Births, not immigration, account for most of Hispanic growth in last decade

Births have overtaken immigration as the driving force behind the growth of the Mexican-American population in the United States in the past decade, according to a report released Thursday by the Pew Hispanic Center.

The same can be said for the entire Hispanic population of the United States, which grew from 35.3 million in 2000 to 50.5 million in 2010, accounting for 16.3% of the U.S. population, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. About 58% of that growth resulted from births rather than the arrival of new immigrants, the report says.

The trend is most evident among Mexican-Americans, whose numbers grew by 7.2 million as a result of births and 4.2 million from new immigrant arrivals in the past decade, reversing trends from the previous two decades, when the number of new immigrants matched or exceeded the number of births, the report says.

Mexican-Americans are the nation's largest Hispanic group,  at around 31.8 million, or 63% of the U.S. Hispanic population and 10% of the total U.S. population.

In the Pew report, the term Mexican-American applies to people of Mexican origin, regardless of immigration status. The study noted that in 2010, 52% of people of Mexican origin were in the U.S. illegally, and that 68% of births to undocumented aliens were to Mexican nationals.

What's behind the change?

Mexican-Americans are more likely than U.S.-born Americans to be in their prime child-bearing years, and they also have higher fertility rates, the report says. Another significant factor is a steep decline in Mexican immigration to the United States in recent years.

Hispanic births accounted for 25% of the nation’s newborns in 2008, the report says, citing statistics from the Centers for Disease Control. U.S. births are also disproportionately Mexican-American. While 10% of the nation’s population in 2008 was Mexican-American, 16% of the nation’s births were to Mexican-American mothers.

White children in the minority in 10 states

Meanwhile, the number of new immigrants arriving from Mexico fell by 60% between 2006 and 2010 because of declining job opportunities in the U.S., increased border enforcement and economic growth in Mexico, the report says, citing a previous Pew Hispanic Center study of Mexican immigration trends.

Age and fertility explain the high share of births among Mexican-Americans, the report says. On average, Mexican-Americans are younger than other major racial and ethnic groups, with a median age of 25, compared with 30 for non-Mexican-origin Hispanics and 41 for whites.

Mexican-American women also have more children than their counterparts in other racial and Hispanic origin groups. The typical Mexican-American woman between 40 and 44 has given birth to 2.5 children, compared with 2.3 children for the typical same-aged Hispanic woman and 1.8 children for the typical same-aged white woman, according to Pew Hispanic Center tabulations from the 2006 to 2010 June Fertility Supplements of the U.S. Current Population Survey.

The Hispanic share of the population is projected to rise from 16.3% in 2010 to 29% by the middle of this century, with the bulk of the future increase driven by births rather than the arrival of new immigrants, the report says.

Make them support them and pay for everything like the rest of us and the birth rampage will stop.

This is certainly evidenced by the fact that every Mexican female I see on the streets, that is of child bearing years, is pushing a stroller full of babies with two or three more in tow. A big part of the problem is that cancerous Catholic mentality whereby contraception is taboo. Get a clue and put a cover on it people!

I was with this patient, and she calls me "muchacha" means housekeeper. Ha Ha Ha. People, I may be cleaning my patient, I love it. Cleaning a patient with my 4 year BSN nursing I don't mind doing pt. care. It's a job. But, a tactless, illiterate like most of you who could not even speak the English language even basic. Parasite. And boys if they think you're a single parent they would try to woo you. They knew. What? You cannot afford to pay my bills. You just need a green card. You need a class act. Parasite. Too dependent with Uncle Sam. Uncle is broke.

I think muchacha just means girl, now if she's specifically calling you chacha then she's calling you a maid.

Just an FYI Visnumaya, muchacha doesn't mean housekeeper, it means young lady. If anything they were using it as a term of endearment, so don't go and get your panties in a bunch.

Excuse me – in this particular case you are the tactless and illiterate; for one, muchacha does not mean housekeeper, it refers to young girl/lady. The translation of housekeeper is "ama de llaves." For someone who flaunts having a 4 year BSN nursing degree you are pretty ignorant. I don't know from what hole you came out of – but, please go back to it.

Unfortunately, 'visnumaya' "muchacha" does not mean housekeeper. Congratulations on your BSN but you should probably be working on becoming a little more culturally competent especially if you intend on working in the medical field. Apparently Uncle Sam is paying the wrong person's salary. SMH.

I do not understand why Americans give preference to illegal latrine cleaners from latin America – latinos – when there are millions of English speaking, highly skilled, LEGAL Indians waiting patiently for visa.

Considering that India has 13x more people than mexico, it is clear this is anti-Indian racism!!!

Why should MEXICO get immigration priority over highly skilled Indians???

    NOT FAIR!!!!!!

You are extremely racist by saying you're so sick of the latinos. How would you feel if people said that about indians. I'm friends with indians and a lot of them come to this country and get an amazing education only to go back to their native india and use all the SKILLS and EDUCATION they learned here to make india better. Instead these hispanic people come looking to make their lives better and actually try to stay here forever because going back home is worse. You might be here to stay but many indians do go back, now that is NOT FAIR, they should contribute to USA, not go back.

The problem is that too many Hispanics that were "born here in the USA" still have more loyalty to Mexico, to which they have never been, than they do to the United States. You need to choose your loyalty.

Man, we really should have just taken Mexico all together when we won the Mexican-American war. Most Americans don't know this, because they are stupid, but we occupied Mexico City when we forced the Mexicans to sell us the Southwest for a "fair" price.

    1) We should have just outright taken it. We won fair and square!
    2) We should have just told the Mexicans they lost and we're taking your sorry country and making it better by being part of America.

There's nothing wrong with Mexicans themselves. They're just byproducts of a pitiful country that doesn't care about them and they're trying to find solace here in America. Now, though, America is too PC to correct our ongoing problems. We're too busy making cupcakes out of our kids by patting them on head telling them everything will be okay.

This high fertility will keep Hispanics poor - too many kids to give them any advantages or attention. The poverty cycle established by poor blacks is continuing with Hispanics.

Look they do it on purpose. They do they come here and know that if they get pregnant on American soil the baby is a citizen. They use it for security to scream human rights, that way they can't be deported. They do it for benefits that they get for the legal citizen the baby. And the politicians that you keep voting in are letting them so why get p*ssed.

Once the anchor baby is born here, unfortunately that baby is automatically considered Mexican-American. You showed your bias with your last line. Please, please go back to Mexico, and take your pack of Americans-by-default with you.

Come on guys, read the actual article before thoughtless immigrant-bashing. The article says the average birth rate for Mexican-American women (many of whom are Americans, and should not be subject to immigrant-bashing, as the researchers don't differentiate based on immigrant status) is 2.5 versus 1.8 for white American women. Sure that is higher, but not that much. And we white American wome are not reproducing enough to replace ourselves. So would you rather have an aging and decreasing-population country of white Americans? I'm not sure that that is in the best interests of our nation.
