Deep sinkhole opens under woman's bed

The first step out of bed could have been a big one.

A woman in Guatemala City reports that a sinkhole, 40 feet deep and almost 3 feet across, opened under her bed Monday.

"When we heard the loud boom we thought a gas canister from a neighboring home had exploded, or there had been a crash on the street," Inocenta Hernandez, 65, said in an Agence France-Presse report.

"We rushed out to look and saw nothing. A gentleman told me that the noise came from my house, and we searched until we found it under my bed," AFP quotes Hernandez as saying.

The area is prone to sinkholes.

In May 2010, a sinkhole about 60 feet across and 100 feet deep opened in the area, swallowing buildings and an intersection.

In 2007, another sinkhole claimed three lives in Barrio San Antonio in Guatemala City.

Hernandez told AFP that she is thankful the surprise under her bed wasn't any bigger.

"Thank God there are only material damages, because my grandchildren were running around the house, into that room and out to the patio," AFP quoted her as saying.

Wow, check out the link to the 2010 pothole! It clearly illustrates that the earth is hollow. Who'd a' thunk?

This is clearly a well. Did the person writing this story not scratch their head and question how a sink hole could be so perfectly round? Someone along time ago thought "the well is dry, lets put a floor over it so someone doesn't fall in." Then the asbestos tiles and subfloor became brittle and so the homeowner neatly carved the hole out as if they were cutting eyes on a jack o'lantern. The U.S. economy sucks, people continue to brutally kill eachother, China's got a one way ticket on the recesion express and this is our cover story?

Person1: Hey the worlds coming to an end!
Person2: Who cares when some yahoo has a giant hole underneither their bed!!

Thanks ALC for that. While a little out of left field I couldn't agree any more. The really important news of how everything is leading up to an epic collapse is never reported or looked at in depth...but boy is this sink hole top priority in the news world...

That is not a natural sinkhole, it appears to be a well, it is clearly lined with bricks.

Layers of clay & hardpan. Reminds me of what I had to dig through when starting a garden in California.

No, they lined it with metal sheets so that the dirt won't fall in as they are going down.

Seems to be a well that had been covered up in the past.

That hole is a man made hole {deep well} that have been unknowingly covered up and when the cover decayed it then sink, but will thank God for life of dwellers that saved.
