Westboro Baptist Church plans to protest Dunn's funeral

A controversial church in Topeka, Kansas, plans to send parishioners to Pennsylvania to protest the funeral of “Jackass” star Ryan Dunn, the congregation announced in a press release.

Westboro Baptist Church "will picket any public memorial/funeral held for Dunn, warning all not to make a mock of sin, & to fear and obey God!” the release said.

Westboro was started by the Rev. Fred Phelps in 1955. The church's parishioners, made up mostly of Phelps relatives, stage protests with signs that say such things as "God Hates Fags" and "Thank God for dead soldiers."

The funeral director for DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home in West Chester said Wednesday afternoon that a family-only private memorial for Dunn was in progress - and there was no problem.

Because it was a private memorial, Joseph DellaVecchia said, he didn't expect any disturbances, although he'd heard of Westboro's plans.

“We can’t stop someone from coming to a public funeral, but this is private, and the police have everything under control,” DellaVecchia said.

A public funeral is planned for later in the week.

“Our department recognizes that we have an ethical and legal imperative to uphold civil rights of those who choose to lawfully assemble to protest but also of family members mourning at a funeral," West Chester Police Chief Scott Bohn said Wednesday.

Dunn was drunk and driving up to 140 mph when his 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 crashed and caught fire on a Pennsylvania highway Monday, police said Wednesday.

The red-bearded Dunn, 34, was famous for his pranks and dangerous stunts on the MTV show, which evolved into a successful film franchise.

Westboro protesters, known for picketing the funerals of U.S. soldiers, have recently been met with counter-protesters at funerals across the nation.

At Arlington National Cemetery in Washington last month, counter-protesters, some claiming to be from the Ku Klux Klan, squared off against Westboro Baptist members.

I guess WBC ran out of dead soldiers. They have been taking fewer and fewer trips to picket funerals. Can we hope they are going bankrupt?

Why can't WBC do something more productive, like, I don't know, protest the Church of Scientology?

Really? The Westboro idiots are going to try protesting? These are not the type of guys you want to be mad at you, considering all of the pranks they have done.

I hope nothing happens, though... it's a sad ending for a person who had a great future ahead of him.... at the very least, he had a fun life with the Jack*ss crew.

The way I see it, someone died, someone wants to bury that person in peace. End of story.

  7. Big Deal..

Bow to the "Leper Messiah".. that is exactly what these bigots learned from the Bible, to be compassionate by disrupting other's funerals.. I believe in God, I believe the ten commandments and a good conscience covers what God wants from us, not to follow these hypocrites..

well of course. westboro members are perfect. they've never sinned and are perfectly capable of judging others. hell, they're better than jesus - he was never good enough to taunt someone at their own funeral.

WBC is basically a club for the mentally ill. I'm not joking. This is a group of mentally damaged people who gravitate towards each other to justify their hatred. It's a real shame they use Christianity to justify their venom towards humanity. Jesus came with a message of universal acceptance, peace and love. These idiots are not even smart enough to read their own rule book. They pick verses out of random books in the Bible to justify anything. Do the world a favour and check yourselves into a mental hospital.

Actually it's mostly just one inbred family with 3 houses and a big yard. Because of US laws they can call themselves a church. All they have to do is act all crazy here and there, and they never have to pay taxes. It's all a tax evasion scam, and because it makes for good headlines the news people are willing to call them a church.

Again the media just uses this "Good Christian" group to try to make us regret we have free speech.

They should call them for what they are; Lawyers looking to SUE people. Every punch/brick even verbal abuse they take who did it to court, abusing the letter of our legal system. That seems to be how they raise revenue.
