News of the World shutting down after Sunday edition

[Updated at 12:00 p.m.] The scandal-hit British tabloid News of the World will shut down after Sunday's issue, its owner, News International, told CNN Thursday.

All revenue for Sunday's final edition of the scandal-hit tabloid the News of the World will go to good causes, News Corp. executive James Murdoch said Thursday in announcing the closure of the 168-year-old newspaper.

Journalists at News of the World, a tabloid that is the world's top-selling English-language newspaper, have been accused of hacking into the mobile phone account of missing British teenager Milly Dowler, intercepting messages in search of news.

They then allegedly deleted messages to keep her mailbox from filling up, giving her family and friends false hope that the schoolgirl - later found murdered - was still alive.

Police also are investigating suggestions the paper - known for its exposes of celebrities and politicians - may have targeted the relatives of other high profile crime victims, including at least one of those killed in the 2005 London bombings.

The news comes after the officer leading the investigation said they have identified nearly 4,000 potential victims of illegal eavesdropping by a private investigator working for the tabloid.

The illegal eavesdropping by Britain's scandal-hit News of the World tabloid "sullied" the newspaper and "has no place in our company," News International chairman James Murdoch said Thursday.

Wow I think it was because they were out of money not really the scandal but they're most likely going to make another tabloid under a different name with a few other changes

Allan you're another example of an irresponsibly misinformed conservative. Liberal media? I guess if you listen to a lie long enough you can start to believe anything. The NOTW is owned by Rupert Murdoch, who also owns FAUX news and is the poster child for the conservative media propoganda movement.

Shutting down the paper seems like a stunt to deflect attention and blame. I'll bet the paper will be reincarnated as "News of Our World" or "The Tabloid Formerly Known as News of the World" or some such thing within a few days. Murdoch isn't letting a profit-center like News of the World go to waste.

Word is now that the shameless piece of trash The Sun will simply move to 7 days a week to fill the gap. Nice little switch by Murdoch. I hope people don't buy this name change and this has no impact on the legal proceedings, but it will probably work.

  8. There is ...

.. an example of what a free people can do. Stupid Americans are in thrall to Fox News. Useless idiots.

    • Only a useless idiot ...

would assume that Americans are a people in thrall to Fox news, or any other partisan news source. Not everyone is a follower of Fox, and not everyone believes in everything they read, see, and hear on TV/Internet, etc as the gospel. You are clearly as idiotic and narrow minded as those who you accuse. By the same assumption, I suppose you and yours can be found in the first chapter of the Book of British Smiles.

Regarding the story, what this agency has done is shameful. I do hope that there is some closure for the families who have been made victim of this agencies greedy actions.

You must not be very familiar at all with the US. The majority of us consider Fox News a joke -and this is a registered Republican saying this. Unfortunately, those that do keep up with Fox News tend to be a bit fanatical. Please don't think all Americans are stupid and gullible just because of a few ignorant posts!

What is wrong with some of you people? Fox news did not do it. Murdoch did not do it. Fire & jail those that broke the law. Instead many on here are happy that a paper with 168 history and thousands and thousands of jobs are going to be lost, all for a few individuals that recently broke the law. This world has gone r-tarded. More education obviously is not working. When you all are paying there unemployment for the next 2 yrs, I hope you are happy but then again I don’t think anyone can add 1+1 anymore.

It is not a joyous thing that the paper is shutting down. This does say what happens
when the fourth estate is basically owned by one power mad individual.

Murdoch is doing this to cover his backside. He and his son are the only two people who were over
the person who ran the paper during all the hacking. Murdoch knew everything. I believe the scandal
is bigger and crossed the pond. This is a torch the building type of move so no one discovers more bodies.

This smacks of a bad movie plot. One where the crimal mastermind kills off the hired assasin to cover their own involvement in a heinous murder. The Murdoch's are neck deep in unethical behavior and poor journalism.

Oh and the rest of the media wears such a bright halo. They can do no wrong, They are all out for the buck anyway they can get it and when one goes down they pounce like cannabals.

That still does not absolve them of their crimes. The perpetrators belong in prison, and the victims need to be justly compensated. They should be at the top of the list of "worthy causes".

    Let's get one thing clear:

We're all idiots. No one in this thread is any better. In fact, I assume most of you were linked here from other sites, most of which are as completely (IF NOT MORE) full of crap than News of the World.

Americans aren't bigger idiots than the british, british people aren't dumber than Americans. Both cultures consume so much drivel and gossip that comparing the two is akin to saying Nagasaki was worse than Hiroshima. All countries with media of this scale are guilty of being shallow idiots. That is one thing I think we should be able to agree on:

The british are as shallow as the americans, the americans are as shallow as the british, and every other country is just as bad.

NO ONE IS BETTER. ALL ARE WORSE. It wasn't the BRITISH who cast off the chains of servitude to News of the World, it was the BRITISH who made it the #1 selling english language paper in the world. Don't congratulate yourselves for putting out a fire YOU STARTED, and don't make it worse by trying to make yourself feel better by blaming the Americans.

I don't believe all british people read this paper, or the entire british empire would have collapsed by now (that was a joke, your'e already as irrelevant as my home country, Canada). I don't believe America only watches Fox news (WE'RE READING THIS ON CNN). I don't believe any of us are more guilty than the other. We're all guilty of letting this happen, and no amount of internet rage will convince me that we all don't secretly enjoy it. I do. You do. We all do.

Stop pretending that you're a better, separate species of human than the rest of us. The people who committed this crime are criminals. Do you blame every single bureaucrat and streetsweeper for war crimes? No, you blame the people responsible.

The reporters. The PI. They deserve to be prosecuted, don't tar and feather an already hilariously stupid publication with the same pitch and birds. There's a difference between stupid and malicious. Some people are both. Some people are just one. Don't assume everyone is evil, because in the end, they could just be very stupid.

the voice in your head you ignored before making your post
