Ohio State vacates 2010 wins, puts self on probation

The Ohio State University announced Friday it is vacating all 12 of its victories from the 2010 football season and placing itself on two years' probation in the wake of a scandal that cost coach Jim Tressel his job.

Tressel resigned under pressure after it was revealed he had lied to National Collegiate Athletic Association officials investigating allegations that Ohio State players had received special benefits from local businesses in Columbus, Ohio.

Several players, including star quarterback Terrelle Pryor, allegedly swapped team and personal memorabilia and equipment for tattoos and other benefits. Tressel became aware of the transactions, which violate NCAA rules, but did not report them on a form all coaches are required to submit.

Five players were suspended for the first five games of the upcoming season.

"We are fully cooperating with the NCAA, and we look forward to working together to bring a resolution to these current matters," Athletics Director Gene Smith said in a written statement.

The self-imposed sanctions are contained in the university's formal response to the NCAA's Notice of Allegations received April 21. The NCAA could impose its own punishment, which could be more severe.

Tressel and the university also announced they had agreed to recharacterize his departure as a retirement rather than a resignation.

"I take full responsibility for my mistakes that have led to the ongoing NCAA inquiry and to scrutiny and criticism of the football program," Tressel said in the university's press release. "I am grateful for this opportunity to retire from the university that I so deeply respect and that I will continue to support."

Smith and Gee should go as well. They knew student athletes were driving around in expensive cars and eating at expensive restaurants. Other student athletes in different sports and OSU employees knew it as well so if those two claim innocence, they are LYING!

I'd go after Tressel to recoup the millions he was paid and the NCAA should grant any of the football players their unconditional release from their scholarships so they can find another program to play for without sitting out a year. Once again, so many are victimized by the behavior of just a few!

Wait a minute... No being banned from bowls?? No loss of scholarships??? Why is this fiasco so different from the USC Reggie Bush episode?? I'd like to see these folks hit in the wallets! Not the schools, but the agents who pull a lot of this crap and try to keep it under the radar. Agents found guilty of rules violations cannot be a representative for any athlete in any pro sport.
Essentially this will kill the career of agents breaking the rules.

It pains me to see the kids that don't break the rules have to deal with the punishment after the fact!

I wonder if all this that is going on with Ohio State and the self imposed sanctions and vacating of wins has anything to do with the AD wanting to get the head job with the NCAA. Wasn't he going to some kinda NCAA or Big Ten conference the day all these stories broke? Maybe he is trying to look good so that he can get the big job. Just a thought.

Still not good enough. Reminds me when Tressel was only going to get 2 Game Suspension. Make them give the money back they got from the Sugar Bowl and give it to Charity. Since they pulled strings to get the 5 Players available for Sugar Bowl and lied to the NCAA multiple times.

All about bucks. The NCAA is as corrupt as Ohio State. How about $2M salary for the NCAA president. It is a game of bucks. Make it professional and call it what it is, minor league for the NFL.

Interesting that you refer to Tressell as a "legend" right in the same league as Woody Hayes who also "resigned" in shame after punching out a player from Clemson when the Bucknuts were getting their backsides handed to them. HAHA classic typical bucknut behavior, don't man up to any responsiblity. Instead, make it an "us against them" situation and then divert to how great you are going to do this season. Classic misdirection, haha good luck bucknut!!

We win BCS bowl games and DON'T break the rules. Who should be allowed to play for the national championship?

This is a cakewalk compared with what the NCAA is going to do. I'm a diehard OSU football fan, and even I think they should be heavily sanctioned. The program was out of control, and OSU fans were blindsided. Let the chips fall where they may.

I really dont see why it is so unethical, who cares if the boys wanna trade their stuff, why can't they receive gifts? It's not like the gifts make them play better or worse..I think it's silly, it's not like they are running for some governemnt office or getting paid off to vote on something that affects the people in general..they are just getting paid off to go on some big team later on or for some fanatic to "know" them..-_- Quit fighting over small stuff
