Russian jet crash kills 44, authorities say

[Updated at 9:12 p.m. ET] At least 44 people died as a result of a Russian jetliner's crash onto a highway outside Petrozavodsk in northwestern Russia late Monday, emergency management officials said.

The jet had 43 passengers and a crew of nine when it took off Monday night from Moscow for Petrozavodsk, about 950 kilometers (600 miles) to the north, Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said.

Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said survivors, including one child, were taken to hospitals.

Controllers lost contact with the twin-engine Tupolev-134 at about 11:40 p.m. (3:40 p.m. ET), and it crashed onto a highway outside Besovets, near the Petrozavodsk airport, the ministry reported. Andrianova said the jet broke into several pieces and caught fire after the crash, and that nearly 140 rescue workers, doctors and police officers were on the scene.

I've flown on a number of Russian airliner types, including those little Tu-134s. They always seemed well-built to me, and the cabin staff was a lot friendlier than what you get on Delta, anyway. Why, one time a member of the flight crew came back and opened one of the doors to let the kerosene fumes in the cabin dissipate for a half hour or so before takeoff. You can't get any more considerate than that, can you, lol!

Friendly cabin staff on a Russian jet liner? You must have really been hitting the vodkas, my friend. I've flow Aeroflot a good couple of times and being served meant being made to feel that you were being done a favour. Ask for a 2nd cup of tea and get a nasty look from an air hostess who acts like she'd rather be sticking needles in her eyes than in a plane full of "villagers."

Russia may not make things pretty but they do make things that WORK. The AK-47 for example, or the Soyuz that still brings people to space while we retire our shuttles.

40 people die, and your first response is to insult and blame someone? Let me give you some advice, 40 people died today. 40 families lost a brother or a sister or a mother or a father or a baby... you are so vindictive, so vengeful so ready to strike when tradgedy strikes... doesnt that bother you? Don't you see how that is inappropriate? Who taught you to think that way?

Aeroflot is the one airline I never got to fly on, Big Al. Sibir, Krasair, yes. Maybe that was the difference, I don't know. But it was quite pleasant, and so was the food.

Fact: the Tu-134 has a better safety record than the DC-9s Delta uses.

In Federal Russia, safety record mocks YOU.
