If N.Y. bill passes, over 11% of Americans would be eligible for same-sex marriage

Should New York become the sixth state to grant same-sex marriage licenses, it would more than double the U.S. population eligible to enter such a union.

Five states - Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire - and the District of Columbia currently grant same-sex marriage licenses. The combined population of those states and D.C. is 15,712,015, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2010.

The New York state Senate passed the same-sex marriage bill on Friday. It will go to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his signature.

With the official U.S. population at 308,745,538, that means 5.08% of the population of America is eligible - upon meeting a state's age and other legal requirements - to marry a person of the same sex.

New York's population in the 2010 census is 19,378,102. With same-sex marriage legal in New York, that would more than double the number of people eligible to 35,090,117.

That means 11.37% of the U.S. population would then be living in a state that grants same-sex marriage licenses.

Here are the 2010 population figures for the five states and District of Columbia:

Connecticut - 3,574,097
District of Columbia - 601,723
Iowa - 3,046,355
Massachusetts - 6,547,629
New Hampshire - 1,316,470
Vermont - 625,741

If your argument with me is something about "God," then you have no argument.
    "God" is nothing.
    "Allah" is nothing.

Then explain the causality of this universe with absolute physical and scientific evidence which science requieres, and THEN you will have a REAL argument, moron.

ME, absence of evidence is not evidence for its absence. No one gets to make up anything else without any evidence. It is ok to not know, that is the state of our reality at the moment.

Oh Franklin, you disappoint me. By your twisted logic, since being gay is a choice, then you decide every day to be straight? At what point after waking every day, do you ask yourself: Should I be gay today? The reason they might be ashamed is because they were brought up in a religious family who believes being gay is morally wrong, according to their RELIGION. Please do yourself a favor and google bonobos. You can lead a man to knowledge, but you cannot make him think. A pity that enlightening yourself won't change your small little mind.

You write this as though people haven't thought about their stance on gay marriage in depth for years. Either way I think your argument is very weak. Most gay people I know are very happy with their life.

Some of the latest research says the puritans didn't leave because they were persecuted for their beliefs. They were kicked out because the were persecuting everyone else. Kinda like the tea party.

You have a lot of hatred in your heart, and if there is a god, he probably feels sorry for you. I bet you have never even met a gay person in your life.

Release your hatred and bigotry and embrace modern times. Gays are here to stay, whether you like it or not, so you may as well like it and stop stressing/hating.

Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. One is born gay, it's not a choice. Trust me, if it was a choice why would someone subject themselves to constant ridicules by right wing idiots like yourself. Every day I listen to some religous nut or right wing politician who throw religion in our face. But you know, we're all children of God, and God doesn't make mistakes. It's time the religious right learned the meaning of God and the Bible if they want to use it a tool for hate.

If they knew the Bible and the real word of God then they wouldn't be hateful at all. That's the sad irony about this whole debate.

I've been saying that for a long time. Why is it that these so-called "Christians" that tout love thy neighbor and god all the time usually tend to be the most hateful people you'd ever meet?

You use your religious argument to make a case.? Not all people get married and produce children. What do you do with hose people who cannot have children?. The same apply to gay couple. Tehy may want or not want children and it is non of anyone business. You want 1000 kids? Go ahead. But don't tell others they should/should not have children.

What about straight (one man one woman) families where the woman cannot physically bare children?!?!?!?! Or single parents who become single due to divorce or death in the family?! Stop being ignorant...you're probably some crazy Christian and that's why your opinions are twisted...think about it this way...marriages are performed in churches, then why aren't divorces also performed in a church?!?!?!

Why is it ridiculous for my gay and lesbian friends to have the same rights that my husband and I enjoy? Why is it ridiculous for these couples, some of whom have been together for over 30 years, to wish to be recognized as the family they are. Why is it ridiculous? You say it is because they cannot have kids? Silly man, I can't have kids....should I have been barred from getting married? Besides, you are overlooking the fact that gay and lesbian couples ARE having children and doing and amazing job raising them. Is it ridiculous for them to wish to legitimize their children? Quite frankly, I think your argument is ridiculous.

How is the number of children they plan to have related to whether or not they can get married? Wait... tell me you didn't get married just to have kids, did you?... I think you have some issues you need to look into immediately!

your so ignorant Josh, if the whole world was populated with men without women you all will die of aids and you poor gays would not be able to populate since guys or gays can not have babies together. Stupid it takes a man and a women. You gays will all die off. But gays are all worried about the intimidate of pleasure with their distorted brains are wracked out.

And if azzholes could fly, you'd be searching for a landing strip, pauline. The percentage of people who are gay has remained relatively the same. The world ISN'T populated solely by one gender. Nor are gays sterile. They have biological children all the time. Humans aren't an endangered species and no one who marries is required to have children.

      4. – just stop because you're not making sense.
