On the Radar: Deficit talks, Betty Ford funeral, Clemens trial, South Sudan, golf

Deficit talks - A fourth straight day of talks intended to head off a possible government default ended on a tense note Wednesday, with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor saying President Barack Obama cut him off by saying, "I'll see you tomorrow," before walking out. The exchange concluded almost two hours of talks that failed to achieve a breakthrough. Another session - the fifth in five days - was set for Thursday, participants said.

Betty Ford funeral - After a public viewing at the Gerald R. Ford Museum, a procession will travel to Grace Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where a national tribute service will be held for former first lady Betty Ford. Lynne Cheney is expected to give the eulogy. In attendance will be former President Bill Clinton, former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld (who also served in the Ford administration). After the church service, the family will return to the grounds of the museum, also in Grand Rapids, where the private interment will take place.

Roger Clemens trial - Prosecutors in Roger Clemens' perjury trial are wasting no time telling the jury what they plan to show them. During opening statements, Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Durham said the prosecution plans to introduce physical evidence in the form of needles and used cotton swabs - items they say contain the former baseball star's DNA as well as residue from anabolic steroids.

Clemens is facing charges of perjury, making false statements and obstruction of Congress about his alleged use of steroids and human growth hormone. The former all-star pitcher testified under oath before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in 2008 that he never used illegal performance-enhancing substances during his career.

New U.N. member - South Sudan becomes the 193rd member of the United Nations on Thursday. Its flag is expected to be hoisted after a vote in the U.N. General Assembly.

British Open - The 140th Open Championship, or simply The Open, is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf. It is the only "major" held outside the United States. This year it returns to Royal St. George's Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent.

I'm a little bothered this morning. Every day I visit cnn.com to get news updates. I cannot believe that the horrific story of the little boy kidnapped & killed in New York isn't on the front page. If I missed it, it must've been overlooked because of another Casey Anthony picture/story, or a lady that hacked of her husbands p*nis. Come on.

President Obama needs to hang tough. Don't play House and Senate games. Our country needs to be shocked back to reality. Eliminate – large corporate Tax loop-holes, no more handouts to anti American countries, get ALL Americans out of Arab Countries so fast it knocks those little militant buggers on their butts, cut back on welfare benefits and limit welfare benefits only to American Citizens.

If we hadn't sent our soldiers to Arab countries in the first place, we would'nt be in this mess today.
Trillions of dollars of national treasure wasted & counting, thousands of American soldiers killed, tens of thousands of innocent civilians dead & dying. This nation up to its neck in debt & teetering on the brink of bankruptcy to stand with Ireland, Greece , Italy & the like.
Trillions being spent on Homeland security & spying on American citizens
Recall our forces from those far off lands where they do not belong. Eliminate the 700 military bases we maintain around the world & spend billions in upkeep. Stop the billions in aid every year to Israel & Egypt, the money is needed at home. We the tax payers can no longer afford the dole outs.
get serious about resolving festering issues like the Palestine-Israel conflict, find political solutions to the disasters l;ike Iraq, Afghanistan & Libya. Forget getting militarily involved in Syria & Iran.
Boot out all foreign lobbies operating on US soil, give the boot to those up on the Hill who while eating off of this land swear allegiance to foreign nations. Let them migrate to the country they stand for. Plug tax loop holes for the profiteering corporations & ultra rich.
Get the focus back to Infrastructure, education, health care, immigration , crime, drug cartels , law enforcement & other myriad problems plaguing this nation.
Rid our socio-political thought process of hate, fear & racism. Get those spewing hatred, twisted idelogy & intolearance off the scene by ignoring them.
If we do not do all of this then prepare to forget the way of life we as Americans have known & be prepared to stand with the third world countries.

The government should set aside 1 percent of all federal taxes and give to me to invest in the economy and help stimulate it. I would buy stuff to increase other folks income.

The Tea Party reminds me of Sheriff Bart proclaiming "Nobody move or the (n-word) gets it!" while holding a gun to his own head. The Dems remind me of the guy who says "Nobody move, he means it!".

I also think REpublican Eric Cantor should reprive himself from talks because he can prosper by delaying any resolution to the debt crisis. He has shares in his portfolio that have gone up 3.3% last week if the debt ceiling is not raised and the our debt becomes less desireable. He is also the Congressman who walked out on the talks. Anyone know if the quarter is over before the Aug. 2 deadline? This was reported in the Washington Monthly.

I hear Standard and Poor's is joining Moody's in placing U.S. in review for the debt. Ironic given the big banks involvement in this mess. Taxpayers bail out the big banks now facing higher interest rates from the same big banks?
