The debt battle is all posturing.
Politicians want to keep their jobs.
All sides have to appear to fight as strongly as possible to stay in office, but if the government collapses they may not stay in office either.
I think that they will all settle at the last possible hour and then keep running to stay in office.

So we default on our debt, whats the worst that could happen? My neighbor defaulted on all her loans, but she still drives an Audi, wears trendy clothes, goes out to eat every other day and takes a vacation every year. Im pretty sure the U.S. still has money in its coffers cuz we still have checks in our checkbooks, right? Keep spending, whats the worst that could happen?

What's the worst that could happen? Interest rates would go up. Let's start there.
