Ohio State vacates 2010 wins, puts self on probation

The Ohio State University announced Friday it is vacating all 12 of its victories from the 2010 football season and placing itself on two years' probation in the wake of a scandal that cost coach Jim Tressel his job.

Tressel resigned under pressure after it was revealed he had lied to National Collegiate Athletic Association officials investigating allegations that Ohio State players had received special benefits from local businesses in Columbus, Ohio.

Several players, including star quarterback Terrelle Pryor, allegedly swapped team and personal memorabilia and equipment for tattoos and other benefits. Tressel became aware of the transactions, which violate NCAA rules, but did not report them on a form all coaches are required to submit.

Five players were suspended for the first five games of the upcoming season.

"We are fully cooperating with the NCAA, and we look forward to working together to bring a resolution to these current matters," Athletics Director Gene Smith said in a written statement.

The self-imposed sanctions are contained in the university's formal response to the NCAA's Notice of Allegations received April 21. The NCAA could impose its own punishment, which could be more severe.

Tressel and the university also announced they had agreed to recharacterize his departure as a retirement rather than a resignation.

"I take full responsibility for my mistakes that have led to the ongoing NCAA inquiry and to scrutiny and criticism of the football program," Tressel said in the university's press release. "I am grateful for this opportunity to retire from the university that I so deeply respect and that I will continue to support."

I agree with Stan. These players generate millions of dollars for their schools but aren't allowed to pocket a penny. They get there college paid for, which is nice, but its miniscule in comparison to the amount of money they generate for their schools. Maybe re-working the NCAA would force more players to consider staying in college longer to finish their degree. Because i think for most, if the option is there to go make millions on an NFL contract...or stay here and not be allowed to get ANY money....its a no brainer. @SoCalDave..... great idea.....except not at all.

Check out the South Park episode "Crack Baby Basketball." It makes it pretty clear what the producers think of the NCAA and it's treatment of the student-atheltes.

Nice to claim these teams bring in money for these schools. Except the money that goes to athletics STAYS in athletics. Meanwhile I'm stuck teaching math to your students in a 100 year old building in need of repair. But hey, we can use a new stadium.

All of us are to blame: schools give kids scholarships to go to school and play sports, but for some universities, educating these kids is hardly a top priority. Winning bowl games or tournaments is. The same goes for alumni & fans, who pay large cable bills to watch games & pay for tickets. Until we change our ways- and put education first- these scandals will continue.

Money has corrupted college sports, which in turn has corrupted the universities that field teams. This is mostly true of football and basketball, but other sports are not immune. The attempt to prevent athletes from getting help under the table is a complete failure. Graduation rates for football and basketball players is a disgrace. The athletes themselves are exploited for their athletic ability and then abandoned when injured or their eligibility runs out. Coach's salaries are obscene. But like the war on drugs, another complete failure, there is too much money going to too many influential people for there to be significant change.

What about the kids that did the right thing? The guys that worked hard for the wins last year? What happens to them? All their work in the garbage for a few greedy players. Man, some of the big linemen should have a private "chat" with those guys.

vacating? really? vacating after the fact? is that their answer to save face? here a better one. how bout they lower their budget on the football program. its the only reason why they have been so dominate. they should denounce the big ten and be independent. but thats a dream. i vacate my statement.

The coaches get paid; the trainers get paid; the schools make millions; but a couple of free tatoos for a poor kid and he's history. The plantation lives.

Ohio State has always been one small step away from the NCAA death penalty, always walking a narrow line. Maybe this action will force them to finally wake up and start playing fair.

How is it that OSU hasn't been playing fair? What happened has nothing to do with the way Ohio State plays.. The skills of the the players cannot be justified by the actions of a coach or how a University handles issues. These players worked hard to get where they are, and what they do on the field shows that.

I'm with thebourneblogger. Vacating wins is the ultimate insult from OSU. It goes way beyond a meaningless gesture. It's sort of like OSU giving us the finger as it drives by in its crimson and grey Rolls Royce on the way to deposit all the game proceeds in the bank. Hey, Buckeye Administrators, let's try a real apology – like not fielding a football team in 2011 and 2012. Then we might think you're sincere.
