Births, not immigration, account for most of Hispanic growth in last decade

Births have overtaken immigration as the driving force behind the growth of the Mexican-American population in the United States in the past decade, according to a report released Thursday by the Pew Hispanic Center.

The same can be said for the entire Hispanic population of the United States, which grew from 35.3 million in 2000 to 50.5 million in 2010, accounting for 16.3% of the U.S. population, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. About 58% of that growth resulted from births rather than the arrival of new immigrants, the report says.

The trend is most evident among Mexican-Americans, whose numbers grew by 7.2 million as a result of births and 4.2 million from new immigrant arrivals in the past decade, reversing trends from the previous two decades, when the number of new immigrants matched or exceeded the number of births, the report says.

Mexican-Americans are the nation's largest Hispanic group,  at around 31.8 million, or 63% of the U.S. Hispanic population and 10% of the total U.S. population.

In the Pew report, the term Mexican-American applies to people of Mexican origin, regardless of immigration status. The study noted that in 2010, 52% of people of Mexican origin were in the U.S. illegally, and that 68% of births to undocumented aliens were to Mexican nationals.

What's behind the change?

Mexican-Americans are more likely than U.S.-born Americans to be in their prime child-bearing years, and they also have higher fertility rates, the report says. Another significant factor is a steep decline in Mexican immigration to the United States in recent years.

Hispanic births accounted for 25% of the nation’s newborns in 2008, the report says, citing statistics from the Centers for Disease Control. U.S. births are also disproportionately Mexican-American. While 10% of the nation’s population in 2008 was Mexican-American, 16% of the nation’s births were to Mexican-American mothers.

White children in the minority in 10 states

Meanwhile, the number of new immigrants arriving from Mexico fell by 60% between 2006 and 2010 because of declining job opportunities in the U.S., increased border enforcement and economic growth in Mexico, the report says, citing a previous Pew Hispanic Center study of Mexican immigration trends.

Age and fertility explain the high share of births among Mexican-Americans, the report says. On average, Mexican-Americans are younger than other major racial and ethnic groups, with a median age of 25, compared with 30 for non-Mexican-origin Hispanics and 41 for whites.

Mexican-American women also have more children than their counterparts in other racial and Hispanic origin groups. The typical Mexican-American woman between 40 and 44 has given birth to 2.5 children, compared with 2.3 children for the typical same-aged Hispanic woman and 1.8 children for the typical same-aged white woman, according to Pew Hispanic Center tabulations from the 2006 to 2010 June Fertility Supplements of the U.S. Current Population Survey.

The Hispanic share of the population is projected to rise from 16.3% in 2010 to 29% by the middle of this century, with the bulk of the future increase driven by births rather than the arrival of new immigrants, the report says.

Got to hand it to the Mexicans. They are going to take down the world's super power without firing a single shot. 200 years from now you won't even recognize this place, hell some parts of California are tough to distinguish from Mexico already. If I were Canada I'd start building the fence right now. If your politicans move at the same speed ours do, it should be done just in time.

Another term is ethnic cleansing and it is not just whites. "Latino" gangs literally drove a bunch of black people out of their neighborhoods in a California town. Celebrate the diversity.

These are exciting times. Death of a Nation. Just look around. Loaded with obese, lazy fools of all races, religions and creeds. The government is beyond hope. The system is irreversibly broken. I am a once-patriotic Veteran, that no longer even celebrates the 4th of July. Take control of your finances, relieve the IRS of their illegal involvement in your life, and enjoy the wealth and happiness, like I do. Oh, and sit back and watch the news with glee.

There is no such thing as an "Hispanic-birth". All births on U.S. are American births. I don't understand why the need to group people into their land of origin, its like old-school segregation mentality. We are all Americans, the only difference is who is legal here and who is not.

I think any mesican that comes to the US illegally should be caught and sterilized. Kids too. They are human parasites and need to be treated as such. The US is not a host, you fools.

The sad fact of the matter is that Mexicans want to be here, because their country sucks. Their country sucks, because they have lacked the intelligence and ingenuity to manage a nation for thousands of years. Moving here is not a brain transplant. It won't fix stupid. So, you will just take another country down with you. Personally, I think we will fix the problem before long, with the government's help or not.

My question is, why do Mexicans living in the U.S. show so much Mexican pride? Yet they've flocked the heck out of Mexico as fast as their speedy little legs can carry them.

I am not surprised. Do you see how many taco bells are in the U.S.. I love the food, a shame that every taco or burrito sold goes straight into the pockets of Mexico as they have the royalties on burritos as well as grade f meats.

I am sick and tired of everytime I go on my computer I find another story about the Mexicans. Do we not have any stories left to tell about us White American Legal Citizens? The Mexicans are multiplying so that in years to come they can put a Mexican in the White House Presidentcy position. Wake up White Americans! Do you want your grandchildren working for the Mexicans and getting paid minimum wage at best. Our future generations will be out in the tomato patch picking veggies while the Mexicans run this country.

These so-called Mexican babies ARE NOT legal American citizens. Just because you are born over here, your parents are creeps, drug pushers, river crossers, does not mean you have any rights. If you don't believe me, read the 14th Amendment in its entirety. It was written for the children of the black slaves back in the 1800s so that after the Civil War was over, the blacks and their off-springs could become American citizens here. It was not written for the immigrants from the countries to the south. This shows how igornant our people are in Washington, the Mexicans from the south are, the American legal citizens here in the United States also are. Stand up, legal American citizens. Fight for what is yours and mine. Do not back down to the illegals from Mexico. Stop the freebies that bring them here. We are the ones that make it easy for them to stay here. Stand up and fight them. Help the Governors of the States that are trying to get rid of these breeding, bunny hopping human beings who are bringing illnesses and other travisties to America that will destory all of us, if we let them. Stand up and fight for our country. This is OUR COUNTRY, not theirs. Make them unwanted here, stop all sources of freebies and aid to them, let them know they need to go home. They PAY NO TAXES to the United States. Start contacting your Congressman/woman, See that ALL ASSISTANCE is immediately stopped to these interlopers who are not wanted here in our Country before it is too late.

I have been reading your comments before and since I posted mine. DO NOT turn against each other. That is what the illegal immigrants want us to do! Stick together and raise enough of a stink with our State Governors, Congressman, and our fine lobbyists up in Washington to let them know they "can be replaced." We are going to have to start picking and choosing better who we vote in to Washington, D.C.

And to you, the responder who said you have a Mexican Governor. I know who you are talking about, and even she is trying to get rid of the illegals, backing laws that she is trying to help get passed that will stop the Mexicans from staying in her state, stopping the illegals period from coming there.

If the illegals are caught by the border patrol, the ICE, or by the cool sheriff in Arizona, then instead of us tax payers paying the deportation charges, I have an idea. Take every one of the caught Mexicans who are coming across into our country, take them to the nearest Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine incruitment offices, "make" them sign the papers to join up, ship their rear-ends off to camp, if they try to leave, either shoot them for desertion, or put them in the stockade for a very long time. As far as their family members, put the women in the same place, have a bus waiting at the border crossings, put the kids in them (does not matter the kids ages if under 18) and ship them back down to grandpa/ma or whomever is back there waiting for our money to be shipped over to them to live happily ever after. They can have the pleasure of raising their grandchildren on their own, while papa and mama, is in the military, serving for the good of OUR COUNTRY, that they wanted to live in so bad.

So minimum wage is acceptable for "others," but not for white Americans? While I believe in legality, I also believe in civil rights. Your racism is disgusting.
