U.S. warships arrive in Vietnam

Three U.S. Navy ships arrived Friday - as welcome guests - at the Vietnamese port of Da Nang.

The visit is part of a seven-day celebration of the 16th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two former enemies, the Navy said in a press release.

The 7th Fleet delegation consists of the guided-missile destroyers USS Chung-Hoon and USS Preble, the rescue and salvage ship USNS Safeguard, additional sailors from the Logistics Group Western Pacific command, and a mobile diving and salvage team.

The Safeguard underwent repairs at a Vietnamese shipyard in 2009, the Navy said.

Territorial tensions have risen in recent weeks between Vietnam and China over the South China Sea, but the U.S. says the visit is a planned training mission focusing on "non-combatant events and skills exchanges in areas such as navigation and maintenance."

U.S. Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen just ended a four-day visit to China on Wednesday.

So the US loses 50k+ casualties and restores relations with Vietnam within 20 years....US loses it last casualty in Cuba when the USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor in 1898...but still wont talk to them.

So you'd rather still be at war with Vietnam, Dave? Give me a break. Vietnam has treated us very decently in the past 15 years or so; I think we should reciprocate.

If you are going to make just a ridiculous statement at least get the history right...this explosion happened while Cuba was under Spanish control...which in turn led to this little thing called the Spanish-American War. Which was then followed by an American occupation...I agree, the embargo should be lifted. But darn....

Blame Reagan. Also, we killed 14% of the population of Vietnam, so don't drop the casualty figures on our side alone.

I love obama and I am a republican!! At first i thought he was worse then terrible, but now my view has changed. He has not raised taxes on families with incomes over 250k (yippie). He flooded the economy with cash, so my stock investments jumped in value. He bot US debt allowing me a 4% loan on a million dollar house. And now he is in talks to cut spending on social programs. He is just as good as the GOP. Next up second vacation home!

This is a very good example of how twisted and depraved our foreign policy has become. It's just like the character of our politictions .Third rate leaders cannot decide on a first rate policy of any kind. There's no big difference in republicans and democrats. All of them think the american people are morons that will swallow any lie. It's time for a NEW party in 2012

The fact remains that more than 50,000 U.S. soldiers were killed in Vietnam and we (properly) have relations with the Vietnamese. A half century later and we still continue our embargo against Cuba. Cuba is no threat today and hasn't been for a very long time. I think the problem is what Cuba tried to do to us in the 60's. Castro wanted Russia to nuke the U.S. if Cuba was further threatened. One doesn't take that lightly. Kind of like the relatives of the victims of the Manson murderers who continue to show up at parole hearings to ask that no mercy be shown. I think the Castro regime will have to be disbanded before the U.S. will be willing to come to the bargaining table.

charlie manson NEVER KILLED ANYONE! but he is in prison for life as long as folgers makes coffee. if i told someone to kill people and they did it, how can you blame me for the week minds of others? charles manson should be released from prison. at least it would provide some entertainment like that provided by rodney king?

Oh sure, we should have released him and given him a medal. The nut-job was all about violence. Remember his ideology on starting a race war? He was as guilty of murder just as if he had committed the crime. Besides, nobody in their right mind wanted this guy roaming the streets. He is where he is happiest. In prison. Said so himself.

no, i'm sorry. charley didn't do anything wrong. if you allow the government to place false charges on people and hold them in prison for life, then you give them permission to do anything. do you believe all the stories told about manson. what about our government conducting LSD experimention on unwilling subjects. maybe manson was part of those experiments in mind control? if so he will never be allowed to leave prison and talk to the public.

You’re seriously joking right? China can’t afford to have more Carriers then us, plus the fact that they have little knowledge on Carriers and carrier tactics leaves them doubtful at best. Plus they will need a fleet to protect those Carriers; it’s not possible for them to have a fleet that size in this short amount of time. Its take about 10 years to build and trials and testing of a carrier. You really need to know what you’re talking about before you spout off; it really makes you look stupid.
