If N.Y. bill passes, over 11% of Americans would be eligible for same-sex marriage

Should New York become the sixth state to grant same-sex marriage licenses, it would more than double the U.S. population eligible to enter such a union.

Five states - Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire - and the District of Columbia currently grant same-sex marriage licenses. The combined population of those states and D.C. is 15,712,015, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2010.

The New York state Senate passed the same-sex marriage bill on Friday. It will go to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his signature.

With the official U.S. population at 308,745,538, that means 5.08% of the population of America is eligible - upon meeting a state's age and other legal requirements - to marry a person of the same sex.

New York's population in the 2010 census isΒ 19,378,102. With same-sex marriage legal in New York, that would more than double the number of people eligible to 35,090,117.

That means 11.37% of the U.S. population would then be living in a state that grants same-sex marriage licenses.

Here are the 2010 population figures for the five states and District of Columbia:

Connecticut - 3,574,097
District of Columbia - 601,723
Iowa - 3,046,355
Massachusetts - 6,547,629
New Hampshire - 1,316,470
Vermont - 625,741

Faisal, you're living proof of PallasAthene's posted quote. You simply don't understand the difference between ignorance and stupidity.

Of course, you're probably both stupid and ignorant; they do co-exist. Just look at HeIsGod and ZelDUH for examples.

    There is no Levantine God.
    No Allah.
    No Jesus.
The Bible is a crock about something that does not exist.

Riddle me this. Name me one culture that has developed that ever defined marriage as anything other then a man and women. Marriage is really meant for procreation, not as a affirmation of "love", or whatever definition they are trying to create.

I think its true, if it was natural for a man to be with another man then why can they not have babies together? And If it was so natural like a man & women to marry why do some don't except gay marriage? Why are we so divided on this? Its because man was born to take care of women and not men take care of men since they are the masculine one. If some men were born to be gay i would say its a defect. If its natural then men should be able to have babies with each other like men and women do. Not by operation. Men who lie with men must be lacking something in their brain. If there is a creator then wouldn't you think he would have been capable of letting two men have babies together? THINK ABOUT IT!!! And if you believe in evolution then your stupid to think we are still evolving, evolving into stupidity.

It really boggles the mind that gays wanting to get married is the problem to the "religious". Getting married multiple times isn't a problem. Sleeping with everyone except your spouse isn't a problem, getting married on a whim isn't a problem. At least it isn't a problem as long as it's a man and a woman getting married. 6 out of 10 "traditional " marriages end up in divorce court, and "till death do us part" is a joke, but yeah, gays and lesbians marrying is the problem...

Take a look at Canada. Have the gay marriage damaged their Straight People lives? Have gay marriage stopped people from having children? Take your religious belief away and let all people live in equal rights society.

Using evidence to support one's view of reality has left the building for many of these people a long time ago. Reality is a scary place that many would rather hide behind mythology.
