News of the World shutting down after Sunday edition

[Updated at 12:00 p.m.] The scandal-hit British tabloid News of the World will shut down after Sunday's issue, its owner, News International, told CNN Thursday.

All revenue for Sunday's final edition of the scandal-hit tabloid the News of the World will go to good causes, News Corp. executive James Murdoch said Thursday in announcing the closure of the 168-year-old newspaper.

Journalists at News of the World, a tabloid that is the world's top-selling English-language newspaper, have been accused of hacking into the mobile phone account of missing British teenager Milly Dowler, intercepting messages in search of news.

They then allegedly deleted messages to keep her mailbox from filling up, giving her family and friends false hope that the schoolgirl - later found murdered - was still alive.

Police also are investigating suggestions the paper - known for its exposes of celebrities and politicians - may have targeted the relatives of other high profile crime victims, including at least one of those killed in the 2005 London bombings.

The news comes after the officer leading the investigation said they have identified nearly 4,000 potential victims of illegal eavesdropping by a private investigator working for the tabloid.

The illegal eavesdropping by Britain's scandal-hit News of the World tabloid "sullied" the newspaper and "has no place in our company," News International chairman James Murdoch said Thursday.

We all know this is a cynical and devious attempt to either scuttle the investigation or any lawsuits by making this organization "non-existent" right? Right?

BTW – the word journalist should never be used in the same sentence as the word tabloid. It only makes people laugh and roll their eyes.

Can they please PLEASE do that with Fox?? Start investigating them. This behavior is probably rampant in the US.

This isn't a liberal vs. conservative issue as some are making. News of the World is not the first news outfit to do this. They are likely the first to be caught. What they did is terrible but I'm surprised Murdoch is going as far as to shut the entire thing down. Wouldn't one just punish/fire the people involved. Perhaps this really does go all the way to the top and shutting it down is the only way to handle this.

At least the UK has some credibility when it comes to enforcing broadcast laws. Our FCC has been sold out. They only care about boobs not slander.

Glad to see this slim peddler go down. These people have no sense of decency and they are surely not a legitimate news organization. Wondering if Murdock is doing the same kind of thing in the US.

News International is trying to buy the last remaining independent parts of the UK's satellite broadcaster BSkyB. Ofcom (the UK communications regulatory body) can veto such a purchase if the purchaser is not a 'fit and proper person' to run such a company. Someone who owns a newspaper implicated in illegally tapping phones is not considered to be a 'fit and proper person'. The consulting period ends tomorrow.

Is this 'people power in action?' is it the Dirty Digger suddenly growing a moral backbone? Or is it a power-crazed antipodean octogenarian with a Napoleon complex sacrificing one of his armies so that he can win a far bigger battle?

The china wife, Wendy Murdoch, according to rumors, is worst. She's cunning and manipulative and always gets what she wants, that's how she got the old guy to hook up with her and divorced his long time wife.

He should be liable. I am sure he knew about it. if they could find something to link regardless of this move he should be held accountable.

I guess it is an honorable and noble position from the owner.

However, the REAL CRIMINAL HERE is the public desire to consume gossip. So, if there is a buyer, someone WILL put the product in the market; so the king is dead, long live the king.

Anything goes, Rupe? lol, I hope you rot in Hell. AND get to spend eternity with Bill O'Reilly and Shepard Smith. What comes around goes around, you rich dirtbag. lol
