Overheard on CNN.com: When is it OK to go big and bad?

Mmm … more big, bad breakfast, please.

Kate Krader, Food & Wine's restaurant editor, says more and more chefs are including breakfast on their menus. And while breakfast sandwiches aren’t always the most nutritious, Krader dishes on some of the most interesting, creative and decadent “Homer- Simpson-of-A.M.-food” that chefs are concocting (but not necessarily serving in their restaurants).

Some CNN.com readers had a difficult time getting into the spirit of the big, bad breakfast sandwich, while other readers said people need to lighten up once in a while and indulge.

sleepingdogg said, “No wonder so many Americans are fat. They [the sandwiches] all sound gross.” MMMMMM, Donuts said, “Heart attack on a plate: The breakfast of champions.” Matt said, “I think this type of food is worse than any issues we have in our country related to gun violence, smoking, murders etc. This food is killing everyone, not just a specific race or culture. It is poison to everyone's bodies.”

Rachel said, “No wonder the scales are tipping in the USA! Not one of these is healthy eating. One of my favorite breakfasts is a piece of whole wheat bread [toasted], a teaspoon of natural, unsweetened peanut butter spread so it melts on the toast then add a teaspoon of jam. It's delicious, fast, nutritious, and it doesn't need to be deep fried!” Crashley responded, “This is your favorite? So out of ALLLL the other things to eat for breakfast this is your top pick? How boring ...” PithyMcGee said, “Obviously this article isn't about the healthiest breakfast sandwich. Get a clue health nut.”

RichardHead said, “I'm going with the Tim Love sandwich; In Texas, Go BIG or go home.” VinoBianco responded, “I think that sandwich may define what's wrong with this country.” But EmptySkull said, “There's nothing wrong with the sandwich. You don't get heart attacks from eating it once in a while, you get poor health from eating it every day. It's not a problem with the food but a problem with the person's eating habits.” Kitkat said, “I think all sorts of over-the-top dishes are defining large waistlines! I cringe at some of the piles of ingredients. GLUTTONY!!”

Shane said, “Would all of you sad, little people complaining about how unhealthy this is and how bad a heart attach it will give you [stop]? The title of the article is ‘BIG, BAD BREAKFAST SANDWICHES not ‘the just enough to get you by breakfast.’ Stop the complaining about how fat America is on this thread, because this isn't an article about that. Trust me, I'm pretty sure most of the country knows it's fat.”

Mildred said, “I've never tried a fried PB&J. ..."  RichardHead said, “@Mildred I had this at the Texas State Fair a couple years ago. He uses grape jelly and also throws in bananas, then deep fries it, sprinkles on confectioners sugar. It tastes fantastic.” JC-VA said, “OK, stop, you are making me drool. ...” Ms. Grammar said, “I've never tried deep frying it. I usually do it like a grilled cheese, but with PB and honey on cinnamon-raisin bread. Here's the really weird part; I LOVVEEE it with a big tall glass of ice cold V8. I know, right?”

Taylor HAM said, “How about a Taylor Ham, Irish Sausage, Fried Egg, Salt, Pepper, Ketchup, Hot Sauce, on a 12 inch wedge, and don't forget the Hash browns. It all goes down with two ice cold Nesquick chocolate milks.” Jersey By Nature responded, “YES!! Taylor Ham is the best breakfast meat. It is hard to find outside of Jersey, but Taylor ham, egg and cheese on English muffin is my Sunday religion.”

Hasher Iva said, “A good buttermilk biscuit like grandma used to make, a thick slice of ham and a chunk of cheddar cheese. Breakfast doesn't get any better.” Fred responded, “Your grandmother used to make them ... before she had a coronary. ...” Txarcher said, “Fred: my grandfather ate fried eggs, bacon, buttermilk biscuits, ham (all kinds of pork), smoked UN-filtered camels for over 40 years, drank moonshine whiskey, and chased women a lot, AND lived to be 93. I'll take some of that !! Life is a once-thru journey, no do-overs permitted. Enjoy.”

Reporting gun sales

The federal government said Monday it is proceeding with a plan to require gun dealers in four Southwest border states - California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas - to report the sales of high-power rifles under certain conditions in an effort to stem the flow of guns to Mexican drug cartels. But gun advocates say it’s an illegal expansion of gun control, and the National Rifle Association says it will sue to stop the plan.

So what did CNN.com readers think of the government’s move and the NRA’s response?

USA401 said, “I think everyone missed the point. Nobody is giving up rights here. No guns are banned. There is nothing wrong with gathering information on people so they can better track gun sales and prevent people from purchasing hundreds of guns then selling them to Mexico.”

RobertOKUSA said, “I'm in favor of the constitutional ‘right to bear arms,’ but blocking common sense restrictions like these is a big reason why many people dislike the NRA.”

TheMovieFan said, “The NRA is so screwy I'm surprised that they aren't for guns in vending machines.” scuba31 responded, “The liberals are so screwy I'm surprised they don't make a constitutional amendment banning weapons and declaring that war can only be fought with flowers ... lots and lots of flowers ...” LiamP said, “You're both being ridiculous. First off, most guns wouldn't fit through the little door at the bottom of a vending machine. And second, I'll have you know that there are some very pointy flowers that have thorns and stuff which could cause a pretty nasty scratch.”

Displacedmic said, “Ah yes, the ‘if you have nothing to hide, why do you care if we look’ defense. So funny how the ‘left’ was up in arms over Bush's egregious assaults on liberty when he used that defense to justify things like listening in on your phone calls and tossing you in jail without charges. He argued that it was to protect you also. Tell me, what's the difference?”

Things not to say to kids

Saying things like: “Hurry up!” “Great job!” “You know better than that!” are just three of the nine things Paula Spencer from Parenting.com says you shouldn’t say to your child. But what did CNN.com readers think of her advice?

Meggie24 said, “Entire generations were raised with these phrases and not only did we not all turn out to be serial killers, we also didn't grow up with a huge sense of entitlement and lack of social empathy that, unfortunately, seems to be pretty prevalent in today's kids.”

NateEngle said, “Parents don't need to be perfect, though a lot of the points of this article were good ones. It's fair to let kids know that society has rules, and it's only as long as we abide by those rules that we're entitled to the same civility in return.”

startwreck said, “Yes, yes. Great advice ... and then there's the REAL world outside the Disney parks and Pixar movies.”

itsallgood70 said, “I told my girls ‘hurry up’ all the time when they were young. Now that they are grown, guess what? They turned out to be - punctual adults!”

Meggie24 said, “Some fantastic phrases my parents used include: ‘suck it up, buttercup,’ ‘well whoever said life was fair?,’ ‘because I said so, that's why,’ ‘I'm not running a restaurant - you'll eat what's put in front of you.’ We also heard, ‘well done,’ ‘you did your best and that's the most important thing,’ ‘we love you.’ I'm sure lots of these things wouldn't make the author's ‘ok to say’ list; but most parents say these things, or some variation, and we all turned into stable, well-adjusted, responsible and caring adults.”

    When I quit smoking over 3 years ago, I gained 70#'s.
    I'm seriously thinking of diet and exercising about 50#'s off.
    Now I'm supposed to entertain the idea of delibratly clogging my arteries?
    Take a hike !

      No diet: smaller portions, naked juice in the mornings, and just walk for 45-60min a day at a pace you would walk inside a bldg...you will be fine, Jeff!

    Without sunlight and live-green vegetables, it's impossible for the human body to rid itself of excess fat and toxins. Surely you've noticed that obese people don't like vegetables, and they're mostly all pastey white from lack of sunshine. (your body actually produces a chemical using UV light and chlorophyl. This process is the only one known to science and medicine that can actually "scrub" cells clean of excess fat and toxins. But they can't make any money from it so they sell you diet pills and yo-yo diets. Lotsa money spent on those two phony programs. We still have a growing obesity epidemic, but at least there's money to be made off of it) Besides. Obese people just born that way...or so they say.

    There is something to be said for increasing one's caloric intake to combat obesity. It takes a lot of energy (aka calories) for your body to produce fat-scrubbing chemicals. And since the human body uses about 80%of it's entire energy just digesting food, any reduction in the remaining 20% would be foolish. Eating foods that are easy to digest frees-up needed energy for fighting obesity. It is impossible for any human to thouroughly digest red-meat and dairy products, though we waste countless calories trying. Calories are your friend, not your enemy. And you'll be needing a bunch of them if you are to ever to return to your natural weight.

    I think there is a corolation of bad diet & medical necessity in this country. It seems the medical society profits from people having diet related complications. I don't think they want people to get well & stay well because theres no profit in that. The powers that be would much rather we continue our bad habits & take all the meds they throw at us, which at this point is also a lucrative "illegal drug" commerce. Medicine has always been a "tribal" effort & holistic, homeopathic, methods are the precursors to todays medicine. Thats why we can often get the same or better results from those methods. Good health is up to the individual, not some doctor or "health plan". I mean that helps too, but we can't just blindly accept a diagnosis & the meds that go along! !

    Not every day, mind you; just once in a while.

      @queen: me, too, but i can only get it once a week.. Along with toast with peanut butter – someone else mentioned that earlier. I stay away from the wheat bread, though.. My mama wouldn't lead me wrong...

    When I want to lose weight:
    Breakfast: Two boiled eggs. Black coffee.
    Lunch: Small can of tuna.
    Dinner: Anything I want, but no dessert or alcohol.
    On weeks when I can get to the gym five to seven times, I can eat more and still lose weight.
    I once lost weight very quickly doing 95 minutes on a stationary bike every day, plus another gym visit for a workout with weights: every day till the mirror is happy with you.
