News of the World shutting down after Sunday edition

[Updated at 12:00 p.m.] The scandal-hit British tabloid News of the World will shut down after Sunday's issue, its owner, News International, told CNN Thursday.

All revenue for Sunday's final edition of the scandal-hit tabloid the News of the World will go to good causes, News Corp. executive James Murdoch said Thursday in announcing the closure of the 168-year-old newspaper.

Journalists at News of the World, a tabloid that is the world's top-selling English-language newspaper, have been accused of hacking into the mobile phone account of missing British teenager Milly Dowler, intercepting messages in search of news.

They then allegedly deleted messages to keep her mailbox from filling up, giving her family and friends false hope that the schoolgirl - later found murdered - was still alive.

Police also are investigating suggestions the paper - known for its exposes of celebrities and politicians - may have targeted the relatives of other high profile crime victims, including at least one of those killed in the 2005 London bombings.

The news comes after the officer leading the investigation said they have identified nearly 4,000 potential victims of illegal eavesdropping by a private investigator working for the tabloid.

The illegal eavesdropping by Britain's scandal-hit News of the World tabloid "sullied" the newspaper and "has no place in our company," News International chairman James Murdoch said Thursday.

Amy – so MSNBC and CNN don't spin to make ratings? I'm a moderate and in this day and age it's almost impossible to get news that isn't slanted one way or another. What a tool.

CNN is accused of being "left-wing" by morons like you, even though it's heavily pro-corporate, pro-zionist, and pro-Wall Street. The only media that's even marginally "liberal" is NPR - everything else is Corporate Billionaire propaganda.

It's tough to sue a business for civil damages when it's closed. Murdoch knows how big this scandal is and is shuttering his business for his own protection and giving everyone an opportunity to destroy evidence in the process.

2012 is the year of reckoning. Conservatives will win, because you're weak cowards who don't have the spine to fight for what you believe in.

    LOL @ Liberalism

Catering to everyone's baser instincts, this cesspool of 'journalism' comes to a fitting end. One of Murdoch's better decisions.

I wonder why ultra nationalist like conservatives and Tbaggers worship FauxNews god Murdock, a foreigner who interest is to make money off uninformed, uneducated people by throwing red meat after red meat they want. I am sure he is 100% behind all the dirty tricks to monopolize the news, or more correctly fake news.

We could only hope The Propaganda Network would fall but I am sure they will continue on for a bit longer. They are number one source for the uninformed.

If this activity was happening in the UK, one has to wonder if some shady activity also occurred in the U.S. I hope it's being checked into - maybe there can now be some accountability/justice for the shady org. known as Fox.

Fox News will be alive and well for some time. The reason? They dont do any investigative reporting no matter how unethical. They just offer punditry and telling viewers what they want to hear.

News means nothing. It will just be reopened under a different name. May be like "News of the conservative world", for example.

How ironic that Fox News has written almost nothing at all about this story. News International think they can close one paper down and expect everyone to be happy now..... Until news international is broken up, and Fox and Wall Street Journal amd The Times and The Sun and Sky is sold off, this will keep happening.
