Other shocking court verdicts

Casey Anthony's acquittal on first-degree murder charges may be one of the most surprising trial outcomes in at least a decade. The Florida mom may have escaped with only misdemeanor convictions, but her acquittal is drawing comparisons to another high-profile murder trial: O.J. Simpson's.

O.J. Simpson escapes murder conviction – Police suspected Simpson murdered Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in June 1994. The case dominated headlines and was must-see television. Between Simpson's infamous low-speed car chase, the trial's intriguing cast and a dream team full of legal heavyweights, the former NFL superstar was able to avoid conviction. O.J. showed signs of relief and joy when he learned his fate.

Outside the courtroom tensions arose. Some cheered "The Juice's" acquittal while others were stunned and suspected his fame and fortune allowed him to get away with murder.

Jury acquits Robert Blake – "Baretta" helped make Robert Blake a star, but it was a murder accusation that launched him into the headlines again. Blake was accused of killing his wife, Bonny Lee Bakely, in 2001. Blake always maintained his innocence and, in 2005, a jury agreed, finding the actor not guilty of murder. When the jury announced the verdict, Blake began sobbing.

Rodney King verdict sparks riots – Los Angeles already was rife with racial tension before the Rodney King incident. But the allegations of excessive force by white police officers were caught on tape. That had many thinking they'd never be acquitted. Jurors surprised the city and the nation by acquitting all but one of the officers. The verdict proved to be the spark that ignited a powder keg of strained racial relations. Riots broke out in the city's most urban areas and even the president had to get involved.

Fans rally behind Michael Jackson – Child molestation allegations again surrounded Michael Jackson in 2005, resulting in a criminal trial. While some were surprised the King of Pop was found not guilty, his enthusiastic fans never doubted his innocence. They rallied behind him, cheering his victory. One person even released a white dove for each not guilty verdict.

This was not a shocking verdict. There was no evidence. The only thing they proved was that Caylee died.

Agree 100%. Nothing shocking at all - nothing was proven, Now, Caylee is sadly dead but how is really anyone's guess. That being said, the mom should have been convicted of child endangerment or neglect or something along those lines but with three years served already, maybe that is what those charges would have yield sentence-wise anyway.

There was just as little evidence in the Scott Peterson case.

Cletus, You are correct. One problem with our system (supposedly best in the world) is 12 different jurors could have given her a death sentence. They don't always get it right. Not saying they did or didn't get it right this time, but we have to live with their verdict. At least if your wrongly convicted, there is an appeal process. But that doesn't always work either. Best just not to ever kill anyone, and stay away from those that do!

Although I agree there isn't enough evidence
to convict Casey of murder, there is plenty of evidence to suggest she was a bad mother capable of murder. The fact that she lied to investigators is enough for obstruction of justice. There is also plenty of evidence that she handled the body after death which means one of three things: she is guilty of child endangerment leading to death, she murdered her child, or is an accessory to murder. Though there isn't enough evidence to convict of murder, there is more than enough to stop her getting off completely clean.

CAN SOMEONE CIVILLY SUE TOT MOM?

Ricker – I was wondering that too – her parents? I surely hope they don't – as they are certainly not "innocent" of knowledge of what happened. What about the father of Caylee? Was that ever established? That's the problem with this whole case – too many unanswered questions to a horrible, horrible death.

Yes, they can sue tot mom. In fact, the fake nanny is already lined up to do so.

Who knows what happened? I still think she was guilty; however I wasn't in the courtroom to hear first hand evidence. The jury must have heard something I didn't. We will never what happened. A child is still dead and apparently noone will pay a price for her death. Where is the justice in the world?

first,of all i do believe the jury was fair. there was no evidence at all because the body was in the woods for so long. you have to be proven guilty. i do believe casey was responsible for caylees murder but you cant convict everyone without evidence. she just got lucky and got away with murder. but i believe she shoul have gotten a manslughter conviction. that little girl died and someone is responsible.. In this case noone is held responsible. so i assume it will be all forgotten. Also there are rumors that casey will get millions for movie and interview deals. This is so horrific., to be able to profit from a little girls death. The media is evil. I cant believe that they glamorize the killers. amd abusers in this country and treat them like moviestars and give them millions of dollars and its said that tere is not enought money to insure everyone but there is lots and lots of money to give to these pathetic sociopaths who all they have to do is kill someone, cover it up and get out of jail free and make millions and be glamorized. Nice society isnt it. They need to work like everyone else and they absolutely dont deserve a penny from anyone. So thats telling us if you can get away with murder you will definately be rich and famous. Thanks to the media.

Common sense tells us that Casey is responsible for Caylee's death. The jury, unlike the Peterson jury did not show they had common sense. That said, if Cindy and George think the verdict was "fair" KNOWING that Casey somehow killed their beautiful

There is no justice in the world. I have traveled this planet twice, and still have yet to find justice, only laws. I remember the case, as do many of you, and the jury has spoken, and that is it..She will not be tried twice for it, just see what happens if she should have another child, and hopefully she will not...now that was cruel Yannaes.

No shock here at all. I paid no attention to this 'drama'. I did however listen to the summation by the prosecution and said to my wife immediately thereafter, there is no way a jury can find her guilty. The verdict is only a shock to those who bow at the altar of TV / Internet Gossip. Nancy Grace and her ilk banged the drum for three years so that anyone who listened to them became convinced without 'hearing' the evidence. It is no shock to me; no way the case was proven. Not even close.

I did the same. I didnt watch any of the entertainment news until after closing arguements. Maybe thats why some of us can understand the verdict. Are minds were clear to comprehend the facts.

From all the evidence entered, there are many variables as to what could have actually taken place. But the majority of people have made up their mind from watching junk news like Nancy Grace.

You cant blame the media for her making money off of this. All they do is write the story. Her making money depends on how many people are willing to watch the crap they come up with. The media are only doing their jobs.

The Anthony's raised Casey and she is a result of their upbringing. Lie and cheat and children learn to lie and cheat. The whole family is so screwed up it resulted in an innocent baby dead in a swamp. Accident or intentional, it should never have happened. We probably will never know the truth. Everyone should look around at their own lives, raise your kids with morals, give them hugs, and forget about the screwed up Anthony family. Life goes on ( except for poor little Cayley).

@Allan – You are correct, the Anthony's created that monster. They share part of the blame for Caylee's death and they are paying for it. Their own child (Casey) destroyed their life now, they have to pay the consequences of being irresponsible parents.
