to these whiny double-standard hypocrites babble on about this. Its not the destruction of society, its just the evolution.

You know that, in the animal kingdom, it is very common for a certain percentage of animals in a species to be "gay", right.

For all our lofty goals and aspirations, humans are just highly-evolved primates.... animals, really. Why should gay/straight statistics be any different for the human animal than for others?

  6. hmm?

Hmm.. how about this? On a exponential scale... the more education a person has, the person will have a steady increase in humanitarian causes and a strong decrease in religious beliefs without fact. Most ignorance comes from poor uneducated families who have nothing to lean their believes on except what was shoved down their own throats when they were born.

So go do something else with your time. No one is forcing you to accept my opinions. Just like no one is forcing me to write them. I am doing this because I want to. You are writing what you want as well. My question is, do you really think I care what you care about? I think you do think I care. and the truth is I do. because I don't.

Being gay is like government corruption. People are okay with it until the day they point the cross hair at you and ruin everything you hold dear to you. You have the choice then to join them, or resist. Most are too weak to resist, so they create delusions that justify their weakness, thus making it even more difficult for those who resisted. And each ignorant action complies on top of the next one, until satan finally creates his master delusion. then the mark of the beast will be offered, and the wide gates to hell will be opened. Many of you who have just read these words, will either accept this mark, or you yourselves will accept it. Jesus said the majority are going to take the wide gate to hell and eternal damnation. You've been warned.

The desperation is strong with this one.

Face it. This is another reminder that the grip of fear you once held on humanity is weakening. You cannot control us anymore, and it scares you. How does it feel, to fear for once, instead of being feared?

Personally I have no interest in marrying someone of the same gender, but if that were my inclination, I would want the same rights as people who marry someone of the opposite gender. Keep your religion in churches and stop using it to prevent equal rights for others.

Right, because the earth needs another billion folks, I mean we do so well with taking care of the entire earths population now. No one goes hungry or is abused or any nonsense like that. We have endless resources on earth and should fill every available inch of inhabitable space with human beings.

    You are also a bigot.

Not everyone shares the same belief system and unless it directly effects you, what any consenting adultn "chooses" to do is none of your business.
